  1. one thing that always confuses me about restaurant reviews. When the reviewer goes to the restaurant, i assume they don't announce themselves. But bringing in a photographer, doesn't that give away the surprise? or did Dana just go back a second time with the restaurants knowledge to take pictures?
  2. i just saw the article on TD regarding Uncle Julio's RIO GRANDE CAFE. I really liked that place. The price was a little high for a mexican restaurant where 2 can easily dine during dinner for under 15 bucks whereas, 2 for Rio would be 25? I especially enjoyed their margaritas with the patron. I hope they bring in something we don't have here. maybe a macaroni grill.
  3. Burt, you are correct... i haven't had time to go by DD33 but Michele Stuchell at Richmond.com wrote up a review of DD33... DD33 Review When East Meets West Our restaurant critic tried the West End's new Dd33, which boasts Asian-influenced New American cuisine. Michele Stuchell Richmond.com Thursday, January 18, 2007 Unashamedly, I love Asian food. The aromas of garlic, ginger and soy highlighting succulent seafood, tender meats and crisp vegetables make me salivate every time. The hardest decision for me to make is which Asian cuisine am I in the mood for and which place to try? Chinese? Thai? Vietnamese? Korean? Naturally, I was dying to try Dd33, the newest addition to Richmond's Asian restaurant scene. Featuring what they call "Asian-influenced New American cuisine," owners David and Dick Du have created a very chi chi restaurant in the very suburban Shoppes at Twin Oaks in the far west end near Cox and Broad Streets. The Dus are no novices when it comes to Richmond restaurants. Father Dick is a partner in three Pizzeria Unos and is the owner of the several Peking restaurants throughout the region. Son David was trained at Johnson & Wales in Providence, Rhode Island and has restaurant experience from New York, Connecticut and, of course, his Richmond home. Dd33's contemporary d
  4. oh, my bad. the location is two or three shops down from SUMO SAN in the Bottom. Across from the Farmer's Market. Yes, DD33 will eventually be on my to do list. i'm planning on leaving for a long vacation in a few days. Maybe someone here will be able to go before me and write the review? come on!!! someone take the plunge for the team!! BTW, i pass by the place all the time after work, and today, i was pleasantly surprised that the entire shopping center was packed with cars. hopeully equally split between ipanema grill and DD33.
  5. haha.... woops.. i didn't mean take a bulldozer and run it down broad st. thought certain parts, it would be beneficial. back on topic. has anyone heard of Pearl Restaurant Lounge & Martini Bar I just saw it when i went downtown saturday. Looks like another bar/dance club that will be around for 3-4 months and close up.
  6. all the restaurants coming to richmond has been something we all have been waiting for. The only thing that needs cleaning up is... the city itself. it's great that we have such a selection of restaurants to go to, but what about other stuff? maybe this is the wrong forum for it, but i think they need to clean up DT richmond, mainly broad st and really turn it around. bulldoze the boarded up buildings, change the outdated faces, and maybe, maybe richmond will rise up again to be a top notch city.
  7. tims, timberlands, are boots? but they look nice i guess. maybe they are trying to keep out certain people who wear tims? i don't know. I do agree, regarding bank and the flow of people traffic. with the bar filled, it is extremely hard to move on either side, so i am glad they are going to have a separate entrance to Vault, otherwise, that place is going to be a fire hazard. Maybe it will be somewhat like how tobacco co has the main entrance and the club entrance. I am surprised that the girls hanging at Big Daddy's don't have some sort of safety harness. one slip of the wrist and they will fall 20 ft... ouch..
  8. I was with a few friends who wanted to go to the vault, but the line outside was crazy. Not only that, but people were actually dressed to impress. I wonder if something big was going on? Much too late for homecoming, dressed really well, sort of formalish? On that note, I wonder what your take on this would be. The same group of friends wanted to go to Big Daddy's for one of our friend's VCU graduation party. She had a private room reserved there. Upon arriving, one of our friend for turned away at the door because he had Timberlands. When did Richmond start caring about the dress code?
  9. I went to the Texas De Brazil and that place is awesome. as far as meat, i think they are much better than Inpanema Grill. Down in Maimi, it was $50 a person but their non meat section was double what inpanema has to offer. I wonder what they will be charging here.
  10. sad... i liked going to the julian's...
  11. I have to agree, hardshell does have good seafood. well, just one particular dish, the pasta dish, i think it was udon noodles with all the seafood inside? that is just plain yummy. Crab Louie's is indeed a drive. i have to admit, bonefish is pretty good for a chain.
  12. i remember back in the early 90's when Sonic opened up in chesterfield by Huguenot and i think Robious? I went with a bunch of friends and we all got sick... I found that review regarding Bluepoint to be right on the money. The decor is really nice, compared to the drab that occupied seasons. the food, was not all that tasty. I wish Richmond could have a really fine seafood restaurant. I been looking high and low and haven't found one to my liking.
  13. hey guys, sorry about not getting back. The holiday was a killer and didn't have time to go. i think i will be going this weekend, maybe before. got to check out my schedule. or, maybe i should just wait for the Style review before i venture out.....
  14. planning on going to DD33 this evening with a party... i will come back and write a detail report.... this is my first ever restaurant review.. i hope i cover everything... and don't look too suspicious jotting things down...
  15. Croaker's spot? i have heard of it.. never tried it. i think restaurant.com had some 50% off deal... maybe give it a shot....
  16. From my understanding, the Berkeley is 5 stars, but that is for the hotel, not the restaurant. Speaking of Bojangles, i surely do miss them. Every chance i can, i would buy the sweet tea and chicken/dirty rice whenever i run into a Bojangles. The nearest one is down in the hampton roads area. You can't believe the many times i have driven down just to have it. I wonder why they closed? and, who wants to join me in opening it back up in the Richmond area????
  17. I wasn't sure if the one at Riverside was still open... If the rent was too high for short pump, how do the other retailers deal with it? i can't see grapevine, or even ritz camera doing as well as McAllister's.... i loved their salad and baked potatoes..
  18. i have been living in the west end for 20 some years now, and heard about urban planet a while ago looking up information regarding rocketts landing and other developments DT when the local news didn't provide any additional info. I didn't see this thread on eating until just now and decided to register and give some input. I drove by DD33 saturday and the parking lot was full. Now i don't know if it was because of Ipanema grill or wild noodles. actually, i know it wasn't from Wild Noodles. that place sucks and i am extremely surprised that it hasn't closed. I do have one question, and i don't know if it was answered or asked previously, but what happened to McAllister's in the Short Pump Shopping Center? they looked like they were doing extremely well, and all of a sudden, doors were closed, and that was the end of it? Does anyone know?
  19. i am new here, and i saw someone write a review on Comfort. So here is my input. Comfort is by far my newest favorite restaurant. awesome food, good bang for the buck and nice crowd. Always good to see people just chilling and relaxing. Parking is sometimes hard to find, or, easy, but you might want to hurry to the destination, otherwise, you would start feeling like someone is going to mug you... But i do have one comment, and it isn't really about Comfort, more on this thread. At this point, i have to go to page 63 to leave a comment. Who really has the time to read all 63 pages to see what people thing about a certain restaurant. wouldn't it be easier if a subsection was created just for restaurants and each restaurant will have it's own review? that way, we can see what everyone has said about one restaurant instead of reading the latest news. I certainly wouldn't want to try a restaurant if someone on page 20 already said it was terrible and another person verified it on page 30, but it was lost in all the other banter regarding other establishments. just my new $.02 BTW... HELLO EVERYONE...
