Don't feel like working so will have fun here instead.  Since I like lists, here's mine for the unofficial end of the summer.

    • August ends in a 1 - 2 punch - both surprises for The Hyatt and The General Assembly being presented.
    • Was near VCU School of Allied Health, sorry no photos, too much traffic that day, but it's up to about 7-8 stories already.
    • VCU Gladding Dorms are down to 1 crane.  Building is huge when you're next to it.
    • Monroe Park is well underway, so much ground work going on.
    • VCU ICA looks so close to completion, it's really looking good there - like this shiny chrome composite of geometric shapes, the webcam does not do it justice.
    • Drove right by the old gas station next to the ICA - didn't notice, is the gas station gone?
    • Saw the new bikes for bike share being used - pretty cool - their website https://www.rvabikes.com
    • Waffles - what a great idea, want one now.  https://richmondbizsense.com/2017/07/25/luncheonette-owner-adding-waffles-to-downtown-menu/
    • The Pulse is taking shape in so many locations and has things torn up all along Broad and into Main towards Rocketts.  This is quite an undertaking....
    • Has anyone been by these areas to report on any progress?
      • GRTC bus depot near carytown
      • Westhampton theater was to become a larger development

I left Richmond one month ago today for the mighty DC dollar.  I've been busier than ever at work and hardly get a chance to keep up.

That said, I REALLY APPRECIATE THIS AUGUST RECAP!!!

Thanks for the update.  Hopefully, someone will tackle a list for us next month!

  2. Could my dreams be coming true?

Never in a million years did it seem that downtown Richmond - or any parts of her inner city - would bloom.

Corporate giants are moving back (i.e. Altria, Carnac, and now Capital One) apartments are sprouting in abundance, and abandoned retail spaces are bein renovated.

    Is retail returning?

Spaces es all along Broad, 2nd and 6th - even East Main in Shockoe, seem to be in renovation stages with no clear tenants revealed.

News of new properties along Broad area keep occurring.  Do developers sense something that we haven't yet?  Is retail finally returning?  (hopeful from my shockoe apartment)

  3. Again, hotels in the city's center continue to flourish.

Commonwealth Park, the old Doubletree, and now the Crowne Plaza are all being renovated.

Quirk Hotel, two Marriotts, the two hotels on Main Street...all open up within the year (give or take a few months).

Could this be the end or will we see another major hotel opening sooner rather than later.

  4. This really is a lot of good news ...

a highrise, an area water park, and new development on the Southside...

It is good to see new development in the city.  Heck, the grass needs cutting!

    Thanks for Sharing

  5. my sentiments were posted above.  I live downtown and love living downtown, but much of what downtown has to offer is much too expensive for my daily needs.

I prefer reasonably priced clothing and house wears, and I'd prefer to get them in the city versus going out into the counties.

  6. This was great news to wake up to... I love the height and the design.

And I can concur, the pedestrian activity throughout downtown has increased significantly.  I live near the Marriott's in the Slip and the increased activity from those two hotels alone is very telling.  With the two hotels that have opened in the CBD, I am certain that this will create a new after hours buzz.

I had friends from NC visiting with their two small children this past weekend and they were shocked by the size of the downtown footprint.  We went to Graffiato's on Broad on Friday and were stunned by the First Friday's activity on our work from the Hilton (another testament to the liveliness of downtown RVA.

Now, if we could just sprinkle East Grace with some national retailers... :tw_glasses:

Well I actually moved here from Norfolk, but I am originally from Charlotte.  Interestingly enough,  I used to pass by Richmond all the time on my transit between college and home.  I remember thinking during those years, as I was passing the Dow Chemical and Phillip Morris plants, that Richmond was nothing more than an industrial wasteland.  Then one day in 2013, I decided to actually visit Richmond.  I immediately fell in love with the city, and in 2014 when a job opened up in Richmond, I jumped on it.

I think my favorite thing about Richmond is not just what it is today-although it certainly is a magnificent place-but what it has the potential to be in the future.  I think all this city needs to become the best city of its size in the US is a good region-wide BRT/commuter rail system, more access to intercity rail and HSR, downtown retail, some better sports options, and VCU to move into the top tier of national universities.  If these things happen over, say, the next 20 years, there is no measure to how great Richmond can become.  She already has all the bones of a great city-important institutions  (Federal Reserve, US Circuit Court, State Government), a well-established arts scene, great food/drink scene, wonderful architecture, beautiful green spaces, thriving neighborhoods, etc.

I always thought that the only place I could ever settle down, [re]establish roots, and be happy would be Charlotte, but Richmond challenges that notion everyday.

I never thought I would return to RVA, but I couldn't be any happier.  I lived in Charlotte, too.

Glad you are enjoying our town.

How about this for a counter - Based on new Census estimates, the City's population is estimated to be over 220,000... hasn't been this high since the late 70's / 1980.

Very exciting news.  At this rate, in another decade, we could very well pass Chesapeake and Norfolk in population making us the 2nd largest city in Virginia.

  9. Nice.  I'll bite...

I am excited about Main Street Station.  A little anxious, too, as we still don't know exactly what it will become.

I'm most excited to see the new highrises proposed along the south side of the river.  This and the Dominion tower.

It's a proposal just as much as it is an underutilized lot, but that darn Richmond Coliseum needs to GO.

  10. For its size, Richmond has a ton of shopping malls.

However, several seem to be faltering.  Cloverleaf and Fairfield Commons have closed.  Regency, Virginia Center Commons, and even Stony Point seem to be sluggish.

With both the population and the landscape of retail in the Richmond area shifting, how soon do you think retail will take off downtown?

Many storefronts along Grace Street are renovated with apartments above... shops seem to be the only thing needed.  With the rise in residents and increased hotels (tourists), I seem to think the demand is there.

  11. Yep.  The vote is tonight.  I have a gut feeling that it will pass.

I really wish we were voting for a leg of light rail, though.  I studied in Glasgow, Scotland a decade ago and absolutely loved their Underground.  It is the simplest system - a full circle connecting the inner neighborhoods of town.

It would be neat to have the same, connecting Forest Hill Manchester and points north.

My apologies - I see it now. Hard to keep up with all of the conversations going on with all the activity on the boards in the last week! Not complaining whatsoever - all good news!

I was actually about to post the same thing.  I love all the activity on the board.  I am less envious of the Carolina boards. :):)

  13. Nice.  This puts alot into perspective.  Still though, I like the idea of a hotel.  It would make for livelier restaurants and encourage more boat rides along the canal.

I've read reviews on TripAdvisor and the lack of dining and easier access seem to be the biggest complaints about the canal walk.

And again, the obvious increase in activity around the two Marriotts make then an exciting addition to our neighborhood.
