That’s the question I had, but like a Blopp was saying…maybe they were looking for dedicated BRT and biking lanes?

    That could be the case.
Would having a dedicated BRT lane reduce the bridge to one lane of vehicle traffic each direction or was the hope to have 3 lanes each direction?

@HikeI was thinking the same thing.  Good feedback. Just want to hear from a few others before I make any official decision.  Thanks!

The 10k run is more problem than I imagined, it says 40,000 participants plus the viewers, just too much and the rain after lunch is a problem for me. We need just a boring, nothing going on, average day to do this, I also think the pulse will be packed.

    Richmond UP Meet-up Participants:

The weather is showing a chance for strong thunderstorms starting at about noon tomorrow.  Our meet-up time is 10:00am. We might get a little sightseeing time in before the bottom drops out, but wanted to get your thoughts:

Should we postpone this meet-up to a different Saturday (new date TBD) or should we just press and take a chance?

I’d like to postpone, not just for the rain, also, the 10k. I forgot how popular this thing is and draws thousands, plus it hasn’t happened since before Covid and even more are ready to get out to do it, watch it, which will be stress on the areas we’re trying to go. There are reroutes of bus lines, the pulse as well, add to that rain, potential for heavy, I was already likely not going, just seemed like too much to deal with that could take away from the intent.

    Depth….

It’s all about perspective, the excavators are on a higher piece of land, ok then, we’re back in business. What would really help us here is a webcam, are they going to build this whole thing and no webcams?

About when can we expect a crane to go up?

It should be once we see pilings and depth to the foundation, the big hole I was asking about and want to see. At this point, I can’t tell, still looks to be awhile, maybe others have some other insight.

Oh, I knew you were older than Hike and I, but other than you, I think Hike and I are the oldest.  Sorry, I miscommunicated what I knew to be true.   Thanks for trailblazing life for us my "seasoned" friend.  LOL!

This song and the dodge are my year. As for kepone in the James, that’s all I heard about Hopewell.  I moved here in the 80’s, so, before my time, but the fear of the area has stuck with me. I’ve actually barely been there, I know I have, but can’t remember it, sorry Hopewell.

A great photo courtesy of u/ThatChildNextDoor on Reddit (r/rva)...who, I think, also might be a member of this site under a different username (just a hunch)...or, at least, lurks here quite often:

I saw this one earlier, it’s a good photo of thetransfer lot, which still has the port-a-potty.

While this would be better than no squirrels in the Richmond metro I really hope they work it out in the location it's planned for.  It's purely emotional reasoning but I hope they stay in the city proper, maybe they can work out a deal with the MLB if they are a few months late?

If there is truly a problem, delaying was my thought too, just keep paying penalties and buy some time. With its attachment to VCU, I’m not too worried about it going to Henrico, doubt VCU would accept that deal.

  9. Remind me of the location for the new park?  Reason I ask, is there demolition of structures involved? My idea would be to do these which can mitigate any concerns, go do some of the following;  like, shove some dirt around, knock over a building, set up a trailer, add a port-a-potty, put up barrels, cones, flagging, fencing,  a blinking truck, a sign that says future home or coming soon, minds would be at ease and could give the design team time to work. My hope is that the design teams are working diligently in the background. There are a lot of players now that are all trying to play in the sandbox at the same time. I’m assuming everyone is contracted and getting paid that is involved in this phase, and if they are, they have their hands full. Just getting programs and scopes from these is time consuming, there’s the MLB group, the city, VCU, the architects, engineers, the GC, just off the top of my head, all trying to press to get it done…..I hope.  I do feel it can be done, I hope they are working on it right now and all not just sitting around waiting for the city, please tell me they’ve already started!

I wouldn’t be too worried about this getting done, it is one of the most important  passenger rail infrastructure projects in the country as all new rail service to Washington DC from the south must use this bridge. Because of this, Virginia also has political support from NC, as well as other northeastern states that want increased rail service to the south.

I do agree that we need to figure out a way as a country to reduce our costs to build new infrastructure as us infrastructure projects have a tendency balloon in costs, however, this project doesn’t seem to be one that would be on the chopping block as it has bipartisan support.

I like your optimism. I’m good at giving up, but that comes from years of lowering my expectations. Reading comments from the article, there are a lot of positive outlooks, one mentioned a way to trim cost would be to delete the bike/pedestrian bridge that runs beside the train, basically a separate bridge. That would be too bad if it gets left out of the project.

    Rut Rohhhhh...

Folks, THIS is NOT good, even though this is a NOVA issue, because of the downstream effect it could have on potentially delaying the expansion of passenger rail service to/from/through Main Street Station.

