  1. An old friend of my grandma and grandpa from out of state calls Ann Arbor "Anna Barbara." And, they correct her every time. lol Michi, where exactly is the location of that photo?
  2. You Detroiters have such a funny accent. "Tribblings" lol
  3. Yes, this is a very, very real problem that I don't laugh at, anymore. I used to think it was self-depricating humor. I've found that people aren't using humor, at all. The sky is falling in the minds of too many Michiganders, and it's not necessarily because it actually is, but because we've made it so. Michigan's current economic and social state is just as much a result of reality as it is a negative, self-fulfilling prophecy. I've said it before, but Michiganians have come to love Misery, and she really is good company to those folks, even though they don't realize she's sucking the life right out of them, and thus, the state.
  4. Couple that with the time Detroit really boomed, and their was never any market forces that drove housing towards the rowhouse variety. Duplexes end up being a lot more common as the grade of housing in between single-family homes and apartment buildings, it seems.
  5. Apparently, Wolverine already took him down over that way.
  6. 6th Gen Local, Now, those are the types of views I love to see. I like the non-conventional shots, like these, that show everything stranding behind the riverfront giants, the real core of the city. The riverfront views just don't do the skyline justice like most skyline views on rivers.
  7. I agree with the gist of what you said, though, I'm far more reserved and careful about anointing any other part of the state as a full-fledged success story or economic savior, quite yet. Some other areas of the state have been far more cohesive, and thus, far more successful at setting up fail-safes and far better at manuevering through this troubled economic storm, but I don't feel comfortable saying or predicting that any area of the state is out of the storm, just yet. IMO, the results of some of these manuevers and improvements have yet to be seen. Often times, it takes a sleeping giant a lot more motivation to get going, but when it gets going, it's hard to stop, if you know what I'm talking about.
  8. I've personally never been inside, but have seen photos and news reports done from inside, and you'd never be able to tell how nice it is on the outside by being inside. I wonder if it was a poor renovation or if it was always ugly/plain inside?
  9. I completely agree. But, short of trying to immulate a Vegas or Atlanta, what else could the government possibly do that it hasn't already done? It seems to me that the ball is in the court of the people, and the people don't want to play ball, anymore (in Michigan). I mean, we're practically bending over backwards with all types of tax breaks not just to attract new companies, but even to retain the ones we have. I don't buy much into the school of thought that most of the blame for the state of the economy can be placed on the government. It seems to me that until "we the people" start looking at this state objectively instead of looking at it as Post WW-II Eastern Germany in terms of the economy, the government could completely sell itself out to business (more than it has), and it still wouldn't make a difference.
  10. Sucks I was shooting into the sun, and on a cloudy day, but... Michigan State Capitol Building St. Mary Cathedral, the cathedral church of the Diocese of Lansing, which represents a 15-county area in Southern Michigan. Christ Community Church, formerly the First Baptist Church of Lansing
  11. Just by virtue of being a major regional center, Chicago has found its success from attracting/importing the best and brightest from surrounding states. States like Michigan, on the other hand, are the complete opposite who've found their chances at reviving old school economies greatly diminished since they are such huge exporters (in relation to the few imports) of talent.
  12. To me, without the ornamentation, the top looks completely unfinished. Sometimes, the taking off of decorative cornices and ornamentation doesn't drasticaclly change the look of a building. In this case, it does, and in a bad way.
  13. Not being all that tech savy, I just realized that I probably need to stop posting blog photos. The link to the photo must eat up a lot of bandwidth for blogs.
  14. A cool picture from the book "Detroit's Downtown Movie Palaces" courtesy of the Faded Detroit blog showing what the Fine Arts Building/Adam's Theatre and the Mutual Building used to look like. Man, it's such a shame the ornamentation atop the Mutual Building was scrapped. Now, it just looks ugly: EDIT
  15. Ha ha, very funny. To tell you the truth, I think the Metro Detroit thread is redundant. It'd be different if there was enough photo takers to warrant two seperate threads. I don't think it's Woodward, though, because you can see how the street just abruptly ends. Perhaps, we're looking along Gratiot?
  16. It can be fixed with either putting chopped chicken atop a waffle and putting syrup or gravy on top, or simply seperately (most common) fixing waffles and fried chicken and eating it as part of the same meal. I can't eat anything that heavy in the morning or it makes me sick. In fact, Roscoe's House of Chicken 'n Waffles is a relatively famous resturant chain in Los Angeles, that takes its name from the meal: http://www.roscoeschickenandwaffles.com/ You can find similar restuarants pretty much in any city with a significant black population. Hey, does anyone want to take a guess at where these aerials were taken over Detroit? elneenya2 - http://www.flickr.com/photos/elneenya/ elneenya2 - http://www.flickr.com/photos/elneenya/
  17. Yeah, chicken and waffles is not a Detroit-specific meal. It's a soul food dish.
  18. An old photo of mine... Looking southeast from the St. Mary Cathedral complex:
  19. The same way you post any photo, here, with the image tag.
  20. An old CATA photo on Wikipedia showing one of CATA's articulated/accordian buses:
  21. The full address for the Ford Building is 607-627 Griswold, so 613 is most definitely the Ford Building. The written and main address is 615 Griswold. The Buhl is at 535 Griswold, full address 533-549 Griswold.
  22. Nevermind. Found my answer.
  23. I'm laughing even though I don't have any idea what you meant! lol
  24. That's a perfect black-and-white photo.
