Haven't heard or read anything about Switch and their proposed expansion since last year as mentioned in the last couple of posts above from back then.  But the last month or so they've been going gangbusters putting up the shell of a massive ugly concrete panel building just west of the pyramid.  The size is impressive but it's not going to be nearly as pretty as the pyramid.

So I climbed up on a couple of berms on the north side of 60th Street both with dangerously overgrown vegetation and took a few photos.  Not the best photos, the sun was shining right in the view finder so I couldn't see what I was shooting.

I just drove by there recently and saw this. The curved roofs are interesting. I'm wondering if anything is going to be added to the exterior, or if it will just be pre-fab concrete like the castle?

Here's the news on the former Elk Brewing space.

    https://www.crainsgrandrapids.com/news/restaurants-1/lounge-style-art-gallery-eyes-former-elk-brewing-location-on-wealthy-street/

"The concept for 700 Wealthy Street SE calls for converting the 1,600-square-foot space into The Grey Rabbit, which is billed as a lounge-style art gallery. Partners aim to open the new concept in September 2023. "

Hmm, that could be interesting. Back in the day the Elk bartenders would always joke that they were a Donkey waiting room, so if people can come and enjoy a drink and look at art I can see it being successful

Why'd they fire all of the normal staff? Was it right around the time they closed the Comstock Park location? Did they move people around?

This was back in about 2018 or 2019. I don't know the whole story but I believe it was after the co-founders sold to a new owner who wasn't a fan of the management at the Wealthy St location and cleared house. I knew a couple of the bartenders from that time and they all were let go instead of moved to the Comstock Park location and they had a pretty bad reaction to how it went down

To me, the renovation is a little underwhelming right now. I’m hoping as the landscaping matures it really starts to take shape.

I think one of the most disappointing aspects of the redesign is that they didn’t redo all of the ugly vinyl security signs around the entrance. I thought they’d take the opportunity to give this a more refined, permanent look.

I agree. I'm also not really sure why they chose the already weathered/rusted metal look either

We used to go often for Wednesday night trivia! If you went for that, we became great friends with the old host, who his firing from that company was BEYOND shady. It's a cool little place, but I was sad to see the employees let go. Even if they did go rogue, it seemed for the better.

Then we definitely have seen each other there, since I used to be there on Wednesday's for trivia all the time! I still like to go there from time to time especially to enjoy the patio in the summer, but the vibe of the place has definitely changed.

I used to frequent Elk often. They fired all their staff out of the blue. No one knows why. The staff turned out to be the reason we went, as we had developed solid relationships with them. Great staff. Once they were all let go, we haven't been back.

Hah, I bet we've been there at the same time many times since I used to frequent it often as well. I actually was closer to the bartenders who got let go and it seemed like it was the owners trying to take more control over the wealthy st location since the management there had been doing their own thing for a while. It was pretty shady and caused a couple other bartenders to quit. Steve, the brewer at that location is still there though and is a great guy.
