VAI receives 1.3 million grant for cancer research. Nice job.

yes, I take 95 between Ft. Lauderdale and Miami on a daily basis...very nasty.

GVSU threatening eminent domain to take DeVries' building. Buckle up folks...this should be good.
-
I hadn't noticed before the sly slanted facade on the MSU medical school, which complements the more aggressive slant of the VAI.
I agree. What a winning design for the MSU Secchia Center, certainly seems to be commonplace at MSU.

the only article I could find on the new GVSU building...

It's not up yet, but it looks like they are going to put it above the Michigan State University sign. It definately will not be large enough to be seen from I-96. Unless you have a 20X or more zoom camera

Da no credit man,
~John
They could put it to the left where the gray unfinished area is currently. Plenty of room there for a big block S. Then again, they might have just decided to go with the sign that is there currently. Only time will tell... One thing for sure, we can all be glad it's Michigan State in our city and not some other school with a lousy football team.
-
apparently there is going to be a block S sign added to the north side of the secchia center. is it up yet? any info on this?

Another Block S takes to the sky. The Secchia Center is on schedule and on budget to open for staff and faculty in June and for students in August of 2010. The Block S will proudly shine from the north side, 12 stories above the intersection of Division and I-96. We continue our fundraising for the building and are grateful to so many of you who have contributed to this state-of-the-art medical education building for the College of Human Medicine. The support of the physician community and the Grand Rapids community-at-large has made this possible for the medical school. The hard work of East Lansing-based faculty and staff brings this to fruition. -
The city of Miami has a system similar to this one. It works very good for me. It is nice getting a text message telling you that your time is about to expire, and then you can just call back and add more time.
The GR system seems a little different where you have to call back when you are finished. I actually like that better, because in Miami I have to guess how long I need and they charge an additional $.35 "convenience fee" everytime you call to add time.
I think this is a good move.

I'm not sure to what you are referring, but we deal with Medtronic and they seem to be a good company. They do have exposure to the Grand Rapids culture, as they have a cardiovascular unit here in GR.
I don't think I would want the "same old GM" here. But if it were a new GM, that emerges out of this mess with a new brand and focus (as mentioned in the article), it would be a huge boon for Grand Rapids. It sounds like he is just proposing the headquarters move here (now in the Ren Cen), not the massive GM Tech Center in Warren, where most of the product development takes place.
It sort of reminds me of when KMart was looking at moving here.
Didn't Medtronic in GR sell to some other company? I worked there around 2000, but then took another job as it was apparent that the place was going to be sold. They still have a presence in GR other than selling the goods that are made in GR by the new contract manufacturer?

FloridaSpartan, how come you don't call yourself FloridaLaker? (Insert my usual "spartan lover" joke here.)
The Freep ran an article back when school was starting about Detroit kids coming out here to attend GVSU. I don't have the numbers, but apparently there's been some recruiting done in Wayne county...
Did my undergrad at MSU...will always be a Spartan. GVSU is a nice school, but unfortunately not many people have heard of it outside of MI. Maybe they should change the name to Grand Rapids State or something.
-
MSU has lots to offer and excells in many areas. For example, MSU's nuclear physics program is second only to MIT. To compare MSU to GVSU is ridiculous, and that is coming from a person with degrees from both. http://www.msu.edu/thisismsu/points_pride.html

for Spartan Football fans...check out this new building...

GR was featured on ABC or NBC world news tonight last week, can't remember which...about pharmacies not carrying birth control or condoms. They featured Kay Pharmacy and he won't carry either. Saw it down here in Miami.

when is the towers building coming down?

Looks like the University of Michigan Health System is going to partner with Metro Health for radiation oncology services at Metro's cancer center
GR Press: Metro, U-M partnership brings new competition for cancer patients
Also, there's going to be a weekly (Thursday 9am-1pm) farmers' market in the village green portion starting next week.
Did Spectrum drop the ball on this one?

CNN is nothing. It's now in over 10,000 media outlets worldwide:
Just saw the report on Good Morning America from downtown GR.
Too bad I can't join in the celebration re: obama/edwards.

We have a whole foods about a mile from us. We usually only go there for their seafood, meat and prepared meals. They do have excellent lobster bisque as well I just couldn't see myself buying the staples there... milk, eggs, bread, P and J, canned stuff. As our friends from Meijer would say...Why pay more?

they had the MSU Secchia Center groundbreaking today. Go State!
-
muskemi, you work in the field?
-
20% is pretty sad.
Not exactly the sort of national exposure that GR is hoping for, but they are really trying to assist these people.
Hopefully the city and residents can help knock out illiteracy.

anybody know exactly what types of equipment will be in the LHCP?
I don't see a cyberknife or gammaknife in those floor plans. They also didn't add the capability to deliver proton therapy. I think the closest center to get proton treatment is in Indy.
