  1. Several pedestrian bridges are needed over Colonial.  If the 408 was not a toll way we could get people off Colonial and set normal stop light timing.  As a runner, it's very annoying to have to wait over 3 minutes for a signal change and this long delay encourages people to make unsafe crossing of Colonial.  The stupid request buttons on the stop lights do nothing to assist pedestrians or make the signals change any faster.  Since I'm on a roll..another annoyance is the sequence of stop lights on Rosalind/Magnolia.  If you catch the light at Anderson heading north, you can make every light only to have it change right before you get to Colonial and wait and wait and wait...  Enough ranting.

  2. Diagon Alley is really cool.  So is the Hogwart's Express train and its two stations.  The stations are really authentic looking.

I went two weeks ago and the train was well done and the projection outside the windows was pretty cool, I am not a big Harry Potter fan but I thought Diagon Alley was just a Medieval shopping mall to buy useless memorabilia.  I did like the free food and drink Universal provided; however.  I was not impressed with the main ride, I really don't see how they are going to get riders through it fast enough...the lines are going to be too long for months to come.  I felt the ride was similar to the Mummy but not as good.  It didn't seem to flow along very well for me ( although it broke half way through) and by wearing 3D glasses all the projections did not seem that sharp and it felt too fake.  I think it will be a let-down.  The butter beer soft serve icecream was good.

  3. To connect to LCS, I see 3 options:  1) use the existing tracks, curve over Robinson, switch the tracks and back up to LCS and drop off the passengers at the LCS sunrail station.  2) Curve the tracks north at Robinson to LCS (but this would stop the Ace Diner Plan and tear down the H2O Church).  3) Near Paramore street diagonal the tracks to Livingston and bring the tracks under I4 in the current Lymmo lane and put another train platform on the South side of LCS.

  4. It is indeed a great location. Convenient access to downtown and beyond.

I don't know if South or Anderson could ever be converted to two way traffic, or have a lane removed...but that certainly would make it a more pedestrian/bike friendly area.

I run from Rosalind on South up and around Lake Underhill and back on Anderson once or twice a week and other than the stretch on South between Bumby and Primrose the sidewalks are pretty good.  There is no need to be on the 408 side of either of these roads.  The only hazards are cars coming from Liberty, Lake and Eola Streets turning right on South Street that only yield and look left before making me a hood ornament.

Driving, I do like the 50mph, um, I mean 35mph speed limit on South Street.

  5. I used Uber to/from the Leann Rimes concert this weekend.  Everyone in our group was impressed with the quick response time, the friendliness of the drivers and how well the app tracking works.  Both drivers refused tips and said they just wanted us to be happy with the service. (I still made them both take $5)  The fares for 2 miles was about $6 and I think in the past I paid Mears about $10 before.  During the free period until 6/20/14, Uber is paying the drivers $15 an hour daytimes and $17 for weekend evenings.  The driver told us after the free period, Uber gives them 80% of the fares collected.  The app that all the drivers have alerts them if they are the closest driver to the client and they have 15 seconds to accept or it gets moved to the next closest driver's queue.  The only changes I'd recommend is that should add the vehicle color along with the driver photo, the vehicle brand and license number they already provide.

  6. These trains are an old idea for FL legislature.  It wasn't a problem until the democratic president wanted to throw money at it.  Then trains were evil.  The hilarious thing is seeing all the OS commenters about face on bashing rail now that RS supports is.

I don't think any is doing an about face on rail.  I think we are bashing the hypocrisy of this man who singularly made a decision to give away over a billion dollars for high speed rail and delayed and almost stopped sunrail until someone make him realize his poll numbers were already low enough.  The most stupid thing is promising the second half of the funding (now coming from state surplus tax dollars) after he is re-elected.  I guess the tea party is over.

  7. Cool, next let's link High Speed Rail from MCO to TPA...  Makes me think, does Rick Scott ever regret making the decision to ax High Speed Rail?  I wonder how much of the HSR stimulus money was to go toward this $215 million state money for the train depot?

  8. On my run this morning I noticed they they have fenced off the office building behind Mama B's near the corner of Orange and Colonial.  Hopefully they soon will begin demolition for the new hotel.  I just wish they could have acquired the corner lot as well.

  9. You can cleary see the demography of the readers of Orlando Sentinel when they have poll.

Deland has more votes than Winter Park....

Based on the way the political surveys go in the paper, I am shocked to see the Villages did not beat out Eustis.

  10. The city did a great job last night with the See Orlando Art Dedication.  All of the sites had the artist present with a "passport" stamp to be collected at each for a drawing.  Each site had entertainment and drinks.  The exhibit at the Cedar of Lebanon had up tents with free bar, appetizers, a table with a woman in a white dress in center and her dress acted as the tablecloth for the baklava.  There were also a few people on stilts dressed in white flowing gowns and tuxedos wandering through the crowd--a real classy way to pay homage to the art and the artists.

After, the city also sponsored an invitation event at 310 Parkside which provided great appetizers which was to cap off a great evening (other than 310 deciding to charge a 22% service charge on all of our drink invoices, which tends to piss me off and I leave less of a tip than I normally would).

  11. "The Union" sculpture on Robinson/Eola was lit last night as well.  It has very intense colored "disco" balls at the top.  I like the sculpture in the daytime, but it seems a bit too bright at night.  "Take Flight" was also washed in a light blue light and looked pretty good except the post on land did not look lighted, so it looked incomplete.

  12. Stop by Kasa last night to look at their menu. I think the price point was good. Not for typical college "bar goers", which is good. With this and Aloft WXYZ lounge, finally something for grown up in downtown. The modern design make it looks very "New York" or Winter Park, they definitely spend some thoughts and money on the design. Not typical downtown Orlando restaurant with some quick fix for quick turnover. Good job.

WXYZ is kind of dead most of time I drive by. People go check it out...

I think I'll check it out tonight for happy hour.  I went to Magnolia Bar (on Magnolia next to Celt) last night before the Solar Bear game to check it out.  It is nicely decorated and they opened up the front with folding doors to the sidewalk.  The owner seems pretty nice, but is having a slow start since they haven't done any advertising and don't have their sign up yet.

  13. Their craft drinks were pretty awesome, especially during happy hour when its half off. Hopefully Mingos kept some of those drinks.

Unfortunately, I think Kassa (former Urban Flats spot) will face the same destiny with their pretentious food and price.

I did have a nice dining experience at Kassa, the food was very good as well as the atmosphere and service, but I think the price point may be a hurdle.  If they can make it until the DPAC opens, I think that would be the type of crowd it would be best suited for.

  14. This is great on many levels

Yes, a great improvement to that corner, but I wish there was a bit more color-- there is too much grey concrete between the sidewalks and building.  At least the awnings are blue.   I do like the pet park area for the residents on the other side of the parking garage area, but I can only imagine how many will still bring their pets to relieve themselves in this area instead.

  15. I ran through Parramore today and they have Church Street ripped up for improvements.  Here is a photo of the Bridge between both sides of Heritage Park

Here is a view of Church Street:

I also ran over to Lake Davis and Summerlin is tore up for sewer work and brick work.  The asphalt has been removed over the bricks from Lake Davis to Briercliff.

  16. Get YELP to sponsor a street fest on Weber with booths for the Ivanhoe Vendors. (Maybe tie it in with the Holiday Wine Walk Virginia St and Ivanhoe have had in the past)  or a 2.5k beer run up the urban trail to highland up to New Hampshire and back through the park along Lake Ivanhoe.  You need people to experience how short that walk really is and how nice the sidewalk and trail are for getting up there.
