The mere act of pointing out that THEY are obsessed with US in so much as they constantly make comparisons between ORF's and RIC's numbers is not tantamount to a desire on my part to compare the two, nor is it an attempt to share in their negativity. LOL. Far from it. We are who we are. We accept that. We are comfortable in our own skin.  We'll gladly play the underdog. And WE are not the ones with a chip on our shoulder.

Yes! Sorry, wasn't trying to accuse you of trying to further this "rivalry." Haha

Can't wait to see all the celebrations going on in the Richmond forum when their numbers come in. They know they have beat us hahaha ...it makes their year.

I don't need their negativity. I'm fine not comparing ourselves to Richmond when we're ahead and I will still not care about them if their passenger numbers for 2023 were higher than ours

Another juicy morsel from the UP-RVA-RIC Hit Parade:

"With that said, RIC is getting better.  It’s not where we would like it to be yet, but we are cheering it on so that one day, it will be THE airport for ALL Virginians outside of the DC area.  Just something to look forward to!  I believe it will happen one day!

I would love to know the scientific reasoning behind this claim... or at least get next week's lotto numbers from this person 😂

It's their own fault. They cancel and delay routes before they even start. Even more, most people have no clue what "Breeze" even is. They have time to turn things around, but some big changes are going to have to take place.

I agree! They could benefit from some more marketing

Guess what? RDU just nailed a direct flight to Paris on Air France! I gotta say, that's pretty cool and interesting news. RDU has been killing it in terms of growth, and that's a big win for their airport. You know what? I'm willing to bet that in the next 10-15 years, Hampton Roads as a whole is gonna head in that direction too.

And let me tell you, with this announcement, ORF is sitting pretty for the future. Personally, I think our chances of getting a direct international route just shot up by a huge margin.

Now, here's the thing. RIC is just a two-hour drive from DC or RDU. So, any airline would think twice about offering a non-stop international service there. Mainly because people would just hop in their cars and drive. But you know what's great about ORF? We're perfectly situated, making it a no-brainer for a foreign airline to serve us. We're a coastal town, and we're the gateway to the Outerbanks. I can definitely see that being a ad on some billboard in Germany.

I don’t know if you all have been keeping up with the news, but Breeze just submitted documents to the government to authorize them to offer international flights. From what I hear, the first offerings will be to Mexico out of Provo and Tampa. Very interesting news, as ORF is soon to be the proud keeper of a couple of A220’s.

Since the launch, we’ve only had the E190 and E195s. Who knows, maybe that non-stop to Cabo is only a couple years away.

Just for some context, they already have a nonstop flight from RDU-CDG. Delta currently operates it. Air France is basically coming in and taking over that route. I feel like RDU has always been a bit of a dark horse with their air traffic and routes. Certainly something for ORF to shoot for

I’m surprised no one has tried Toronto or one of the islands, or even Mexico. With Half Moone offering cruises you would think ORF would shoot for at least the Caribbean.

Southwest has a decent amount of Caribbean destinations and with Spirit starting up at ORF soon, I'm hopeful that there will be enough demand for at least one of those carriers to start up flights down there!

So going back to the airport. What actually needs to be done(project or otherwise) to get international flights? I know having one seamless security area and that's going to be fixed soon. But what else?

It has to be a demand thing. I know Virginia Beach does a lot of international marketing (I've seen some of their ads in foreign languages, which is cool), and I think having stronger international recognition as a tourist destination is a big one.

The other side is ramping up business/non-tourism travel to international hub cities like Toronto. I live in Erie, PA right now and our airport is technically international and we had flights to Canada a long time ago. I don't think it will take a lot to upgrade the facilities other than make sure they can cater to a reasonably sized commercial flight. I have no idea what the facilities in gate 1 look like.

Absolutely. Im not sure if you can tell, but I was really reallying to avoid directly saying that. I did not feel like starting a war just incase any of them happened to get defensive over it.

Truth is, they do throw alot of shade over us. If you read the comments that are directed towards us, you can see that its usually somthing about flights, size, and how nice the airport is. However, I think they forget we are one of the only Middle Sized Hubs in the state.

I dont want to throw shade back at them, because RIC is a nice airport too. However, I will say that it looks like they are a little envious of ours.

I agree with you completely. I definitely do not want to start a forum war!

Now, back to us just talking about ORF!

Well, I want some fact checking done for us.
I saw some posts in the richmond version of this feed. Obviously our convos are very similar in terms of news, flights, ect. However one post stuck out at me. They claimed that our Airport could not sustain and is not ready for international fights and that theirs is. Now, inherently that sounds like a harsh way to put it, however I think it begs the question on IF we are actually ready for that type of traffic in light of our faster growth.

Are we really ready to deal with international flights of ORF?

And im not saying that I think we will get any, im just asking to see what yall think on this as well.

I can't really comment on the logistics of the airport's readiness for international flights, but I have also lurked over there a few times and the amount of shade they throw at ORF is insane and unwarranted IMO. Interesting that we don't really compare ourselves to RIC as much...

Great stuff. After we get our security redone and able to use the international gate for connecting flights… game changer for Breeze.

This is awesome news! I am intrigued by the last part. Is Breeze in talks with ORF staff to use the international gate??

    New Breeze Route:

    • Norfolk (ORF) to Los Angeles (LAX) - 2x weekly starting May 19

This will be on another A220. I’ve read reports of two more new routes coming in the future. I would guess San Diego and Provo.

