it is interesting to me how some companies are going all in on remote/hybrid work, such as the insurance industry, while other industries are trying to go in office/hybrid. I wonder why the difference?
Remote work always had it's risks. You can set someone up in India with a laptop and their company charges the american company a significantly less rate than a American. The indian's I worked with were working from home too, which probably saved the american company more money on top of that. Some American workers are even taking a pay rate cut, but still charge more more than India.

We've seen time and time again that the pet project by one CEO to move a company to Charlotte (Chiquita, Sealed Air, Centene, et.) rarely is met with as much excitement by the next CEO who comes in and is like "WTF did we do this?!?!? What a waste of time and money! This isn't the solution to our problems."
The writing was on the wall that Centene was committed to remote work since COVID... But our arrogance had us thinking we were the exception to moves they and their industry have been making to shed real estate. We thought we were likely to become the HQ rather than actually thinking about the behavior of this firm, their new CEO, and industry away from in person work. They won't meet hiring projections cause they can recruit a developer from anywhere in the country now.... Not just NC. And that's exactly what many developers want. The whole insurance industry is going largely remote.
A lot of companies are offshoring to India now. I worked for a Indian company and you wouldn't believe the business pipelines they have. Hopefully onshoring comes back and produces jobs for the area.

6pm on N. Tryon
He said the woman walking down the street and carrying a long weapon opened fire.
“At which point, she raises the gun,” said the chef who did not want his face shown on TV. “I duck down in my passenger seat. A group of shots rings out. I hear glass breaking immediately, which is my car being shot.”
A barrage of rounds struck the chef’s car several times on the driver’s side.
“There’s a pause,” he said. “Another volley of shots, at which point I hear my rear windshield being shot.”
The chef said a bystander then tackled the shooter.
“People start screaming once they see gun,” the chef said. “He grabs her to try and wrestle the gun away from her to try to wrestle her around.”
The bystander was shot, the chef said.
“I was thinking the man who tackled her was probably in very bad shape, and I felt terrible for him,” he said.
The chef, who was not injured, said that person likely saved his life.
CMPD said the two shooting victims’ injuries were not life-threatening.
I'm all for Psychiatric hospital's coming back with strict government oversight compared to no oversight before. If someone's a danger to themselves or others, they shouldn't be in jail, but a place that can rehabilitate and evaluate them.

Isn’t Charlotte the least dense urban area in the world or something? Some of the data is old but the trend is the same and accelerated during Covid as people moved to the ‘burbs.

“Charlotte is not only less dense than Atlanta, the world's least dense urban area with more than 4,000,000 residents, but it is only one-quarter the density of the supposed “sprawl capital” of Los Angeles”
Landlord's need to lower rent in the Cities. Cities are in a affordability crisis now with incomes not keeping up. I don't know how that would be resolved. Hat's off to the person who solves it!

I really dislike this train of thought, trying to improve a place isn't bad thing. NC has changed a LOT in the past 10 years for the better. This type of thinking is why other southern states continue to lag behind the rest of the nation in almost every QoL metric.
NC's come a long way since the Bathroom Bill fiasco IMO.

So… as an tourist in downtown Asheville once or twice a year for the past 25 years it seems like… the unhoused population has been recently… removed? Relocated? Displaced? Housed? this summer?
so what is up? As a bougie tourist it’s pretty nice, but clearly this comes at a huge (and invisible) social cost. Anyone know what APD (and the city) has been up to?
They got moved to hotels away from the CBD. I saw a bunch of folks by one and they went in and out it. Hopefully they house them in the winter too and this isn't just a temporary summer tourist thing.

They just said there's alot to do in the city compared to others. I think they were referring to entertainment and nightlife. They couldn't stop talking about how beautiful southpark is.

Whenever my colleagues have to go to Charlotte for business they are always excited. The enthusiasm Charlotte brings is phenomenal.

