  1. AA is adding an additional daily flight to PDX (Portland, OR), SMF (Sacramento), OKC (Oklahoma City), TUL (Tulsa), LIT (Little Rock), XNA (Fayetteville/Bentonville, AR), and SGF (Springfield/Brandon, MO) this summer.  Great to see CLT get more service to the West Coast and the Midwest. Hopefully SJC (San Jose) becomes year-round and ICT (Wichita) finally gets added.

  2. I'll chime in... 21/300ish is disappointing given the lofty expectations, but I'd rather have two of those with a 'transformational' (or at least better than a surface parking lot) street-level retail component than one 40/600ish tower at this point. Charlotte has an amazing skyline for a city of our size, but we are still way behind many of our peers (and most cities we aspire to be more like) in street-level presence and urban livability.

This looks better than the Embassy Suites in uptown:

I have a strange fascination with Soviet architecture (something my Russian boyfriend can't understand, haha), but some of the new apartment buildings in the working class suburbs of both Moscow and St. Petersburg look better than what we're getting here even though they're definitely still built for function over form (no gourmet kitchens with wine coolers, leashless dog parks, yoga studios, or heated saltwater pools there).

  4. On a positive note, the C/D Admirals Club has gotten some new chairs. CLT is the red-headed stepchild when it comes to Admirals Club refurbishments (even AA employees at other hubs have commented on how CLT has been left out), but the new, more modern chairs (grey with white piping) at least make the space feel less run down. However, after enjoying the oneworld lounges (and service from Cathay and JAL) in Asia a few times in the last couple weeks, the Admirals Clubs (and really everything AA does) seem like a Super 8 compared to a Ritz-Carlton.

It is gonna be bro central without a doubt. But that patio is going to be immensely important and it will only be bro heavy before 10pm on weekends, so it will be utilized well (I hope). 3rd Ward needs an "approachable" restaurant that isn't bar food. this will fill that void and their menu actually looks pretty good.

They're chugging along and should be open before panthers season. While I'm not overly enthused Bottle Cap group is putting another bring the bro's place in Charlotte there's a silver lining. Most people wouldn't have the money to put into the space as they did. With the patio this upfit is going to approach $4 million.

I think the bottom line we (you too Alex) need to look at is its going to provide a brunch, lunch, dinner place to third ward and the area needs it BADLY. We just all will not call it our night spot. No biggie

Except the food at all Bottle Cap Group's restaurants is pretty terrible. They're all bars that just happen to serve food, and they rely on the fact that when most people order food they're already drunk(ish) and can't tell or don't care that what they're being served is bad, overpriced bar food. No way I'm going to Ink & Ivy for an actual meal, and you couldn't pay me to go there at night for drinks no matter how nice the view may be from the bro tat-covered patio.

I wondered the same thing.  Apparently they are user-submitted sites from a different augmented-reality game called Ingress by the same company.

Somewhat related, on my train home yesterday I noticed the old Queen Park Cinema sign is a pokestop.  I barely had time to grab the screenshot below as I had some kind of damn bat flying outside my train car for 3 or 4 stops until I finally hit him with like my 17th pokeball.....and then my phone froze before I got credit for capturing him.  Pokefail.

Call me a crotchety old man, but I don't get this whole Pokemon Go craze. Someone finally explained the concept to me a few days ago, and I'm still trying to understand the point.  And it's potentially dangerous.

  7. Yes, please on adding murals around the city.  I've been lamenting the lack of street art in Charlotte for years, especially when we have so many blank (and so many beige) walls and parking decks in Uptown and South End.  And I love the idea of involving students and hosting competitions for local artists to design murals in prominent places.  In Bogota (which has an amazing street art scene), property owners are actively encouraging local street artists to paint murals on their buildings to prevent tagging and vandalism and attract visitors to transitional neighborhoods, something that has also transformed Wynwood in Miami and parts of the former East Berlin.

"The county said The Peebles Corp. is the nation’s largest minority-owned real estate developer."

That is really cool, especially for this project.

That's correct.  The former Director of Development and General Counsel for The Peebles Corp. are friends of mine.

Run faster. But seriously, I also run through and around uptown (3-5 days a week, 4-8 miles at a time, for 4+ years) and I have never been stopped.  Must be the ear buds...

Maybe I need to start wearing earbuds to pretend I'm listening to music.  You've seriously never had homeless guys try to get in your way while running or panhandle you when you get slowed down trying to cross an intersection?  Maybe I'm just running at the wrong times and/or need to stay away from the areas where the homeless and vagrant populations tend to congregate.  I run after I get home from work (which is often late), so I typically stick to the best-lit streets and most populated areas in Uptown after dusk for safety reasons.

Yep....that was the original name of the tower....NCNB was North Carolina Nations Bank, which became just NationsBank, which became Bank of America....super cool find!

North Carolina National Bank.  The name was changed to NationsBank after the purchase of C&S/Sovran (also a large regional bank formed from the merger of banks headquartered in Atlanta and Norfolk) in 1991.

I do think most of these are addicts of some kind or professional panhandlers but the point is the police need to crack down. When they are starting to panhandle inside the BofA retail mall (Overstreet mall) they are getting bold like my experience last weekend. This has negative implications for the street level retail in the center city. I like going uptown even though I live in the far flung suburbs but if this keeps increasing I will go elsewhere. Charlotte Center City Partners needs to get on this with uniformed ambassadors or something to discourage and alert police.  Atlanta had a real big problem but they finally cracked down as it was hurting their convention business.

I have also been panhandled in the Overstreet Mall on several occasions, and I absolutely agree the police need to crack down on this.  Removal of the bus shelters and benches on Tryon and on Trade beween College and Church would do wonders as they have been completely overtaken by the homeless and vagrant populations and are occupied almost 24/7.  Aggressive panhandling, verbal assaults, litter, brown-bagged malt liquor, bags/shopping carts of personal belonings, and the smell of body odor and urine are adding the wrong kind of "character" to Uptown in my opinion.

Maybe they're just more active / aggressive in the summer

From my experience, yes.  I run through Uptown daily, and there is rarely a day I don't get aggressively panhandled and/or followed in the warmer months.  I'm not sure where the homeless guys and/or vagrants think I'm keeping my stash of small bills (they've gone from asking for change to asking for dollars) in my pocketless running shorts.  I don't typically wear a shirt, so I guess they assume I run with singles in my shoes?

You kidding? It's one of the more unique and well designed places in the entire city. there's almost nothing else like it. It's adds a new standard to uptown, ESPECIALLY uptown

When I saw the renderings, I was hoping it would turn out a little more like Swine in Coral Gables.  Very similar space, but Swine just feels more "complete" than 204 North, and I also feel like I'm seeing this same repurposed/semi-industrial/exposed brick/reclaimed wood/faux vintage lighting/metal chair design concept everywhere now.  http://www.runpigrun.com/category/gallery/

Also, while the cocktails were fantastic, the food was rather disappointing.  I joined three friends for dinner on Friday (I got home from work late, so I didn't get to try any of the appetizers which they all said were good but not great), and three of us had issues with our proteins.  My salmon was overcooked, one friend's mahi mahi was undercooked (almost raw), and the other friend's pork chop was flavorful but VERY tough.  It was busy, and I understand there are still kinks being worked out, but I was underwhelmed, especially given all the praise here.  That said, I will and do plan to give it another shot.
