One of the reasons they say they won’t do it is because of cost, but that’s complete hogwash considering the money they are dropping on building new facilities in Richmond

Funds for buildings and 80 plus scholarships come from completely different funds and really do not have anything to do with the other. I have brought this up before, but 60% of VCU's athletic revenue comes from students fees. It is just not economically feasible for VCU to have a football team. This all before you get into Tital IX issues. Do you cut other men's teams to become compliant or do you spend even more money to create new women teams.

I think VCU has found its niche in the college sports landscape with their basketball program, and I am not sure it is worth the risk (really money) to have a football team.

I have read that VCU has no plans at this time to invest in a football program and that they are focused on the current athletic programs. That said, my father was a college football coach for many years and when he was at South Florida, he said representatives from VCU visited to see how that program got started and looked at the expenditures etc and it's ability to fund other sports etc. I guess ultimately, they didn't like what they saw. That would have been around 2009 ish.

Money will always be an issue when it comes to VCU creating a football team. 80 scholarships for a football team plus scholarships that need to become available for title 9 issues. Either they would have to cut some men's sports to become compliant or spend even more money to create new women's sports teams. 60% of the currently athletic fund is already subsidized from student fees.

That’s what it sounds like to me too.  I have noticed an upgrade of aircraft flying to and from Newark lately - instead of the smaller regional jets (ERJ-145s), they are now flying the Embraer 175, which is a larger plane, but not a mainline aircraft (an upgrade nevertheless).  What I have not noticed is any increased frequency of the route (which can be more difficult to detect just looking at the flight schedules).  Not sure how many flights there were per day versus flights per day now...I’ve only noticed the aircraft upgrade.  Maybe an announcement will come out soon.  I’ll keep my eyes peeled!

Once school is over for the semester I may make a Christmas project out of DOT flight information to see if there are any trends with more flights and where they are going to.

  4. “We’re also expanding service to key business destinations including Detroit; St. Louis; Kansas City, Missouri; Omaha, Nebraska; and Richmond, Virginia,” Jill Kaplan, United’s president of New York/New Jersey, said about the company’s plan to add more flights on several existing Newark routes. https://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/flights/todayinthesky/2018/10/15/united-airlines-new-routes-nyc-washington-dc-california-hubs/1647581002/

This reads to me as they are offering more flights to NY.

  5. Southwest is my favorite airline to fly, so I have a strong opinion about them not offering more routes out of Richmond. Unfortunately, one of their biggest hubs is Baltimore and I am not sure if it is worth the fuel to fly such a short route.  I have recently moved to Chicago and there is an entire airport pretty much dedicated to Southwest,. I would think this would be a logical next step for Southwest to fly to and from Richmond. This would give them more out west flights than what the Atlanta hub can provide. I of course want a direct flight back home that is not United or American airlines.

  6. Honest question. I know that Monroe park is a good sized area, but with the trees in the middle of it there is not a lot of space to play football, soccer, or ultimate frisbee. Will there be a point where VCU is worried about not having enough green space, or with a lot of kids not living near campus is this not a big deal? I went to Virginia Tech where intramural sports was a huge deal and I find it hard to believe that these opportunities would exist at VCU with only one turf field.

Pic I took flying out to Atlanta from RVA 4/27. This is over Scott's Addition and Monument Ave area. Just thought it was cool since we don't see a lot of aerials from there.

I think I have seen it mentioned somewhere on this board but you can really tell that Scott's Addition has almost no greenery compared to the rest of the city

Agreed!!  I would love for that to happen!

on a side note, I'm still frustrated by the continual competition between Norfolk and Richmond airports.  I'm thinking one has to come out on top as the next premier airport.  Even if that happens, they will both exist it's just that one should clearly be the front runner (my opinion).  Hard to do that when one airport continually "one-ups" the other every time new service starts (they always seem to be neck and neck).  Something has to give at some point.  While RIC is technically still busier than Norfolk, it isn't outpacing Norfolk by much.  Just a dynamic scenario.

Anyway, it will be interesting to see how the airlines respond to Frontier's move into Virginia.  Will Southwest make a bold move, will Spirit, will Allegiant?  Things are building up!

Out of the blue, Alaska Airlines comes in and surprises everybody!

I know, I've noticed that!  I didn't think it would ever get that tall, but maybe I don't know what 417 feet really looks like.  I'm glad to see that it is taller than I thought I would be!  Can anyone nearby snap a photo of the height in relation to the buildings next to it and post it? :)

Here is a tweet I saw yesterday from the current Dominion building

I don't meant to get off topic but has anyone heard anything more about the replacement for one james river plaza? Is 700 Canal Place still happening and also is it still going to be just 16 stories or will it grow at all to be even taller? I don't know how I feel about tearing down a taller building to replace it with an even shorter building.

The current plan is to tear it down. Fun fact, it is cheaper to tear down the building and rebuild than it would be to go through it and retrofit to today's code.

Welcome to the boards, cwd221!  Thanks for the input and news.  By the way, what is the "skyscraper threshold?"   At what point does a tower become a "skyscraper" (350', 500', what?) and if that threshold is pretty tall...does Richmond even have a true skyscraper?

Of course regulations can change from place to place, but he mentioned something around the 500 foot figure. This may be a reason why you don't see any buildings greater than that in Richmond.  The friend who mentioned this to me works at Hourigan and usually tells me things before it comes out to the public. When I was talking about the rumor of the Dominion building I mentioned that it would be cool if they built a 40 story building and that is where the skyscraper regulations came up.

  12. First time post even though I have been a long time follower!

The plan is to currently implode the second building. Will be interesting to see how it is done considering there will be two new shiny glass building on either side of it. Also of  note that my friend told me about this project and this was his speculation. At a certain point the height of a building needs to be considered due to more regulations. The price can significantly rise when crossing over the skyscraper threshold.
