Wow...That video brought back some memories. My dad was the estimator that won this project for mechanical contracting and we got to go to the grand opening event for all of the companies involved in the building of it. They played this video and I was amazed I remember all of it considering I was in 4th or 5th grade at the time.

I remember going to the opening event. It was a figure skating event with Kirstie Yamaguchi I think. Though my Dad and I hoped they would have played a hockey game.

Crazy at looking at all the large parking lots and boarded up building around the arena at that time. Ionia and Commerce were ghost towns. Makes you wonder what the next 23 years have in store.

  2. Just had a corporate suit fly in that had not passed through our airport in roughly 5 years. In meeting him at the baggage claim, the 2nd statement after hello was "Man, Grand Rapids sure seems to be growing!" Amazing how an airport gives a representation of a city/metro area. I then joked about all of the cities I have" been to" because of connecting flights and based an opinion off of the airport. Glad that the airport is creating a great first impression.

Rumor is true, still not announced, probably won't be till later this week, but American has loaded the new route into their computer.  First flight from Miami is December 19 with the first flight to Miami next morning at 6:05 AM from GRR.   I don't think they've got all the real fares posted yet but just some fake place holders at least for December (over $2000 round trip for non-refundable coach ticket.)  But here are the times along with a more reasonable fare for random dates I entered for January:

EDIT: OK, remember you read it here first - here's the announcement for people who don't read urbanplanet:

Interesting discussion. We flew out of ORD to DEN recently (because it's still too *&^%^#@% expensive for the 5 of us to fly out of GRR most times) and  we flew in a pretty big plane, American Airlines, 49  rows (I know because were in the back row) and 6 seats across. I swear I never thought that plane would leave the runway at ORD. Anyone know what the longest runway at ORD is? We used the whole damn thing.

ORD's longest runway is 10L/28R at 13,000 feet. 3,000 feet longer than GRR's longest.

Did anyone else notice on the map that all the runway names are going to change and not just the replacement new north runway?  So I did a little research to see what's going on.  There is a lot of science behind the runway naming convention.  Briefly stated runways are numbered based on the magnetic azimuth (compass reading) of their location.  The reason for the name changes is because the EARTH'S MAGNETIC FIELD HAS CHANGED!!!  If anyone cares, here is a high-level YouTube video explanation of the naming system:

    Very interesting.

Has anyone seen the renderings of phase 2 of the terminal renovation, the new ticketing counter /baggage claims?

That rendering at least looks a little less drab than the ones we've seen previously.

You may want to research the Salvation Army and its stance on gays. Of course, if you don't care about gay people, then it might not matter to you.

Well, I care about gay rights.... After doing some googling, The Kroc Center will not be getting my $$$.

The local catholic schools used to practice some track and field events there; high jump and  pole vaulting.

Still the large baseball field too. It says home of the Saints. Does anyone know if Aquinas College played here recently?Super large lot. Could accommodate lots of housing.

  8. While 14 stories is very disappointing, if we were able to get something similar to the IVY Boutique Hotel I would be happy. I stayed in the Chicago Hotel in early January for a work conference and was very impressed, even though the rooftop bar was closed due to it being 14 degrees outside. There are many of these small locations over the country. Comparable to the City Flats brand.

Perhaps something like this would work in this location.

  9. The plan states a new runway on the North side of the airport. Didn't they just redo the general aviation runway(8L/26R) just a year or two ago?? I wonder if they are thinking of lengthening this runway to accommodate larger planes. Though I would think the airport is sufficient with the two other runways, as much larger airports like RSW(Fort Myers) and SAN(San Diego) are just single runway airports with  much higher passenger volumes. Perhaps funding would be better served in other areas.

Either way I have to applaud the new CEO and the Board on all of the great changes over the past decade.
