Baton Rouge has the 3rd most solar energy potential per capita in the US. Lafayette is #9 and Shreveport is #28. Mobile is #20 and Beaumont is #8. I've said before I would love for Louisiana to embrace and incubate the renewable energy industry, and consolidate the corporate wing of that industry in Baton Rouge and New Orleans.

Do you think an urban growth boundary would have any popularity?Given that so little of the the remaining developable land is outside of the flood zone, they not only need to increase density of housing in Baton Rouge, but they need to also reduce the width of the standard middle class suburban lot size to 45'-50'. Make them a little deeper if they need to make space for a yard and pool, but people need to be encouraged to build UP and not out.
Definitely only after I build my house though. [emoji4]

Is it going to be 2 lanes? Thought 4 lanes and sidewalks were supposed to be apart of it?Perkins-Picardy Connector Under Construction on the eastern edge of Perkins Rowe

Are you saying the sites are appealing because there is enough connectivity with the I-10 and 190 bridges?Yep.
I honestly think the lack of a bridge in Plaquemine oddly makes West Baton Rouge (along LA1 or LA415) and north Baton Rouge (Howell/Airport/US61 area) particularly appealing because sites in those areas can be approached easily by either of the existing two bridges depending on traffic or time of day. That's likely why Amazon went with LA415/I-10 for their sorting center, and Cortana for their fulfillment center. Unfortunately there's probably less than a dozen suitable sites that can support 1,000,000+ square foot centers in those areas given the recent developments there in the recent past like Coca-Cola, Criterion, Amazon, Katoen Natie, and those damn solar farms.
You'd be surprised at how many available plots in West Baton Rouge are bisected by pipelines or are locked behind a railroad crossing. There are a lot of options, but it's not as wide open as you'd think.
I can't understate how frustrated I am by the lack of focus at BTR airport. This is their moment to attract freight cargo, and they are still sort flat footed. They need another 1,000 ft of runway now.

I agree, Cajun. I hope the entire south Louisiana region can work together to best prepare for this investment and prepare our citizens to fulfill the employment requirements. I think West BR, Livingston, Tangipahoa, and St. Tammany could benefit the most. But I would imagine the state would have go get serious about another bridge. The Baton Rouge area would do well to start identifying and zoning sites for regional distribution centers of up to 1,000,000 square feet (at least 3-4 locations like this)- preferably located near zoning that can facilitate truck stops and OTR truck related infrastructure.
Where Amazon goes, other retailers like WalMart, Lowes and Target often show up with new e-commerce focused DC's very quickly. Something like this but without the rail connections and larger sites for bigger DC footprints might be exactly what we need now. As close to I-10/I-12 as possible. Maybe that means the area around the airport, or perhaps Livingston Parish.
I'm saying there will be demand for things like this in the Baton Rouge-Hammond-Lafayette area very soon.
The better prepared Baton Rouge can be in attracting these things, the more likely it gets those jobs for unskilled labor. IMO the La/415/I-10 area in Port Allen, the area around I-110/Airline, or the area around around Choctaw/Central Thruway in Baton Rouge would be the ideal location, as they are very close to a lot of potential workers, the highways, the airport, and are mostly suitable for massive sprawling buildings like this.
It might be worth the BRAC/Parish leadership approaching Target, Walmart, Lowes, Home Depot, etc. and offering to help build access roads or sort out drainage if they are willing to locate large DC's in the area.

BTR is pretty small for a city the size of Baton Rouge. I checked LFT(523k), SHV(683k), and BTR (822k), then I checked COS, they're doing 1.6 million! I would personally like to see a Denver flight added.
Thanks for the stats Cajun. Always thought BR Regional Airport was at a disadvantage being only 65 miles away from an "International" airport like NOLA. Always thought BR's airport was small for a city it's size.
Wonder when the "Southern Re-Route((13)) happens ; if ever?? That's an interesting reconfiguration; completely stopping Plank Road ; veering in Left onto Hooper hooking back around. Would there be a small " Flyover"; or likely just an "Underpass" for West bound traffic on Hooper approaching Harding Blvd.??
Was actually a bit surprise when they did the Northern Re-Route years ago curving the road East the
Just checked Little Rock, they are averging over 2 million passengers, but don't have an International airport and hour away, plus LFT on the other side.

