  1. It's more than a year off, but Siciliano's is planning a big homebrew event for Calder Plaza to coincide with the National Homebrewer's Association convention in 2014.

    http://www.grbj.com/articles/76262-sicilianos-market-secures-downtowns-calder-plaza-for-national-big-brew-event

Saturday, May 4th is this year.  I think the event is actually this year and it was confusing how they mentioned it along with the other event that's next year.

  2. Wish I could remember the old park there, it looks pretty neat. Unfortunately I still don't understand fashion in the 90s.

Guess I'm older than I realize cause I have some fond memories of times spent at the Monroe Center Amphitheater and that brought some back. I like the openness of RPC, but there was something about the old setup...

This was clearly done in the 80's, the era of neon. My brother and I had some awesome neon coordinating shirt/short combos.

  3. I still don't see the market supporting a PF Chang's. I'd hope I'm terribly wrong with this assumption, however, GR rightly or wrongly has a strong conservative image attached to it. Why drive out to the beltline when Szechuan Garden in Eastown can serve two for $20? Is the experience PF Chang's sell worth the extra cash?

I've been to PF Chang's in Omaha and it did not feel upscale at all. It's like the Olive Garden of Asian cuisine (food that is kind of overpriced for what it is). I don't remember exact prices and of course they don't have them on their website (guessing they vary by region) but it didn't seem to me that their prices were too terribly far off from places like Olive Garden, Outback, Carraba's. Those places seem to be doing fine. Drive through any of the sprawl areas on pretty much any given night and most of the restaurants are busy. People eat out all the time now and they aren't going to bat an eye at paying a couple bucks more for something they view as a step up from Applebee's.

  4. I'm starting to think that removing the dam in any portion may not be a good idea. When the Asian Carp start to make their way up the Grand the option of closing off the fish ladder could be a wise idea to save the rest of the river.

According to my quick internet research Asian carp can jump around 8-10 feet so I'm not really sure the dam would slow them down too much.

  5. Went to Cinco de Mayo (Monroe Center) tonight. Good food. Sign on the door says liquor license coming soon. I think the place will be hopping once they get one.

    Joe

We've been there a couple of times and have always had good food and service. I'm not holding my breath much on their liquor license since that same sign has been there since at least March. I know there are a lot of hoops to jump through for that stuff, so hopefully it's still happening.

  6. I had a "hey, what's that?" moment at the Michigan Bicycle Summit on Saturday in Lansing. Gould Engineering was there to showcase some of their bike projects, but also had a display with their other projects. I had no idea that people build private water skiing lakes or at the water ski lake developments exist. I was really surprised to find out that one of the largest in the world (at least that's what the guy told us) is located in Allendale: Placid Waters

  7. Koeze as good as gold.

A write up on Koeze's Cream Nut peanut butter. I can't say that I've ever had it, looks good though

I also did not realize that Grand Rapids is the exclusive provenance of the "Wet Burrito". Who knew?!

I love Koeze peanut butter, but then again I have a family member who works there, so I might be a little biased. Of course the fact that they're selling it world wide has to say something about how much people like it.

  8. I think he's talking about the downtown farmer's market, but I hadn't heard anything about a definitive location yet. Grand Action was supposed to be working on it.

They're still working on it, but they're not saying anything about locations. My impression is that they're not going to announce a location until it's a reality.

  9. I believe there was talk of a pocket park at part of the realignment.

There will be a pocket park. Here's the city report on it: https://www.ci.grand-rapids.mi.us/index.pl?...cument_id=10703

I'm excited for it to be done as it's the easiest bike route from our house to Founders, but I don't like feeling like I'm going to go flying off my bike as I ride over the uneven brick surface. I have no problem with bricks, but that part of the street was out of control.

  10. I stumbled upon The Grand Lady riverboat docking area whilst exploring some trails along the river. No boat, and the ticket booth seemed dark and unused. I had completely forgotten the thing even existed, so I went to the website, and all I see are schedules for October 2008. Did the company fold up over the winter or is the boat still in operation? Without any bicycle trails or buses connecting Grand Haven with Grand Rapids, the idea of using a boat to leisurely get there sounds appealing but I have no idea if it's still in service.

I just googled it and found a couple of different stories about either private cruises or event related cruises happening this spring so it looks like it's still floating.

    Here's one: http://www.mlive.com/news/muskegon/index.s...r_old_fash.html

  11. I haven't seen the metal window guards. I wondered how they were going to secure all that glass.

I saw them this morning on my drive to work. I've been biking lately, which involves a different route, so I had missed them before today. Next time I drive to work I'll try to remember the camera.

  12. The Shop Hop tonight is going to be a great event. I hope to see Planeteer's shop hopping around!

All of us in Uptown are looking forward to seeing you and your friends at the Shop Hop tonight. The event runs from 4-9pm with three trolleys looping the area all night. Trolley rides are free! The tree lighting ceremony will be at 7pm in front of ICCF, 920 Cherry SE.

We had a great time last night and were very happy to see so many other people out enjoying the events. The snow was really beautiful!

What happened with the tree lighting? We walked by around 8 and the tree was there and the lights were on it, but it was not lit.

  13. That looks pretty awesome! Interior shots?

Didn't you look at all of the photos? There was an interior shot. I love the ceiling in there.

I remember hearing this was coming sometime last year and then it never did. I had given up on it actually happening, so I was excited to see that it's open now.

  14. Copied directly from WZZMs comments section. Some people's ignorance amazes me:

I stay away from some areas of GR. I feel sorry for the people who live in these areas who can't afford to get out. Let them continue to kill one another, atleast we won't have to pay for them when they end up in prision.

I was just reading that and amazed as well. It reminded me that I need to stop reading the comments on that site, because as my mom was just telling me earlier today, "you can't fix stupid."