    Woot! What wonderful news!!

Continuing from the St Paul's thread...

From City Council 23 Aug agenda...

"As part of the agreement, the Developer shall commence construction within 60 days after the Closing Date and follow the construction schedule terms.

The Developer has secured financing with Virginia Housing and is working to close within the next sixty days. Virginia Housing does not accept rights or reverter on their loans, but VH has financing requirements and timelines that will arguably give the city adequate assurances that the project we have negotiated for will be completed".

So, this project will likely break ground before the end of the year.

Not only "likely" to break ground this year, but it must break ground this year because of their timeline of bond approvals with Virginia Housing!

    Are you delusional?
1, our government is definitely not fascist.
2, The Military is one of the biggest providers and contributors to the area.
3, We have the biggest navel base in the world. They are not going anywhere anytime soon or later.
4, Get to work on doing your research for understanding Norfolk and our metro as a whole. You obviously dont understand the benefits we get from the military even if there are a few set backs or obstacles on our way to a city success story.

Ugh this guy isn't even worth your time. The trolls that have infiltrated urbanplanet have way too much time on their hands. Look at this guy's comment history, he has no idea what he's talking about

Yup!! Just before this announcement Breeze worked out our catering issue that I mentioned previously!

The A220 is coming to ORF, and it’s going to be here to stay. Breeze needs more gates. We currently use B16, B17, and B18. However, we share B17 and 18 with Frontier. It’ll be interesting to see what their plan is! I’m guessing at least 2 A220s will be based in ORF to start.

Next base opening is Provo in Utah, Near Salt Lake City.  Definitely wouldn’t be surprised if we end up getting that route.

    Fantastic news!

At 48:24 you get an example of why modern architecture gets watered down in this city. Not everything has to be “historical”…

I get what you are saying, though in this case I think this was just one board member who didn't understand that the developer was simply following the guidance prescribed by the City. To me, it's an example of different City boards not understanding each other, not communicating, and having competing interests.

But when she said, "I feel like I'm in Virginia Beach..." oh brother!

I work for Breeze as a FA. I can provide some updates from meetings. Firstly Norfolk airport has a major catering issue with Breeze. Currently all of our A/C get catered on a turn in Pittsburg. The catering company breeze partners with is not in norfolk. This is a large issue when breeze is trying to expand.

Secondly, Breeze has had low passenger counts on its flights. I see this first hand nearly everyday. The best preforming routes would be Tampa and Providence. The other routes had to be cut back, and even one was suspended.

So this lead breeze to make the call to move their base from ORF to BDL. This hasn’t been announced yet, it will most likely be postponed due to the problems their having with the A220. But that’s another story.

In short the Norfolk base will stay open to Charter operations. This means the base will simply house flight attendants and pilots and a few breeze E jets. Their charter operations are very strong and pulling in over 100k per.

Norfolk will still receive Breeze flights it will just no longer be a focus city. More on this will follow in the future. But internally, they’ve already stopped sending new people to this base.

Well this is sad news, but it's nice to have some insider info. *sigh*

They don’t invest in development projects. They like buying apartment portfolios and selling them off individually.

I interned for Harbor Group several years ago in asset management. Yes they buy/sell properties. But like most real estate investment firms, they generally improve the buildings they acquire pretty substantially adding higher levels of finishes and amenities. Goal is to retain and improve occupancy. I am in strong agreement that I wish they would build up their downtown Norfolk portfolio

  18. 6 hours ago, mintscraft56 said:

Thats true but what we hoped for was to actully reach guide line limits. Its seems this is almost a minimum. You and I have seen that the buildings can be up to 5/6 stories too depending on first level parking but to have a bunch of 2 story developments is slightly disappointing given this is a major project made to grow Norfolk back into the shining city it once was.

I want high rises downtown as much as the next person, but the on-site replacement housing calls for affordable housing. Even with lumber price being what they are right now, it is still significantly more expensive to build steel frame buildings than it is wood frame buildings, and you can't really build higher than 5 (maybe 6) stories with wood frame. We will hopefully see taller buildings when more mixed-income and market-rate housing is proposed, but since the focus right now is on replacement housing for public housing residents, the majority of the buildings are going to be low- to midrise.

I say East Ghent because in the 70s, the city promised to offer housing to the outgoing residents, only to build the overpriced townhouses along Princess Anne Rd. I think Tidewater Gardens residents see a repeat of that happening, although I haven’t seen any indication that the city would do so.

First time posting here in a few years, but I had to get in on the good discussion!

I would counter this argument in that in the 70s, the City was not under federal obligations they currently are under the Uniform Relocation Act, since this is a federally funded redevelopment of housing that currently received federal operating and capital subsidies. I can appreciate and understand the concerns of Tidewater Gardens residents, and I really get why they are skeptical of the City/NR&HA keeping their promises. I guess I am just a bit more hopeful (maybe naively so) that since the URA has such strict requirements on relocation and displacement, that these residents will either certainly be guaranteed housing (whether with a project-based or housing choice voucher) in the redeveloped community, or will be given a large sum equivalent to 42 or 60 months of replacement housing payments. I know that the money is no replacement for the community itself, but it's not insignificant either.

I have spent the last few years working in a community development department that receives federal housing funds, so I have had to learn pretty quickly what temporary and permanent displacement entails!
