N&O had an article on this today as well to which Kane is quoted in it as wanting to preserve as much of the current building there as possible, so I'm assuming what is there will somehow be incorporated into the larger building that will be constructed.  There was this nice tidbit as well:

  2. I agree that not moving the HQ may be a short term thing.  When I first read that, my first thought was that is what they are saying NOW, but it seems to me to be setting up for that to happen down the road.  If it does occur, it would be a nice HQ pickup for Raleigh.

  3. RDU now has a flight to the Bahamas. The flight is by a carrier new to RDU, Bahama Air:

    RDU has also launched a new incentives policy that waives landing fees and funds marketing ($250,000 for domestic routes and $500,000 for international), to get airlines to add new routes. Specific flights RDU names are Seattle, LA, SFO, Paris and Frankfurt.

According to an N&O article, Sheetz is planning a big push into NC, with 30 new stores over the next 3 years in NC, in addition to a distribution center, offices and bakery that they want to build somehwhere between the Triad and Triangle and have open by 2014. I'd imagine that any big push push into NC would include Charlotte at some point. They would be nuts to skip over the area.

  5. I'd like to see some of the old buildings converted into a medical museum of sorts. NC, in particular the Triangle, has a rich medical history. We have numerous bio-medical companies here, two scools with a great reputation in pharmacy world, a school with world-wide recognition for its vetinary program and on and on. A musuem would be a great partnerhip opportunity between the various levels of government, the schools, hospitals, and area businesses involved in the medical field.

  6. The Progress-Energy and Duke Energy merger have once again been rejected by Federal Regulators, guaranteeing that it won't get done this year and throwing the whole merger in doubt.     On other news, Martin Marietta has made a hostile bid for Vulcan Materials. According to the CEO, the combined company would be HQ'ed in Raleigh and be the largest in its industry in North America. This would also turn them into another Fortune 500 for Raleigh. Could a downtown HQ be in their future potentially?... :)

  7. Looks like the Red Hat move to downtown could be delayed, given the unexpected snag that the Duke-Progress deal hit with federal regulators. There is the possibility now that the merger could fail all-together, as the government has given Progress and Duke quite a substantial list of issues they must resolve to the government's liking , some of which could effectively wipe out any benefit shareholders of either company would get from the merger. On top of that, they have a mere 60 days to figure it all out and resolve all concerns of the government.

  8. I believe that, much like ERJ170 said, that there needs to be a mixture of apartment sizes, pricing points and locations. Having the right mix is essential for making downtown thrive and grow from where it currently is today, especially so in a time where housing is more difficult to purchase than it has been at any time in recent memory. As far as if this is a permanent or temporary shift, I don't think anybody really knows. I'm thinking that it might eventually settle somewhere in the middle of the extremes.

  9. This isn't about this transit plan per say, but very cool non the less! Kane has launched a study to investigate building a transit system for North HIlls. The transit system would have 4-person passenger cars that would take people to transit stops around North HIlls on-demand. The cars would ride on a fixed rail. Pretty neat idea and solution that could be used to adapt current sprawled areas to be more friendly to mass transit. I can see something like this working well in areas like TTC, where the terrain is different levels and things are spread out a bit.