The bridge looks to be single track and doesn't split into a double track until it crosses under I-310. Why would they build two bridges even if it was double tracked the whole way?The other set of tracks. There are two.

I love this roundabout, been asking for it for years. But I really wish zoning would not allow for that type of development to be designed that way. (Wall facing the street) It would look much better with homes fronting the street. Now that stretch is permanently empty.

Thats been done, or close to it as of my last trip home in March. There are a flurry of articles about this in The Advocate, Business Report, etc. Looks like if the bill passes, Amtrak is going to start setting up service. Louisiana would get about $250 million in funding to upgrade the tracks, although the details aren't really clear yet.
They will have to replace the old KCS bridge over the spillway though - to the tune of about $65 million.

Thanks for the link. I'd never seen it before. I'm going to delve into it more in depth when I get home.NICE MAP! Yep Baton Rouge just a spur; Is the RR Bridge @Hwy 190 old bridge up to Amtrack Standards?
Think it would be KC Southern R.R. The Station would likely go at Government Street near Red Stick Social/Electric Depot ...pass thru the Mall of La/Medical corridor

I wonder if they plan on using existing infrastructure. And where would our station be? I've always wanted the LASM to be returned to its former glory.Notice anything interesting in this Amtrak map of "planned new services"?
Yep...that's a Baton Rouge-New Orleans rail link. I only wish they were planning to move beyond Baton Rouge to Shreveport and Dallas.

How true is this statement?"everyone in southern Louisiana works for the oil and gas industry - including the waitress at the local restaurant, the surgeons at the hospital, and the lawyers downtown".
I feel like this statement is still "mostly" true, which is a sign that the state still needs to diversify its economy.
Thats an interesting quote.
It rings true for alot of businesses that depend on the ebb and flow of the petrochemical industry.

Where were they on Essen? I remember they had that building near the old Barnes and Nobles on Corporate.I think Brown and Root will eventually move downtown (or back to the old Essen digs). Unfortunately demand for office space is down across the country now b/c of the Pandemic.
It's too bad Epic Piping leased space off of Airline instead of downtown. They'd be a cool anchor tenant to one of those older towers. It would be neat to see the word EPIC on one of those buildings.

I hope it's not true. He was my favorite. But if it is true, looks like LSU will be in trouble for years to come from sanctions.So....ugh...whats yall's opinion of Les Miles now? Fired from Kansas.
I'd bet that F King Alexander (Former LSU president) might get the Axe over at Oregon. Couldn't happen to a worse human being IMO.

I was just back home for a few days and the skyline looks noticeably denser with the addition of these mid-rise apartments. No we need to ban garden style offices and force them downtown!

I think I remember it being a downtown specific project.Yeah the light synchronization is straight up clown world! Think they finally got it semi-right in downtown area of BR; but the rest of the city?? But they like to talk a lot before something actually gets done!
But seems no matter where i go ....The Woodlands TX ; Gulf Shores AL or Orlando FL....The the traffic light set up sucks!

https://www.theadvocate.com/baton_rouge/news/article_f9ff8bfe-8595-11eb-aaac-23a7cb3795a8.htmlHomebuilder and lumber company owner Grady Melancon recently won approval to begin selling lots in the first 77-home filing of the Riverton neighborhood that has been under construction for several years in the Burnside area.
But, before the developer of Riverton can get too deep into selling more lots in later filings, he must conduct a new traffic study for the 780-home subdivision and also build a roundabout in front of his new neighborhood, an Ascension Parish planning official said.
Commissioner Aaron Chaisson recently brought the four-year-old requirements on the Riverton project to light in an attempt to correct the record before there were any misunderstandings, he said.
New parish planning documents associated with the first filing's approval on March 10 had indicated Melancon and Riverton wouldn't have faced those requirements until much further along in the project, prompting Chaisson to research the minutes and online video recordings of past meetings.
It turns out what was in the commission's planning packet this month, Chaisson said, was incorrect and effectively pushed back the requirements by several filings.
"So, I just want to make sure there's no misunderstanding between staff, the commission and the developer on the trigger for both the roundabout and the new traffic impact study. … That's about 300 lots difference," Chaisson said.
If the Sunshine Project (Formosa in St. James) gets built, you will probably see 10 more developments just like it in that area along with retail and support businesses to match. Hopefully those developments will be a little more inter-connected.
I-10 between LaPlace o Prairieville will eventually look like I-10 between Colton and Pomona....or I-45 between League City and Houston. Not counting the swamp area of course. [emoji4]
You know dang well they won't be interconnected, for fear of "people."

