    Sorry, not buying that.

The original developer of the Portsmouth Casino bailed when they moved it inland from the waterfront. They don't even have another developer lined up yet. Norfolk Casino will definitely be built first.

You don't have to buy it. She has been on this casino stuff for decades. She is one of the most senior and powerful Senators in Virginia. No casino bill is passing without "her casino."   Northam ain't crossing her over this, especially considering his past racial problems.

But the Norfolk one was much further along than Portsmouth. They would've been first out the gate.

The pilot has absolutely nothing on this.

The only casino in Hampton Roads will be in Portsmouth because of Louise Lucas...you can bet on that. The tribe is smartly moving in another direction.

Maybe, maybe not. Norfolk seems to have a bit more will and fortitude when it comes to pursuing major projects than Va. Beach does. That drive can make a big difference. A lot of this article is speculation from people not involved with this particular application. The developer stated they expect things to take a far shorter time, and I’m going to assume that they have a better feel for where they are in the process. We’ll see.

One casino in the Hampton Roads region is the only economically viable possibly.  I see a casino in Portsmouth due to Louise Lucas happening faster than any Native American options.

  4. Most conference tournaments are like this......scrub teams usually don't draw early,,,,I expect it to really pick up on Thursday

.The crowds will be light for the MEAC starting out the week but just wait until Thursday, Friday, and especially Saturday.  Granby street and the entire downtown will be swamped from 12 pm til 2 am.  There are a lot of day parties and after parties taking place at the local clubs/bars/restaurants/marriot hotel.

  5. I'm not really impressed, unfortunately. The concourse upgrades are okay, but I doubt that's helping Scope get to the next level any more than the upgrades from a few years ago. Honestly, I'd rather see the money for the conference center go towards a state of the art arena, but I guess it's all on VB now.

What exactly is the point of this "Pavilion"? Is it basically just front offices for the Admirals and Seven Venues, with a few conference rooms? Would events like job fairs be held in these conference rooms the way they are at The Ted? I don't mean to prejudge, but it just seems like a lot of work for an annex that's more or less for Scope

    employees.

I dunno what people were expecting, if you have been inside Scope before, you realize its pretty much impossible to add more seats/luxury boxes. So the city has gone about renovating Scope at the vision of being attractive to mid-sized events/concerts like the MEAC, the high school basketball tournaments, ect. I really don't see a problem with it. If this area is to get a big time arena, Virginia Beach is going to half to build it.

  6. Planning council makes recommendations on food trucks...and kinda misses the point.

The public areas referred to (i.e. Scope, "The Plot") are cool, but I don't think having a food truck on Granby would hurt the businesses the way this planning council thinks. Honestly, during lunch hour, what restaurants are people in DT Norfolk flocking towards? Those places get businesses during the dinner hours.

None to my knowledge. This whole situation is a joke. Food trucks draw people out of their office who normally wouldn't leave for lunch. It complements traditional restaurants by increasing foot traffic. It's Norfolk, so I'm not surprised something progressive or outside the box is being shot down.

  7. Nobody takes Dougherty seriously, she writes at a high school level, and hardly offers anything insightful or thought provoking. I wouldn't be surprised if she writes most of columns wine drunk.

Like Sessoms said, its a 50/50 shot this gets done, and I hope it falls through. This area desperately needs a game changer IMHO.

  8. This area needs a new arena, this region misses out on numerous major concerts, sports tournaments, and other events because The Scope is a dump. I'm not even worried about attracting a pro team at the moment. I think out of the top 50 metros in this country, Hampton Roads may have the worst arena situation, next to Richmond. :whistling:

  9. In this market, a new arena would cost more towards 200 million dollars not 250, for example the new Phoenix hockey arena, and companies are cutting back on things like naming rights, 8.7 million ain't happening, but I could see somewhere around 2 million a year. I don't know what city is going to do it, but I see an arena happening in the near future.

  10. Glad to see they are still moving ahead despite the economy. These project will provide much needed middle class/moderate level housing in downtown, and it will also do wonders in increasing foot traffic after the 9-5 rush.

  11. Everything is in place in the Norfolk metro to step up 1st. Northern VA is basically D.C. and they have n need for a 18,000-25,000 seat spot due to it being a part of the D.C/Baltimore mega metro area!!! The part of the state that has to step up is Richmond and Norfolk! Some will argue this as wrong and I hear the No's NOW,hahahahah! I say build it between Norfolk and Richmond in Williamburg and share in the cost with the Richmond area to make it a joint venture. If not that it has to be a joint thing cost wise with The big southside cities together(Norfolk/Va Beach in terms of popularity etc.)!

Arena built in between metros(Old Cleveland Coliseum) or the burbs(USAir Arena(DC), don't and haven't work. The new arena is going to have to be in a city center near public transportation.

  12. As the saying goes, if they build it, they will come. Honestly, it is quite amazing in the entire state of Virginia, there isn't a modern pro style 18k-20k arena. There is going to be a real interesting race to build a "real" arena between Norfolk and Virginia Beach, heck, you can even add Richmond, because they won't be keeping the CAA tournament for long in that dump they call the Coliseum. I would have to guess Virginia Beach is the best position to do it with a Town Center location combined with light rail, especially considering who is mayor now. I just think Norfolk may have too much on its plate the next 5-10 years.(i.e. removal of projects, new court house, light rail overruns, ect.)

  13. I don't care who does it, but this region needs a new arena. The Scope and Spaceship are utter embarrassments for a region of our size. I'm not even harping on the issue due to pro sports, we also miss out on concerts, NCAA events, and other potential events.

  14. I'm not talking about race...I am talking about young kids (well some older) who are disruptive, obnoxious, very loud and that can turn away some shoppers. One time when i was there one guy kept bugging me to give him some money. I am a minority myself so I wouldn't target out one race because it isn't like that. But the mall has gone downhill with the cleanliness, selection, etc.

Exactly, that's why many malls ban teenagers after a certain time unless they are with a parent.

  15. The Boones have been a shady operation for years. Not surprised one of them would pull a stunt like this. They probably are really short on cash due to the real estate crash. I find it kinda funny when Norfolk's power players fight another in public.
