Now if they could dredge the river to allow people to bring large boats up from Grand Haven to enjoy the amphitheater and its surrounds, THAT would be game changer!

One of the renderings of the "plaza redo" had a bridge from the plaza to the 2nd level. I thought that was kind of interesting. But agree, I think skywalks kill street level activity.

I’ve heard the skywalks kill street level activity argument since the days of mayor Logie. Personally, I don’t think it’s quite that black and white. I think a factor that kills street level activity is actually often crap weather. Most people enjoy being outside and only choose an alternative like the skywalk if they are avoiding adverse weather conditions or have a specific destination in mind and want to walk there without the hassle of crosswalks, etc.
In this case especially, as an alternative to standing around waiting to cross Fulton while it’s freezing cold, or pouring rain, it would be a nice touch. I really don’t think there would be anyone who would say, “well, I was going to go to the BOB, but since there’s this skywalk over Fulton I think I’ll pass.”

Then this morning I was reading about urban development in other mid-sized cities and I came across a story about Dollar General doing a concept called "DGX," which is their "upmarket" shops in mid-sized downtowns. So I went back and looked at the permit and it says "DGX Grand Rapids," which is exactly how they brand their stores. They are very interesting concepts, and while I don't love Dollar General, I recognize some of that is my own embedded classism and as I think about this retail spot, I think this is actually a decent amenity for downtown. I'm including pics of other DGX stores. Looking forward to this being formally announced.
While I’m not a big Dollar General fan, I do applaud their investment in this much needed retail presence in the heart of the city and I wish them well. It’s unfortunate it isn’t a west Michigan retail organization making this happen. Feels like a missed opportunity.

Great news. Now if someone could find a way to restore the Milwaukee Clipper. It always kind of bums me out when I’m on the Lake Express.

Great looking building. Downtown Holland is impressive. If they could somehow inch closer to Lake Macatawa, that'd be amazing. It's kind of weird to have a lakefront city that isn't very lake friendly.
Joe
Agree. It’s unfortunate they let their lakefront get so industrial. The cost to get Verplank, Brewers, and Padnos to move out then the cleanup of the sites would likely be exorbitant. Kollen Park on the south shore isn’t too far from downtown and is not bad for lakefront viewing (Boatwerks is right there as well).

I saw on LinkedIn that the Grand Rapids Chamber posted images of MDRD and they are much brighter than what is seen earlier in this thread. Can’t say I’m a huge fan of gold trim and the rest of the decor, but perhaps the images don’t do it justice.

I can’t recall the details but a friend once told me about a laundromat that had one washer that was a false front. It always had an out of order sign on it but if you knew the code or whatnot, it would swing open and was an entrance to a speakeasy. Might’ve been in Philly.

We were in there about a month ago and it was abandoned. Not even anyone behind the bar (we could have ransacked the place). It really did look like no one cared (to show up for work).
Here's another image that George Aquino posted. Looks like they opened up an additional third level? And no windowed ceiling?
Both those images make me think there is a tremendous lack of windows considering the location on top of the tower. Who wants to go up there to sit in those dark tones?

If you like banks and dental practices, that stretch of cascade road is for you.

Agree, yes. They are entirely entitled to use parking spaces in parking lots.
I’m sorry to be harsh, but anyone who takes up a whole parking spot with one of these is just being an a-hole.

Resistance to this one makes no sense to me. This proposed development fills a surface parking lot, preserves and renovates another building, adds affordable housing and, while tall, does not overwhelm the streetscape in this area. It adds to the character and fabric of Heartside, IMO. Here's hoping the September meeting brings better news.
Thank you, HPC, for protecting Grand Rapids from the harsh realities of the future.

Not to imply that it’s an easy task, but thanks to this pandemic and who knows what other factors, this project seems to be taking forever.

Personally, I still enjoyed Charley’s Crab, although I didn’t visit that often. It really seemed like an anachronism in today’s downtown - and that was part of its charm.

Beer City Bread, from what I was told, is the next generation of the family taking over the Arnie's restaurants and re-branding. Apparently many Arnie's classic items will come over on their new menus.
I’ve got a bad feeling about this.

I’ve probably just not paid attention, but how long have they used the same brand mark for both organization?

Are you saying that someone going downtown for the purpose of shopping and dining would become enthralled by the allure of the skywalk and would forget what they came to do? Or are you saying that someone using the skywalk to get from a parking garage to the specific destination for which they came downtown, would bypass an interesting store or restaurant (provided they had time to stop) because of the skywalk?
Not that I’m some big advocate for filling the city with skywalks, but they can serve a purpose and the issue shouldn’t be oversimplified. So, putting aside personal opinions on the aesthetics of skywalks (or lack thereof), the practicality of the option (especially for some demographics/ population segments) in this geography shouldn’t be underestimated - regardless of whether or not a person is tough enough to just put on a sweater.