    From today's Greater Greater Washington:

Long Bridge reconstruction to double train capacity could be delayed by inflation

Virginia officials announced that the construction of a new span of Long Bridge over the Potomac could be delayed if the once fully-funded project can’t find the funds to account for cost inflation. The project, set to open in 2030, will add a passenger railroad-only bridge span, add an extra track to the existing three near L’Enfant Plaza, and attach a pedestrian and bike path along the existing bridge connecting East Potomac Park in DC and Long Bridge Park in Virginia.  (Luz Lazo / Post)

And I thought it would be different this time….It seems there’s never a good time to reduce our dependency on cars, just kick the can down the tracks. I worry the next phase will be a change in government and then off to the bottom of the pile and it starts all over again.

This is a really good question. Hard to say just yet. True, while some folks from NOVA/DC moved to metro Richmond bc they can work remotely, RVA was gaining population throughout the 2010s at a pretty robust clip as it was. I think there's enough momentum - plus Richmond is starting to pop up on the national scene more and more - so hopefully any negative impact will be negligible.

Another question would be: if indeed remote work starts to change with businesses increasingly requiring workers to come into the office "x" number of days per week, how will that impact office requirements for companies that might be locating/moving to Richmond - particularly downtown office space? Not saying the office construction market is poised for any kind of takeoff, but I do wonder how a shift in "at the office" requirements might change the dynamic of office construction.

While I did find working from home during the pandemic was nice, I have to say, I missed the office some too.  There was something about the routine, getting out, seeing others, I missed that some. Recently I had an appointment with a small company  in Innsbrook and had to meet at their office. Their office was about 5-6 people,  between their office and maybe 1 other small office, the entire building was empty, 2 floors, atrium, it was a ghost town, was strange, like life had ended. I hope office makes a comeback, at least partially.  Maybe the 3 days at the office like CapOne is doing will work out. About the time you’re sick of the office you’ll have 4 days at home, 2 of them being the weekend and Monday and Friday working from home.

I just looked back at one my many population estimate spreadsheets, this one being from 2018, and it has Richmond surpassing Norfolk in 2024 (246k vs 245k).  This was assuming Norfolk was seeing a minor population increase.  Despite both cities seemingly being under-counted in 2020, it looks like this prediction was at least still very close.

Noticed yesterday that Capital One is going back to the office for 3 days per week. I assume other companies have or are going to eventually do this. I wonder if any of the “back to the office” changes will affect how people choose where to live and does that help or hurt growth here or perhaps no effect? My assumption is some people have moved here to work remotely to NOVA, DC, etc. but this is just my perception, wonder what others see.

NC's two largest cities are both building new bus transfer stations.  Raleigh's is further along.  It will be a new hub for their Bus Rapid Transit and include a 32 story apartment tower on top of it and it is under construction now.  Charlotte has a bus transfer center now but it will be replaced and put underground with a huge mixed use tower on top.  It is in the early stages of planning now.

Here is Raleigh's and they dropped the hotel and adding more apartments to the site.

    http://rusbusnc.com/

Good looking project. Right now “Richmond’s got a lot”, a transfer lot, which is better than it is in its current condition. Fingers crossed our region will have a nice example soon, with the growth the region is seeing, right around the corner would be nice.

Shhhh, don’t tell I Miss RVA that there’s a porta-potty in the first video.  Usually they’re on site at the beginning of the project but there it is at the end of this project.  That’s what makes us unique, RVA just does things differently.

    Hey all,

Me and my fam. Just visited Richmond last weekend for GalaxyCon.  Great time, good AirBB in Monroe Ward, walkable to the con.   Great restaurants we found in Wong Gonzales (killer tacos), Secret Sandwich Society, an ok slice in Valentino’s pizza.  Went to the Poe museum and St. John’s Church (Site Patrick Henry…you know). Great breakfast burritos at Liberty Pub out there.

I do have one honest question that left me puzzled when I was there.  Why is there so much dog crap on the sidewalks and the landscaping medians around the sidewalks.  Up and around Grace st, Monroe, etc.  I noticed not only the dog crap, some more fresh, some crusty and very old; but people walking there dogs, letting them crap on the side wall or up in the landscaping without picking it up.  Is that a thing?

That’s too bad, wish it wasn’t as bad as you mentioned but doesn’t surprise me. I haven’t lived downtown in years and even when I did, there is a bit of a messy side to our city. I live in the burbs and many pick up the poo, but, there is a consistent dookie on the street even out here. No sidewalks where we walk, we’re in the neighborhoods and too often there’s “junk” on the street, like very regular. It’s ridiculous and I have hit it every now and then, which is gross. I think it’s just lazy, don’t care, lack of social behavior, bad parenting, etc. I did confront a young 20 something woman, who let her dog go in our yard, and she said she had no bag. I ran to get one and by the time I got back to the door she was across the street and gone.
What is a thing per RVA Reddit is leaving chicken bones.  There are always posts about that, like the one below and the location of them with a photo.  Maybe we should do that, track the poo on Google, call it wayz-do-do?

True - those columns, as you said, really ARE quite spindly. I'm surprised the architect didn't go with something considerably more robust.

It’s stretching the limits of design by thinking outside the box.
