As far as I can tell, the developer hasn’t submitted anything substantial to the Department of Planning & Community Development yet concerning the residential and hotel components. They have submitted phased demolition plans for portions of the existing mall structure though. Those plans are approved.

So, when is demo work expected to begin?

Looks like a Rooms To Go furniture store. They have one in NN that looks similar.

I just drove by it earlier, its got to be a Rooms to Go that's exactly how they all  look.

Thanks for the feedback!  I guess I'm not familiar with their look...

  3. Anyone know what that unique-looking building being build on the Boulevard in Virginia Beach is?  I think it's not too far from the Hayne's furniture, although on the opposite side of the road.  I haven't been able to snap a picture, but it's definitely an unusual-looking building.

  4. Things seem to come to a standstill or get cancelled quickly.  The coming soon signs have been taken down at the spot that was supposed to be Chesapeake Bay Market - and nothing is happening in there.
Also, what the heck happened with the Norfolk Food Hall?  It was supposed to open in summer, but it looks like it's barely moving along too.

    Saw this on Reddit:

“Upscale market with community feel”: Norfolk to now have downtown grocery option - WTKR

Chesapeake Bay Market will open May 1 at 300 E Main (directly across from the Icon). It is described as an “upscale market with a community feel.” It will be 5,000 SF.

Well, this has clearly been very delayed, if it's even still happening...

Been a while since we’ve heard anything on this and I’m getting concerned. I’m really hoping we can get this off the ground before the economy falters again. There’s already signs of a slowdown and if things progress too far it’ll be a long time before we get this tower.  :(

There aren't really many signs of a slowdown, I think that's just what the media wants us to believe.  The US economy is pretty stable and solid.

Former Toys R Us was purchased by East Coast Appliance and they will be relocating there.

Chinese Buffet is being redeveloped for an Aldi.

Friendlys is being redeveloped into a Discount Tire.

And since we’re along the corridor I’ll add that the parking lot at the entrance of the mall is going to be a car wash.

    Thanks!

This is such a bittersweet moment. I'm so happy to see this tower finally under construction, but I cry a little bit every time I see the original rendering. It should be noted that the architects that changed it to that uninspiring design were originally known as CMSS Architects (now Clark Nexson). Anybody who's been around this forum for a long time will recognize that name and remember just how bland their  designs used to be, so it all makes sense. I will say that the design of their own tower at Town Center isn't too bad, but I can't for the life of me understand why the developers changed architects like that.

I used to work at Clark Nexsen.  They weren't part of CMSS.  Different companies.  As to why designs get changed, that's usually factors of cost for materials, desires of the developers, and approving authorities, etc.

The Pilot says one of his top priorities is getting SPQ off the ground. I don’t know how much of that area is set in stone, but I do wonder if he will try and get more businesses over there and make that a true extension of downtown?

    SPQ?

  10. This thread isn't very active.  I wonder if anyone knows about any of the following:

Something is going on at the old Toys R Us location.  Any idea what?
Something is being built by the vacant China Garden restaurant near Military Circle (Military Hwy side) Anyone have the scoop?

And something is being built next to Applebee's where the Friendly's/Boating store was.  Who knows what it is?

Wrote to my longtime source at Pembroke Mall asking about Uptown Alley, the impending Sears vacancy and the redevelopment of the old Jason's area next to DSW.

Uptown is out. However, they are  currently working on several exciting entertainment concepts that would be similar to Uptown. Did not say why they were out, but I had heard that Uptown was focusing on expanding in overseas markets.

Boo!  I was still holding out hope that Uptown would eventually come to fruition.  I don't have high hopes for Pembroke at the moment, though it really should be prime for development/redevelopment what with the TC corridor being so hype right now.

Does anyone know what's going on over by the Top Golf?  Looks like site work for something new....maybe it's in another forum here, but if anyone has the lowdown, I'd appreciate the scoop.

Exactly.  And for our area, Wegmans will put pressure on HT and WF, while Aldi and Lidl will eventually put a hurt on Food Lion, I suspect. FL has already been losing market share year after year.

I personally liked Lidl fairly well.  I see it as very similar to Aldi, though bigger and somewhat more up-scale.  Definitely not a full-tier supermarket like Farm Fresh or Harris Teeter.  Someone I know that's familiar has said that Farm Fresh is really feeling the pinch, and that it's days are probably numbered.  I think FF has much more competition in it's segment than FL does. I don't think Aldi and Lidl are in quite the same segment that FL is.
Speaking of Wegmans, though, has anyone heard anything on the progress or time frame?  I know that the Office Max just recently relocated to the new Office Depot location, so that obstacle is out of the way.  I'm ready for demo to begin and let's get the show on the road!  LOL.  Anyone in the know with the latest and greatest?

Oh, and I keep hearing rumors that Publix could head this way...that'd be awesome.  Wegmans and Publix are two of the most highly-rated chains.  If HR can score both, we'd be siting really nice.  I do think that would be the end of FF and FL, though...and could hurt Kroger and HT to a fair degree.  Anyone else heard rumors about Publix?

    This project is dead.

Someone else ...purportedly...optioned it but not sure what's going to happen. Trying to find out.

What makes you say this is a dead project?

Trying the local today. 9 wings, a meatball cup, and dessert...$27. Figured I'd get a drink while I'm at it. A CAN of Sprite...$3. Said no thanks and changed my order to go. These prices are nowhere near justifiable.

