Couldn't agree more.  there was no reason to allow them to not include windows.  Even Macy's has windows on the Hillsboro Road side.  The store is simply big with no personality and feels like you are inside a big box, which you are.

You would think with all the NIMBYs over in Green Hills they would have lobbied for something more aesthetically pleasing. The most frustrating part is that for not a huge investment they could have done something really cool to the exterior shell (and I guess they still could some day). I mean it is pretty much a blank canvas. And those stupid stripes of brick at the bottom - it looks like a sample/demo mock up. I know design nowadays is dictated by budget but I want to shake the architects who come up with this garbage.  Thanks for indulging my rant.

Wasn't there supposed to be a screen to cover the hvac units?

I think so. Surely if they went to the expense of installing a railing on the upper mechanical(?) roof (the height of which is only a story or so) they will install one to protect folks from falling off a 30-story tower. Not to mention the purely aesthetic function of obscuring those god awful HVAC units.

That part isn't that bad to look at. It's the little black units that line the edge of the roof that are distracting. I hope those are covered up soon.

I think we're talking about the same thing. Those little black units will soon be covered by a railing system. The same railing system that is already installed and can be seen in the above photo on the upper portion/tier of the roof.

Did you happen to ask how leasing was going?

Also, does anyone know if the garage wall is going to remain a blank, white wall? I imagine it could be a cool project for Nashville Wall's Project

    Didn't ask.

I'm so glad to hear this. I love this building but have always thought the HVAC units stick out like a sore thumb and really detract.

    Me too!

  5. Furthermore, I wish they'd allow tall buildings close to Broadway. I'm of the opinion that an adjacent structure does nothing to take away from the historic quality of its neighbor. The Hyatt Regency proposal (Sweldering sp) comes to mind. Juxtaposition elevates both the old and new. As much as this liberal loves a government regulation I get so frustrated with historical commissions and the like.

  6. Okay, this is completely off-topic, but every time I see a photo of downtown in certain daylight, I think the Baker Donelson building looks like a CGI rendering plopped in. It's the shade of the brick or how the windows reflect or something, but it throws me off almost every time.

I think a lot of that has to do with its awful white windows. I liken Baker Donelson to the McMansion of urban mid-rise buildings.
