Developers are chomping at the opportunity to redevelop aging hotels at the Oceanfront and want the city to chip in, said Rigney, who sat down for a wide ranging interview this month in the economic development board room in Town Center.

“There are serious developers wanting to invest mega-millions of dollars in our resort area,” he said. “Those guys come to us and say, ‘Hey, if we tore these things down and put something new up, can you help us with parking, water, sewer and the like?'”

To the surprise of absolutely no one, this is now on indefinite hold. I'm begging City Council not to propose any other major projects unless they are 110% positive they will move forward. I'm so sick and tired of this city promising one big project after another that's never even gotten close to a groundbreaking, let alone a ribbon cutting. You constantly hold the football out like Lucy, and so many of us fall for it like Charlie Brown.

Performing arts venue on Scope Plaza X
Apartments on the open lot at MacArthur X
Anything regarding the future of MacArthur X
    Redeveloping Military Circle X
Light rail going anywhere past EVMS and Newtown Road X
The casino ? although I'm pretty sure it'll also be X

To the councilmembers who lurk this forum, it's a reason people leave this area. Charlotte, Raleigh, Nashville and God knows how many other similar-sized markets would've completed most or all of the above, regardless of economic conditions or a pandemic. Your inability to pull the trigger on any major project and abide by the status quo is pathetic, and this is coming from someone who has defended you on various occasions. Thanks for nothing.

I feel your pain /: what else is there to say, other than that we just don’t have a lot going for us. Even the wind turbine things are hitting a snag and other areas are beating us to it.  It’s getting late in the game to expext any of these major developments to make a meaningful difference here

  3. What an incredible transformation. It would be nice to get an update on how many ppl are living downtown. It would be amazing if we could get some new retail/bar announcements. We need some live music (Nashville or Austin) establishments on Granby. Also, the city needs to bring back First Fridays.

  4. Not sure if this has been discussed yet, but planning commission approved an additional 176 units at the Southern Pines development.

There’s an affordable housing element, which I’m sure we will be seeing more of with the need for 2000+ Amazon workers in the near future

  5. As part of the company’s Delivery Hub, the Business Services team provides a variety of specialized support for Booz Allen employees in areas including customer service, help desk, and HR operations. Establishing a Business Services operations center in Norfolk is aligned with a multi-year, multi-location transformation strategy designed to efficiently scale shared services support for Booz Allen’s rapidly growing business.

The company has relocated senior leaders to Norfolk and already filled more than 60 Business Services positions locally. These roles joined several hundred Norfolk-aligned Booz Allen staff providing a variety of innovative technical support to defense, federal civilian, and national security clients in areas such as specialized intelligence and space system capabilities, warfighting capability development, and mission readiness analytics solutions across the digital battlespace.

The company expects to double its Business Services team in the next year and to continue to add new regional jobs and infrastructure investments over the next five years.

VB approves (7-4) new music festival in October, same week as Boardwalk Art Show. We truly have witnessed an explosion in events at the Oceanfront. Incredible, really. I commend the City for putting their money where their mouth is when it comes to tourism investment.

If any of you feel so inclined, please send a letter of support to our council members, so they don’t think there’s only opposition in regards to these facilities and the request to fund the road.

Tuesday night, Virginia Beach City Council voted 10-1 to approve a development agreement between the city and the Panattoni Development Company to move the project forward.

Construction could now begin before the end of the year on the combined 237 acres, which straddles both sides of Dam Neck Road near where it meets Harpers Road.

In total, the company behind the development is expected to invest more than $383 million and create more than 1,000 new jobs, according to the city. Those jobs will pay an average of $17 per hour at the large facility and $20 per hour at the 219,000-square-foot facility.
