I will add, the one thing I feel ORF needs is more fast dining within the actual terminals. Dunno if Burger King is still there, but that’s in the main area. Might be moot because I don’t believe this airport has layovers, but they should consider putting a BK, or something like a Pizza Hut/Taco Bell on each terminal like in other major airports.
If they can just move the restaurants that are outside of security inside of it I think they'd be mostly fine, which I would not be surprised if that happens since I doubt the leases to those places neatly coincide with their timeline for consolidating security.

True it is in Norfolk's history, but it is not the entirety of Norfolk's history, just the part that most people choose to comment on.
You're on an urban development forum wanting folks to talk about something other than the biggest policy to affect Norfolk Urban life in probably a century. What do you expect lol

Do we know if the grocery store is still a part of the development? Everything else is built and a lot of the staging/construction equipment is gone, but the area where the grocer is supposed to be is just empty.

Like the buildings+promenade, hate that both parking garages are staying. Those eat up so much good real estate and stick out like a sore thumb. This city continues to be incredibly unambitious

I like going to philly too. Friday/Monday ain't the best split for me, but I could always fly there on friday and take amtrak back on sunday.

I mean just cause the Headwaters casino is failing, doesn't mean that Cordish is the 'good guy' here. Waterside, while it looks nice, has absolutely nothing going on/draws and I don't think that Cordish would have really put their all into making a casino next door work. I dunno, feels like we're really idolizing a company here that isn't all that spectacular?

Heck, even just an hourly interurban to Richmond would help a ton

Norfolk had the fourth busiest Amtrak station in the "Southeast" last year.
That's pretty insane considering the only route that goes through here is the 3x daily NEC train.

It means that ORF will operate A220’s as well as the ERJ (until they retire them.) We are going to be more like the other bases now like TPA and CHS. Expect new routes in the coming months too. I’m definitely betting on the Provo route.
Is that meaningfully different than what has been the case so far? I know a lot of the fleet from here has been the Embraer but I took one of the A220's from Norfolk to Los Angeles last summer
EDIT: Of course the idea of even more new routes is AWESOME

Does that mean that ORF will be hosting a number of A220s, and if so what does that entail? Would ORF be the normal start/end points of a travel day, or is it more just where aircraft storage and maintenance would be consolidated?

My guess is we have a few Airlines wanting to start international service but we just don’t exactly meet the expectations for it yet. Probably fast tracked because we know that the business is there.
Breeze could even have a stake in it, we’re definitely in range for some international destinations with the A220. Even the E-Jets can get to Canada easily.
Would love if that were the case, but realistically how soon could something like that open? I don't think I've seen a project as big as that get completed in less than like a year and a half (except for the new ODU stadium, and they paid a premium to ensure it got complete in an offseason)

Federal Funding For Customs Facility
ORF Received 6M in federal funding for the facility. Construction is expected to begin late summer.
Great news! And that's an incredibly fast rate to get construction going for the project. A lot of positive momentum for the airport nowadays

Some more renderings of the airport. Looks like they've slid the ticketing away from the hotel and towards the new car rental parking garage. Maybe for ease of construction, or maybe to allow for future expansion of the ticketing area? They also show the space they're reserving for a future Concourse C.

Its not just the airport. Its the cities. We have more beef with Richmond than (dare I say) Virginia Beach. I think rivalry is natural and healthy in a way to keep us motivated and happy for our own cities. However some of these things are kinda of ridiculous. I love Richmond, RIC is cool, and the area in general is fun but going back to when they called us a "annoying fly that wont go away" (You can find that in one of my many replies to them in the RIC forum) its just not good.
Something went wrong somewhere and for some reason we have built this wall of rivals with our neighboring cities and cities 100 miles away...are we the problem? Speaking of that, I remember someone faintly telling me that we kinda of had a "big head" in Norfolk and we never realize it. Im not blaming anyone btw, im just more interested on why the heck we have these rival relations with people we should be working with.Sounds like someone from Virginia Beach

Flights to Canada would be really fun, would love a direct to Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, hell even Halifax. Hopefully Jet Blue flights to there would also open up flights to other locales with them.
Feels like the fact they're putting money into building a new International Processing Building is a good sign for the likelihood of at least some international flights heading in soon
This airport is going to be unrecognizable in 5 years

Did their numbers beat us last year? Also, with the way their year is turning out I wouldn't be so surprised if they did in fact beat/overcome our passenger numbers for the 2023 years.
Congrats to all parties though. We beat our record last year, and I think thats all thats should matter at this time. Like I keep saying, RIC is over 100 miles away and it really shouldn't be seen as our main competitor. They did not beat us last year.
Passengers Served 2022:
RIC: 4,068,689
ORF: 4,115,537

I’d love to see one new Airline and Non-Stops to Seattle and Portland this year. Provo (Salt Lake City) on Breeze would be another wish list.
Norfolk already has direct flights to Portland! And I hear Maine is perfect in the summertime.

Love seeing this year over year growth. It's crazy but 5M could be hit within a few years, which would be wild since we just crossed the 4M threshold in 2022.

I just noticed a little addition to Breeze's Norfolk flights this morning that hasn't been announced yet, or at least that I've seen. How do y'all feel about Southern California?

Saw this rendering on the ORF Facebook page. Looks like the foreground off to the right is a new parking garage. I thought there was a third terminal but it looks like they expanded the original two for this rendering.

Saw that too. Don't think it'd preclude a third terminal since it would probably go in the green/grey space just above it. I just don't know why we need another parking garage, we already have like, 2 thousand spaces that weren't used during christmas lol. Maybe rental cars? (But so far away from the baggage claim?)

I mean I would be surprised if every modern major military doesn't have at least a few maps and speculative strategies in regards to this area. Having the worlds largest Navy base will garner that kind of attention.

Would love to have one of the Europe ones, but could see this area being an easy gateway into the Caribbean as well

So what is the truth then
That crime happens in this city yes, but to say that it happens at every big crowd and is what stopped first friday's from happening is just plain wrong. Folks so often catastrophize Norfolk crime, and it's part of the reason why we don't have a nightlife downtown anymore. Pushing 'crime in downtown Norfolk is so rampant we can't even have a fun social gathering' is not helpful

Norfolk International Airport
in Norfolk

I am not an expert but would not be surprised if that's mostly because the rental car facility and new check-in/facade are more complicated projects and need time for design/review. The TSA consolidation might be tied to the check-in area so passengers only have to deal with such customer facing construction for a certain amount of time. I don't think we're at the worrying stage (yet)