Great news. This is the capacity increase I like! I also like the idea of a new airport along I-12, although that conflicts with my rail line proposal.

I found them on the web, scrolling through posts sucks when on my phone.I posted the link to the layouts a few pages back. They are changing the radius of the curve and adding a significant shoulder (20' or more) to the outside and a 12' shoulder to the inside . They are also adding sound walls, LED lighting, stronger barriers, and a better banking to handle trucks at highway speed.
IMO the real positive change will be the combination of the new off ramp for Terrance/Washington on the left hand side being present and the fact that both I-10 eastbound lanes will be continuous through the city. Traffic won't have to merge into I-110 traffic like they do now, and traffic that exits from I-110 to Washington or Dalrymple can do so before the split. I-10 traffic that exits at Dalrymple will do so around the current Washington street exit and take the service road (Braddock), which should IMO be a candidate for some commercial/service related redevelopment on the eastbound side of the highway.
Yeah....the pain that we are going through to expropriate those properties alongside the highway for this widening won't happen again. The deck of I-10 won't be widened again in the next 50 years after this, if ever. LADOTD won't go through this frustrating process again, and they are going to make sure the deck has enough width to accommodate an additional lane if they absolutely have to - but it will cost some shoulder space in some spots.
I'm putting the chances of a new bridge in the Plaquemine area at 10% in 15 years., but 50% in 25, and closer to 70% in 50 years. [emoji38]
0% chance I-10 gets widened through Baton Rouge after this project within the next 50 years.
I really like the roundabouts at Dalrymple, Washington, and Terrace, the proposed improvements for pedestrians for the Nairn St bridge, the removal of the Perkins Rd ramp, the new sidewalks, and the new entrance ramp for eastbound traffic via Dalrymple.
I'm still concerned about westbound traffic crossing the Mississippi though, it's still a two lane flyover, and when I was taking that journey downtown every morning, traffic never really got stuck in the I-110 lanes. So it's good that they will be separate now but the bottleneck is still there. Similar to this is the eastbound traffic coming from the westbank, having an extra lane isn't going to relieve that congestion.
I'd say I fully support this project, as yall know I love infrastructure, but I still have no faith in reduction in traffic during peak hours. Non-peak hours have a bleak outlook as well (imo).

I didn't take into consideration the bridge deck. How are they going to fix the I-110 interchange? I see that they've begun or finished construction on the Terrace Ace exit ramp via Google but are they going to add capacity to the WB I-10 flyover? Or is the interchange part of the whole project. I might've missed that. I kind of agree with the reversible HOV lane.Don't think there will be any effort to widen that highway beyond 10 lanes given that the MR bridge deck itself is only 6 lanes wide and the viaduct itself will be at the far range of the existing right of way. They are actually acquiring a lot of land already just to do this and add the exit around Terrace and Dalrymple, and it's not a painless process to do it.
It's only going to be 8 when they are complete (maybe by 2030 LOL), but they will have the width to re-stripe to 10 if they needed to in a pinch, although they'd be forgoing a lot of shoulder in some spots. IMO they should at least include a reversible commuter lane down the center in the current design. 8 is too little, too late. They are also fixing some alignment issues that should have never existed at the I-110 interchange and a laundry list of lighting/barrier shortcomings on the whole stretch.
I know the new bridge is a long ways off, but I sincerely think we'll see a new one built in the Plaquemine or Brusly area before we see I-10 widened to 12 or more lanes through the city of Baton Rouge.
Well I also agree that we will see another bridge before we see another widening of this stretch through the city but I have little faith it even breaks ground this decade or half of the next. Doesnt it usually take years to plan the actual bridge once a site is selected?
I'd still like to see Hwy 30, south of its interchange with the new bridge, to be a controlled acces highway all the way to I-10.