Way too expensive, I think.  Love the place, but it's just too pricey. $3 for a canned soda?  That's steeper than movie theater prices, per oz.

IMO, waterside didn't fail because of danger, the stats show that. There was a perception if anything created by the masses, but the stats do not support dangerous, none that I've seen away. Waterside die very simply because there was no need to go there. Like you said, its a food court. Food courts were popping in the 80s and still dying in 2017. No one will go out their way, make a day of it to go to a river with little views and a dead food court. Too many options arose in the 757 after the 80s, very simple. The difference now is Cordish as a company will control the reason why people come to waterside. This really isn't rocket science. NHRA ran waterside forever, worked on the "build it and they will come concept". When the entertainment stopped, people stopped.

I hate to disagree (actually, no, it's rather fun to debate these ideas) but don't think it was that, either, at least not entirely.  I believe there were myriad factors, and it's probably more complex than any single post, but lemme try anyway.
First, the mix of establishments wasn't special.  Some restaurants, like Outback, Joe's, and Hooters, that you could go to elsewhere.  A cruddy food court.  A few boutiques that were irrelevant once MacArthur center opened. And bars - like Bar Norfolk and Have A Nice Day -   that were not nice places to enjoy an "adult beverage" but places designed to go get wasted and rowdy and had nothing else to offer (unlike someplace like Blue Moon, which is upscale, has some nice food, and isn't "seedy".)  Add to that the danger element and lack of good entertainment - plus the fact that the design did little to really make use of the water views.  One of the few exceptions to some of this was Jillian's, but it lost its luster fairly quickly.  You also had a downtown that wasn't nearly as vibrant back then.  Now, with new offices and new residential space, it's really experiencing a true gentrification.
The new Waterside is vastly different.  Way more upscale.  It will capitalize on the new dynamic in DT Norfolk.  I like what they've done.  Still a little pricey for me - and I don't drink much, so way more interested in the food options, but the "food court" is definitely not like a typical mall.  Totally different vibe.  I give it at least an A- and I think Cordish has a winner on their hands.

My problem is that i would want somebody hired by Cogan's and trained by Cogan's to make a proper Cogan's pizza. I don't want somebody that is just an assembly line cog to make the food. If somebody works at the coffee shop on Monday, and Guy's place on Tuesday, and Luk Fu on Wednesday, he is going to be mediocre at best, and the food and service will suffer. If Cordish runs all the restaurants, then they will all be mediocre, just like all the eateries run by Aramark at ODU. No real competition breeds mediocrity.

Don't know about that for certain.  I guess it's a possibility.  So far; however, seems to be fine.  Had a panini at Cogan's and it was fantastic! Also had something from The LoCal that was really good.  My only complaint is things are a bit pricey.

Went there for the first time for lunch Friday afternoon. I expected more than just a food court and some bars. Seriously underwhelming. Was very surprised to see all the "Market" shirts on the employees. Looks like they want the ability to cycle the employees between each food kiosk. That isn't a good sign.

What's not a good sign?  That they have "Market" shirts and perhaps the ability to be used where needed?  I don't understand the problem with that. As far as the establishments, there are restaurants - G.F.'s Smokehouse, along with Stripers and Chipotle coming; there are bars - PBR, Starr Hill; and there are those that are "both" like Blue Moon.  I think the mix of options is pretty great.  I do wish they had more than canned sodas in the Marketplace, and it's a bit on the pricey side to me.  But, as a venue where there is a great vibe and mix of dining and drinking and entertainment options, I think it's great.

If you're not already in line for Weezer forget it. No way in hell you're getting in now. I'm going to sit at the bar and drink and just listen, lol. They need to open ALL of Town Point Park when they have events like this. The area they have cordoned off is way too small.

This wasn't a "Town Point Park" event - this was a Waterside District event.  It's not uncommon for venues like this to have limited space.

  19. I, personally, am not disappointed at the Star Hill just being a bar rather than a micro-brewery.  I also don't feel there was any "bait-and-switch."  It's business, folks, and things often change as projects come to fruition.  I think, at the core, the new Waterside is everything that was promised (in spirit, if not literally).  I ran over last evening right after work (I literally work across the street, so that was nice and easy) and the place is *jumping*!  It just kept getting busier and busier!  Was able to grab a Cheeseburger Hoagie from The Local and it was pretty good.  Really look forward to trying some of the other places, but they were definitely overwhelmed last night and the expected "hiccups" were there too.  Still, it looks great and has quite a vibe.  I really think Cordish has done this right, and they have several other properties across the country that are really vibrant places, so I trust (hope) that they can keep this one strong.

One thing I did notice, though...that large "WATERSIDE" sign that was supposed to light up red was only just white last night....

I was able to check out the new waterside this past weekend while visiting. The brick and distress sign definitely looks nice. What I did notice is, the inside center, at least from my vantage point looks waaaaaayyyy more spacious.  Not sure if it was the lighting or just the openness look from waterside drive. I wanted to walk over, but it was wet and raining. Also seems like they have two huge led monitors going up on each corner or maybe its just huge sign mounts, not sure. If they will be lights, it will definitely livin' it up. I didn't see in the plans or pictures, but I was hoping they had an outside barge for one of the restaurants like they do here in bmore.  I think uniqueness is the key to this development.

Those are definitely LED signs.  I watched them install them. I keep waiting to see them begin testing.  It does look spacious inside.  I've been walking around the building every few days and I just keep getting more and more excited!