I know the Biden administration had pledged to work on CDC Director Dr. Walensky's messaging (I think she hired a media consultant) but hot damn this is what she said to WaPo yesterday about the two children who were diagnosed with monkeypox:
I literally cannot believe that such a high-ranking official would make such a statement.
All she had to say was that "both of these children were infected by household transmission". Nothing more. It's irrelevant to the story what someone's sexuality is in regard to the virus' transmission. Sexuality doesn't make any difference how monkeypox spreads, close physical contact does.
I get that we all make mistakes and sometimes we speak without thinking, and while I don't think she meant to disparage the gay community, focusing on the "gay" aspect will just translate to people who aren't gay (but have been exposed to the virus) ignoring the symptoms (because they'll think "I'm not gay, so I can't get it) and furthering its spread, all while helping to fuel greater hate and discrimination onto the LGBT+ community.
Right-wingers will literally take this statement and say that gay men are "grooming" children and purposely giving them the virus, and will just be another reason for them not to want gay marriage and especially LGBT adoption.
They want to make sodomy illegal next which would make all Gay people in NC automatically a class 1 Felon with Jail time and have to register as Sex Offenders.

Personally I think this is all posturing for future stadium negotiations. I think Tepper is trying to build up a reputation of "if you don't give me what I want, I'll take my business elsewhere".
This corporate welfare given to Billionaires at the expense of taxpayers is disgusting. Reminds of this Silicon Valley episode:

David Tepper's GT Real Estate Holdings LLC files complaint against York County in Delaware bankruptcy court
QuoteGT Real Estate's complaint filed this week states the county funds were provided "with no binding contractual obligations governing its use." The county claims the money was for a road expansion project at the headquarters project site that was not completed.

Just now, J-Rob said:Whether or not the road improvements were made is likely a matter of timing. The improvements would have been made had the project been completed, and since they are seeking lost tax revenue or other damages, it seems to me the suit isn't just about the road.
Should Tepper pay lost tax revenue to York County because Rock Hill didn't uphold their obligations? Going back to my original question that upset you, it was a fair question.
Should Tepper have separated the money for the road? I have no idea if there was legal responsibility to do that, but for what it is worth, even York County blames Rock Hill, and Rock Hill is also a defendant in the case. I included journalistic links earlier because that is more authoritative than my opinion, but I will highlight this statement for you this time since the links offended some people.
"It has accused the city of Rock Hill of breach of contract, claiming the city's failure to issue infrastructure bonds for the Panthers project led to its demise."
I don't feel bad for Tepper. He has plenty of money. At the same time, if he agreed to complete the project under the condition that hundreds of millions of dollars be offset, then he should have received that money. The people I feel worst for in this whole situation are the contractors and construction workers. I hope they are somehow paid in full.
There seems to be some unnecessary anger this afternoon, so hopefully everyone has a relaxing weekend.
No anger here, just disappointed for the SC taxpayers that the funds were possibly not used for their intended purpose which is fraud. A judge will have the determine if that's true or not. That money could have gone to the homeless and veterans or other infrastructure improvements.

Lawsuit's beginning. Hope the taxpayers win against Tepper.
Quote"The Tepper defendants spent the Penny Tax Funds for purposes other than the completion of the Mt. Gallant Project," the lawsuit reads. "Upon information and belief, none of the Penny Tax Funds went to its intended purpose. To date, no progress has been made toward the completion of the Mt. Gallant expanded scope."
The lawsuit seeks the full $21 million from Tepper's companies, plus any increased construction costs related to the Mt. Gallant expansion. The suit also seeks lost tax revenue that would've been generated by the training facility.

So people can say "Even if the city and/or county were at fault?" without giving a explanation of citation? What a joke.

Really don't understand why Bamboo isn't encouraged in the states here. It's weird going to Asia and seeing it as a lifesource for building, clothing, and eating in those communities but people have a phobia of it here. Sustainability is critical right now. There are non-invasive Bamboos' that can grow here and produce 35% more oxygen than trees.

I'm pretty sure all the NC'ers that flood coastal SC every summer and the countless NC-based companies dependent on the port of Charleston would beg to differ.
Seriously though, you think such an attitude is good for the region? I've always considered the congenial relationship between Charlotte and all of its suburbs to be a major advantage and point of distinction compared to metropolitan Atlanta. I enjoyed my time living there, but the not-so-infrequent clashes between the central city and its suburbs (especially in Cobb County) was something most folks could do without.
And don't think that Tepper won't play hardball with Charlotte either. What he's done in Rock Hill is probably a shot across the bow to let Charlotte/NC know that if he doesn't get what he wants, he'll leave them holding the bag as well.
Isn't that extortion?
