What part of Cascade? I wonder how many more of them there are?
I saw two while biking east of Forest Hills Foods on the south side of the road, south of the sidewalk. they are kind of where the trees and bushes begin.

Pretty sure it’s an old railway marker. Where is it located?
Joe
It's about 20 or 30 feet away from the edge of Cascade Road. I always wondered if it was rail way or right of way. There's not a railroad track within miles these days so I had no idea how old it might be.

Perhaps a consideration is being given to having it look good to people passing on the highway or using the off ramp?
-
Maybe it's a Project 1 installation? Is that a spot for something like that?

If you ever visit NASA in Cape Canaveral there is a nice tribute to Chaffee, Grissom and White in the Apollo / Saturn V building.

Who takes care of the restrooms at Rosa Parks Circle? While they aren't five star clean, they usually aren't terrible and there is often quite a diverse crowd in that area.

Maybe Hibma's goal is to eventually connect the lagoon at his castle to the Grand River and have a medieval marina component as well? Haha!

In the case of a downtown pharmacy like CVS, any ideas on how the breakdown of residents vs. visitors impacts the decision? IE: All the new hotels coming on line plus the potential Devos place hotel could result in a subset of people who may need to pick up various items that they either forgot or need that are part of the typical pharmacy inventory.

That ramp is full quite a bit, especially lately. It's being used for Spectrum Blodgett shuttle parking.
When I googled that development and cwd, a number of lawsuits popped up that I had forgotten about.
Is that during the rebuild of the parking ramp at Blodgett or a permanent thing? If they have some guaranteed income from a deal with Spectrum to use the ramp for shuttle parking, it would be easier to implement a pay structure and not worry about a fall off from some punters now avoiding use of the ramp.

A recession could be triggered by the fact that the average worker's pay has not grown as quickly as the economy and with the current occupant of the White House being a "tariff man" but clearly not understanding the mechanics of how tariffs actually work, should a trade war ensue and companies become forced into passing along some of the increased costs of importing both raw materials and finished goods, this will drive up prices on a wide variety of items for consumers, construction companies, manufacturers and others. The issue then becomes a decline in sales as customers pull back spending or ballooning debt due to a greater reliance on credit - or worse, a combination of the two. The trick will be managing a potential trade dispute into a modest economic slowdown rather than a full on recession. So if you are a betting person, it comes down to your confidence that the clown car currently driving around Washington D.C. has the acumen to pull off such a feat. Or, things may just work out fine and in the spirit of camaraderie and cooperation, the United States could look to lead with policies that advance the interests of all involved and economic stability is achieved for the foreseeable future.

If the economy takes a nose dive in the coming year as some are predicting, this could become a whole lot less temporary.

May have been Detroiters. I just read that they had a big neon "crack fries"sign in the window and there's a drug rehab place across the street. Doh!
Change "fries" to a verb and that sign becomes a supportive warning for that rehab facility.

If this moves forward, it will be a skyline changing development. Here’s to hoping it stays at 26 stories.
It will be time to retake the city's glamour shot from further upriver since the current standard photo opp is always the Amway, the JW and the Courtyard/Plaza Apartments.

This is one of the few subjects I actually have some tiny inside information on. I used to work for the Raideau restaurant/bars for awhile. Recently they have decided to sell off Bulls Head, Dukes and I hear Gardellas is next. The Brothers are in their late 50 early 60s now. Anyway above the Bulls head was old apartments before there was a fire in the 1940s. I have been on the upper floors and roof top and it is like a creepy blast from the past. everything was left after the fire...everything, cribs, jars of food, magazines, perfume. One of the owners had the idea that they would remodel it one day and retire on the upper floors. He said they have some sort of visual height rights or something. meaning they could build up but the neighbors can not. IDK guess the value became too much to consider the remodel.
I would love to see photos of that time capsule. I'm guessing that's not in the cards though.

Maybe the reason we complain about all of the mediocre architecture downtown is that there is no appetite for the $$ it takes to build something really nice?

It's kind of bummer to hear things like this while Dan Gilbert's project in Detroit just keeps getting bigger - https://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/local/detroit-city/2018/10/28/new-renderings-released-bedrock-old-hudsons-site/1799125002/

That's the "How many green lights will we have to sit through before I can turn left" game. Same thing happens at Knapp and Grand River in the morning and in the evening rush hour. The most I've sat through is probably 5.They're rebuilding that entire area of Knapp and doing nothing to address the light issue.
Is any organization looking at all of this? The Grand Valley Metro Council used to do a lot around these issues but I haven't heard from them in a decade.
I think the driver behavior issues too are directly related to a breakdown in our transportation system. People are getting desperate and resorting to reckless behavior. Or hogging the left lane because they know if they go in the right lane they will never EVER make it back to the left lane.
Even where there's a left turn arrow, my favorite is the driver who sits in line through several cycles of the light then, when they are first in line, still seems surprised when the light changes and gives them the green arrow - as if it is some random occurrence and the green arrow just appeared randomly.
Also, thank you for the clarification on the bus lane. I don't drive that stretch of Division often enough so when I do I've been perplexed by the situation.

Now I'll admit that I might not be completely rational on this one. But Let me tell you, everyone like me or anyone more conservative than me gets really jaded driving down division street. I don't think dividing the lanes up between cars and buses was a smart move. But going forward, I would love to see the entire distance of division street given a facelift. If division street becomes vibrant, that would be big for Grand Rapids.
If I might chime in, that lane says "buses only" and yet I see cars driving in it all the time. It doesn't seem like people have much respect for the concept.

Honestly i'm surpised at how favorable the thread actually was lol. In terms of SkyscraperPage17, i'm not sure if he's the same guy. The guy @GRDadof3 is referring to is relentlessly contrarian to pretty much everything. It didn't contain any of the Grand Rapids performing "below it's potential" rhetoric, followed by a long lecture on race relations i'm used to. Not to mention he tends to be a little more high on the future of Detroit and it's potential. Though I didn't look into his history.
I thought your post on SSP was well said.

While that lawsuit may have be difficult to win, the Meritage general counsel's comment, “We didn’t try to copy them in any way, shape or form” seems a little facetious to me. It doesn't take an expert in trade dress to see the similarities between the two.
