Just FYI for the comments about FedEx Forum not being built for hockey.

    1) It was initially built from day one with the ability to host ice hockey.

    2) With 300-400 million dollar renovations on tap u can certainly address the sight line issues if there are prohibitive to hockey.

    3) The arena has hosted NHL once and there are no reports I’ve seen that state the sight lines were horrible for hockey.

Unfortunately, the park was totally trashed by Monday, looked like a war zone after a weekend of abuse. The greatest flaw of the design is that it cannot withstand  Memphis crime and our careless citizenry.

I have heard or seen nothing of this please do not bring this type of energy to this Memphis blog this is about truth and positivity not speculations.

A bunker and a cinder block...now those are descriptions I have not yet heard, but they are not far off.

Not sure how this passed the aesthetic and design panel test? Who approved this? I realize architecture, aesthetic and design are subjective, but this is a MAJOR missed opportunity for Brooks Museum to build something truly everlasting, dynamic and classic, on the downtown Memphis skyline.

Instead, to me it resembles an unfinished building base, and comes across flat, and so basic.

There is something called a budget and there is only so much glass you can have in an art museum.  I think the design is simple but its about the materials it will be beautiful once done.

While the park is an improvement, it still looks very suburban.  Too much like Shelby Farms. It’s a shame they didn’t have the money or imagination to build something truly spectacular with an iconic centerpiece.  The night time lighting needs to be brighter as there are many dark areas. I would worry at lot about safety at night and hope the Memphis police will have a lot of presence both day and night.

No the pictures dont do it justice you have to see it in person and keep in mind the large grass spaces were left for Memphis in May.

That's good to hear.  From all different sources, I've heard/read that the Asian Night Market was an overwhelming success.  Hopefully Blue Oval city and other projects will spur more development that can give the metro area a big boost in growth.

That event was packed i went and was not expecting traffic out on cleveland street it was way bigger than i could have imagined.

The garage was completed in ‘17. Yes, it is an awkward spot. It does seem that the parking garage retail spaces take awhile to get filled. All the spaces in the Peabody Place garage took 25 years or so to fully lease when Havana Mix Cigar lounge expanded. Don’t know if the Westin garage spaces have ever been fully leased either.

Actually the westin garage will be full atomic rose has filled the corner space and rapper 2 chains is opening ESCO in the space in the middle that has been empty for the longest so the garage will be full.

I found out about the "mass shooting" in Memphis via a Facebook post by KFSM TV 5, the local Tenga owned CBS station in NWA. They did not post about Nashville. That is a sister station to WREG. What that did was take the highest viewed local station's social media platform and inform potentially 1 million people about 4 to 5  hours away of that incident.  I see the stupidity every time I come home  on I- 240, there's never not a car going well over a 100 mph and at least half the time I experience at least two cars racing. That's fact, not my opinion.

I have said for years (here and Skyscraper City) that Memphis should have built a new Convention Center/Hotel near Beale St. with a closed or retractable fabric roof stadium in the 50 to 55k range .  Much like BC Place in Vancouver BC Canada.

Lets get something straight the news in Memphis is obsessed with the term mass shooting.  Every shooting that has happened this year has been mass something.  I hate how the news in memphis repeats the negative stories 400 times a day.  Yet i was downtown the next night at sunset jazz in the park which happens every second sunday and there are never any issues, or yoga in the park etc.  Downtown late at night can accumulate large groups of people hanging in the parking lots just listening to music and hanging out and most crazy events stem from those large groups.  The issue is that beale street has about 50 police stationed at any time yet the intersections around beale where younger people that cant enter the street hang have no law enforcement.  Everyone is concerned with Beale when the cops need to spread out to adjacent intersection mainly near the hooters and the flying saucer and main street at peaybody place.

While I do agree that the choice for architecture is head-scratching and not ideal for that riverfront location, it does add another stalled project onto Memphis and their downtown development plate.

Frustrating to see so many potential incredible developments just sit with no movement. Memphis has some really bad luck with development over the years.

Hoping that will change in the next few years, and we see shovels in the ground on this and many other developments in and around downtown.

The project is not stalled the friends of our riverfront group wants then to extend the bluff walkway to connect to the museum 's rooftop park.  The project also is not stalled when you here that a permit was filed that means the project was submitted to code enforcement for review, meaning it will take a few months for the project to actually be approved by code and start construction.  Its deceptive but the project is going to be built its just in code review at the moment.

Access is the missing piece to Mud Island.

This is just my opinion, but I believe the MLGW location would be ideal for more entertainment/retail/hospitality/ residential. It's the puzzle piece that will connect South Main and Beale St. I would like to see another professional theater included in the redevelopment of the MLGW property.

There's no doubt the aquarium is a good idea, and the aquarium at the zoo is showing its age, I hope there are discussions between zoo leaders and the city planners about building a new aquarium and letting the zoo manage it.

You've pointed out something that's often overlooked. The parking around Bass Pro will be a valued asset for whatever is constructed on that property.  I've envisioned a lot for the area around Bass Pro, because the Pyramid is a billion dollar anchor.

The zoo i believe is going to add an aquarium within the zoo on the older side.

    Downtown Airport?

Unless the stars and dignitaries are flying in on Cessna prop planes, I don’t think the Charles Dewitt Spain airport is an option for private jets. Neither is Charles Baker airport. Would have to be MEM, Olive Branch, Millington, or West Memphis.

lots of famous people fly into the downtown airport.

  11. Most of the cities you named are coastal cities tech cities and corporate cities.  Further reinforcing what I'm saying some people don't find cities attractive unless they have certain things in them and corporate jobs brings a different type of retail and development while you may be in the travel industry I'm in architecture and I know what makes people feel attracted to a place. Both nashville, Austin Charlotte Denver and Atlanta used to be smaller cities but all went through a boom of corporate expansion.  Think about it fed ex and st jude host marathons and all sorts of events that bring tourist to Memphis 20,000 etc for the st jude marathon. So corporate presence plays a big role role you can't just deny that I work downtown and see the traffic everyday a who brings it.

Agreed, the Lowes hotel proposal along with the GrandHyatt failure really hurt and needs to be revisited. Also we HAVE TO ADDRESS our CRIME issues. Nobody wants to tour a city where they are afraid to park there car and walk down the street. On a brighter note hopefully Sheraton will continue to move forward on the proposed renovation and JW addition. Would love to see the Edge district continue to grow as a entertainment district along with residential/ culinary options.

Tourism is fine we just dont get the white collar job corporate foot traffic that is why nashville has so many hotels and conventions.  Large corporations bring guests and vendors in and out all the time.  With our abundant warehouse jobs we dont get that benefit.  But leisure tourist Memphis does well, we do need some better larger hotels that would help  too but we have small minded local developers that let 5 million dollars stop a 200 million dollar project.  Crime is crime and is everywhere and until recently it has become more public and brasen not just in Memphis but nationally every police department is dealing with car thefts and these robberies thats why i hate when people try to make this a memphis only problem.  But anyway more corporate businesses and better hotels would help.
