  1. Looks like they may resort to tunneling the Durham-Orange light rail thru the ATC corridor:
    https://www.wral.com/tunnel-could-be-solution-to-move-durham-orange-light-rail-project-forward/18065756/

I have to say that I'm impressed at how dedicated everyone is to this project.  They are going as far as throwing it underground in this one area to keep things moving.  Hope it keeps up with the momentum as we head toward a 2020 groundbreaking with this.

""The sale of an aging condo complex next to Cameron Village has fallen through.  The Worthing Companies, an apartment developer, had been trying to buy the 4.9-acre site of the Bellwood Condominiums, but a deal could only be finalized if all 51 owners of the property agreed to sell. One of the owners didn’t agree, Worthing and the homeowners association said, and now the future of a prime redevelopment site next to a bustling retail center is once again up in the air.  The Bellwood Condominium Homeowners Association Board sent an email to owners Nov. 26 breaking the news. “It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that we did not receive 100% sales ratification,” the email states.""

I understand not wanting to sell because of potentially not finding an equivalent nearby, but man would I hate to be that 1 person that didn't sell.  You'll literally have 50 other people breathing down your neck every time you set foot outside your door.

    No thanks.

I live off Creedmoor Rd, and I'm not keen to get a share of the traffic on Six Forks -- especially with the mess at Crabtree Valley Mall, which I doubt will ever get properly fixed. We already know that NC 50 will be four-laned as far north as NC 98, and it's only a matter of time until Granville County sees the kind of building boom that Chatham and Johnston Counties have already seen.

In other words, I don't want the City to do to Six Forks what they did to Hillsborough, forcing traffic onto adjacent parallel streets.

While I agree to an extent, I don't really have the same gripes with Hillsborough Street.  Every street can't be auto-centric and Hillsborough really should cater more toward pedestrians.  It's unfortunate that upgrades to infrastructure can't all happen at once, but I'd rather them do it when they can than not at all.  If anything I feel like Hillsborough Street is rather painless now to get through.  I used to swear a lot more traveling through there before the rework.

Kane has invested millions into the project but the streetscape on Six Forks looks like scheisse.  DOT, Kane, the City couldn't figure out a better way to make the pedestrian crossing more....well, pedestrian friendly?  It's nearly as bad as trying to get from hotels on the north sid e of glenwood to Crabtree.  Kane spent a bunch of money on the decorative columns and lighting, but it's lost in the tangle of overhead wires and telephone poles.   Any plans to "fix" these issues?

I think there's only so much he can do as he doesn't exactly own Six Forks Road.  At one point there was talk of a tunnel between the two North Hills under Six Forks and I even think I remember seeing it on a plan somewhere.  No idea what happened.

I guess this is the right thread for this.  These don't look too bad, certainly not as pathetic as other developments that have been proposed (you know who you are,  Logan and Chamberlain...)

Those are kind of cute.  Looks like "mostly" brick on the outside.

Yes, sorry should have clarified.  1st and 3rd images are the same building and 2nd and 4th are same building.  I haven't really followed this that closely, so I'm not sure when it got changed or who was notified or approved.

Wait what?  Those are the same buildings?  How is this allowed?  The updated ones look cookie cutter crap.

Cary's new Fenton project gets final approvals.  Fenton is going to be very nice with mix of uses and such.   You will love Superica from Chef Ford Fry of Atlanta.  There is a location in Charlotte's Southend and it was muy bueno!

I really despise the sea of parking right at the entrance there.  I wish they'd pulled the Wegmans closer to the street and built a deck behind it that was faces with apartments/hotel/retail.

so I guess Two Glenwood Tower footprint will take out the funky restored Art Deco gas station at corner of Hillsborough and Boylan?  10 years from now, Char-Grill and Snoopy's will be the only damn funky thing left on that whole side of town. (National Art Interiors building is notable and potentially funky, but completely wasted as boring office space and high end retail...

That's truly a shame.  That gas station is awesome.  Character being paved over.

It's like a weird repeat of when neighborhoods/houses got paved over for parking lots for state government.

For historical perspective, they ran Plensa and every interesting idea out of town for F-Street and used Gville, SC as the benchmark - nothing wrong with Gville which is pleasant enough, but it is not the most interesting place in the world.

To be fair though, the Plensa idea had a lot of flaws.  I remember going to a talk given by some downtown Raleigh planners which changed my perspective on it a few years back.  On the surface the Plensa stuff was all nice and shiny and cool.  Digging into it though there were apparently too many problems which made it not cost effective.

The carpenter line is owned by a private rail company ( do not recall which one) and they would very apposed to converting that to light rail.  Light rail and heavy rail (freight) can not use the same track and there is a fairly large separation requirement.  Only option would be to used heavy passenger (Amtrak style cars), like the Charlotte/Raleigh trains, that are much more expensive to build/buy and run.  There would also be a scheduling problem between commuter and freight.  My experience with ridding on mixed commuter/freight in DC area was that the freight companies are not all that concerned with getting out of way of commuter traffic if it caused problem with their freight operations. Better bet would be on line along 54 that us owned by state via NC Railroad Company and has a wider right-of-way. Seems there was a study a few years back and to run lite rail along 54 line would still have issues to separation in some areas.  Would be nice if could get CH to DTD light rail extended through RTI, to RDU, Cary and into DTR on mostly new right-of-way.

I might be mistaken here, but I'm pretty sure that line through Carpenter is CSX owned.  They even show it on their system map:

    Source: https://www.csx.com/index.cfm/customers/maps/csx-system-map/

Unrelated, I also remember reading a while back that CSX is willing to entertain leaving the downtown Apex area should the right offer come along from the town (read as: $$$$$$$$$$$).  CSX has apparently already moved a lot of their switching operations out of town anyways.

    Quote

Apex Mayor Bill Sutton said Lassiter hadn’t briefed him yet on his plans. But Sutton said he agrees that CSX needs to leave downtown, and that Apex could benefit from having another property close to Town Hall.

    Quote

John Dillard, CSX’s director of state government affairs, said Monday in an email that the company is open to the discussion.

“There is a precedent for such a project in North Carolina,” Dillard wrote. He said CSX did a similar project in 2013 by moving a train yard out of downtown Greenville.

Site plans submitted to the City for Clark Avenue Condos, a 5-story, 51-unit development on three parcels bounded by Clark Ave., Enterprise St., and Garden Pl.

I'm glad to see more condo developments in Raleigh, but the elevations included leave me quite unimpressed . . . particularly from the Enterprise St. side.

Heh wow... that takes out two houses on Garden Place.  Although I will admit neither of them are really of any historical/architectural significance.  It' s a decent sized development.

Add this to the corridor of land along the Dix-North Hills 'corridor', which is especially relevant in the Amazon conversation....

He is so savy and has seemed to pull off every single thing he's tried....it almost gives me the gut feeling, that if Kane decides to full throttle try and reel them in, then that's how it'll happen....his full throttle pursuit.

Yeah you've really got to give the man credit.  He has a vision and when he latches onto an idea he just pushes hard to get what he wants done.  It's very admirable and while yes, there are some negatives -- he really spurred changes in this area for helping bridge the suburban/urban divide.  He's driving a lot of development and change downtown as well now.  He also got the "forever stuck" Valentine Commons project going.
