MK updates - scroll down for latest TRON and Sleepy Hollow - Fantasyland walkway construction pics.

Cory also brings up an interesting question - once TRON goes 102 in 2021 or 2022, will it be time to rethink Space Mountain, WDW’s granddaddy coaster (1975)?

    From Mice Chat

You prob already know this, but Space Mountain was supposed to be completely re-tracked back in 2009 when it went down for its last big refurb, but that got the axe due to the recession. I have been thinking that once TRON opens, Disney will have no excuse not to close Space Mountain and do a proper full ride system replacement. If they do, I would want either a straight track replacement of our existing 2- track layout with modern track and trains with audio, or swap out the entire interior with the exact ride Disneyland has (even though it wouldn't utilize all the space). I'd be good with either of those.

I can tell you personally that I chose the burbs because I could get the house I wanted for 1/5th of the price of the house I wanted closer to town.  My house was brand new.  It wasn't a project.  It didn't require further initial investment.  It didn't require compromise.  It had a nice garage for my vehicles.  It wasn't falling apart.  It wasn't retrofitted to modern amenities.

...it wasn't zoned for Edgewater High....

    That is not true.

Artificial Turf NFL Stadiums: Atlanta, Boston, Cincinatti, Dallas, Houston, New York/New Jersey, Seattle.

FIFA has said that it desired all World Cup games be played on natural grass and has specific requirements for size and surface. (I think they relented and let some games be played on specially approved "FIFA Turf" recently).  I would expect that they would try to get mostly natural grass venues for the games in america. If not NFL stadia, then perhaps college.

They will play in the NFL stadiums. They simply roll out temporary natural grass over the artificial turf.  They did this at the Citrus Bowl (which is also artificial turf BTW)  for the Mexico vs Costa Rica game in 2015.

Wait, I think I misinterpreted the post I was replying to then. I do agree that they are going to attempt to become more and more of a singular destination.  The new land will definitely be used for a new park, entertainment complex, and a few hotels when it's complete.

I don't think so, I was agreeing with you.

Let's agree to disagree. You'd be surprised how many people take trips only to Universal.

It must be the case, otherwise why keep building hotels. It will become even more of a singular destination once they develop the huge 475 acre piece of land they purchased near the convention center. No doubt it will be a 3rd theme park along with its own resorts and entertainment.

I like it so far. I thought Universal was going to try to really separate their hotels from I-Drive with a berm and lack of connections to the road, but I'm proven wrong.  I'd only hope for there to be more right up against the ROW.

EDIT: Upon viewing the actual documents, my opinion has reversed.  They are proposing a berm between the roads and side properties and the hotel.  I hope this doesn't go through the City Council looking like this because they should force Universal to abide by the same city ordinances that all other new developers have to follow.  The buildings should be built to the road (at least on I-Drive), and encourage visitors to walk I-Drive.

So help me envision this...the hotel will basically be surrounded by a landscaped wall on all sides?

  8. All I can say is that I am glad that I grew up in the 70s, 80s, and 90s going to malls, music stores, video rental stores, electronics stores, etc. I will always have those memories. It's tough watching it all die. I guess I will always have this thing in my pocket, though, right?

So, the Skydive attraction at I-Drive & Universal is literally building another location adjacent to Wonderworks.  When that opens, their original location will shut down.

This construction is on the northern end of that big grass area, close to YardHouse, not at the corner with Via Mercado/ Austrian Ct.

Just so everyone is on the same page, the link above is a new development from Inflight Dubai going to I-drive 360. iFLY is also re-locating to I-drive next to Wonderworks. There are going to be TWO indoor skydiving facilities 1 mile apart:

    http://www.indoorskydivingsource.com/news/ifly-orlando-to-close-new-facility-to-open-in-2017/

Orlando, and I-Drive specifically has been busy with indoor skydiving announcements as of late. Also announced this week were more details on another 14 foot single sided recirculating wind tunnel. This tunnel is not an iFLY tunnel however and instead is being built by new Dubai-based wind tunnel manufacturer Extreme Flight. This location is called Extreme Flight Orlando and the project site sits only 1 mile away from the new iFLY Orlando location.

    • The South Terminal station is intended to connect the airport to SunRail, a light-rail service to the International Drive area, and the planned Brightline train service to South Florida

This statement mentions a SunRail connection as well as light rail to I-drive, but doesn't explicitly say the light rail is what is going to connect the airport station to SunRail. Should I assume the light rail service to I-drive is going to hit the Sand Lake Road SunRail stop before continuing on to I-drive?

  11. I don't know why people are saying this location is so small compared to the OMA. Below is a quick and dirty overlay, to scale, of the OMA sitting on top of that corner. I let the front hang over Robinson a bit, but you can see where a slight reconfiguration of the footprint of OMA it could fit entirely into that corner taking over the parking lot areas. They could build a new parking deck on the same spot as the old one with a pedestrian bridge over Robinson.

I love that the garages go up first.   Makes all the NIMBYs shake that all their worst fears will be realized and that the whole project will be a concrete box.

LOL, this is so true. Downtown Maitland City Centre put up their concrete monolith garage looming high and people are going nuts like that will be the finished product.

  13. So the theme park rumor might have some legs, wow. It was said to be a national amusement park brand. Cedar Fair and Six Flags are really the only two big names in the game that aren't already here. I am really hoping it is Cedar Fair. If it ends up being either of these brands, it would be absolutely huge news. I don't see how they could incorporate the cinema and Bass Pro though.

Yeah, I don't know why I said 28.5. I was just responding to that post to mention that the standing section doesn't allow for an increase in capacity and I used the same number he did.

Now that would be fairly impressive for names sake.   It makes sense as SoDo doesn't have any "better burger"'places - closest is a very depressing Five Guys.

Would be great to see lunch time foot traffic develop between the CNL center and this project to activate the lake.

Just curious, what is wrong with the Five Guys? I do remember the tables were not cleaned when I went there. Food was great though.

The roof should look quite a bit better once the entire building is completed.

I think it's going to look awesome when the entire building is done. It is already such a large building, but it's still less than 2/3 complete so that roof is going to loom over the entire plaza. I like that our arts center doesn't look like any other. We have so little in Orlando that is truly unique.
