  1. Regarding today's Metro Business article, would encourage you to pick up the print version if able, much more content.

    flack4ric

I scanned through the article this morning to see if they mentioned your twitter activity, flack4ric, but I didn't see anything about it. Shame on them!

I didn't have the time to read through it thoroughly, but I'll sit down with it tonight.

  2. Nope, you're wrong on that Nathan. Not to say the Biograph didn't run some pretty far-out films, but it was never a porn grind house.

However, a block west, The circa 1930's Lee Theatre morphed from second-run movies to art cinema in the 1950's/60's and finally went XXX before being purchased by VCU. The University did a neat renovation including enlarging the stage and it is now known as The Grace Street Theatre. It is used frequently for dance concerts.

IPANEMA, by the way, is a fun vegetarian restaurant across the street from The Grace Street Theatre. So next you go to a dance program, IPANEMA and EDO'S SQUID (around the corner on Harrison Street) are good nearby dining options.

Aahh, gotcha -- thanks for clearing that up!

  3. Almost directly across Grace Street is the former HYPERLINK restaurant/bar/club -- still open but under a new name. It was built as The Biograph Theater in the 1960's but was shuttered for a long time before being converted. The Biograph showed interesting artsy movies rarely seen on other local screens.

That's an interesting way to say that it was a XXX theater, burt.... Or am I getting it mixed up with another spot on Grace? I know there was a XXX theater on that part of Grace about 15-20 years ago, but I could have sworn it was the Biograph.

  4. Thanks, Nathan for the info on RUCHEE EXPRESS at 1201 West Main. The word "Express" might lead some to think it is struictly a take-out version of RUCHEE UNIQUE INDIAN CUISINE on Midlothian Tpk. Is it large enough for indoor dining?

There are only about 15 seats, so it is primarily take out.

crashvt03: Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that I read in the paper this morning that KONA GRILL is opening either today or tomorrow.

  5. Richmond's Indian restaurants can't equal those in London or along East 6th Street in Manhattan's East Village, but RUCHEE UNIQUE INDIAN CUISINE is attracting considerable praise from the local press.

Tess Autrey Bosher adds her approval in the current Style Weekly.

Look for an expansion soon in The Fan near VCU.

    RUCHEE UNIQUE INDIAN CUISINE

9930 Midlothian Tpk in Midlothian Green Shopping Center

    tel. 804/323-5999

    Website: http://www.rucheeuniqueindiancuisine.com

Smoke-free, but it appears in the "view gallery" of the above website that nipping is permitted :)

RUCHEE EXPRESS is the location you're referring to in the Fan. The address is 1201 West Main Street, where FAT LARRY'S STEAKS & HOAGIES was. They opened last week.

I just got off of the phone with the owner a few minutes ago just to check in. I sold FAT LARRY'S to them about two months ago. (meaning that I brokered the deal)

I'm glad to hear they are getting such good press, especially with the opening of their new location!

  6. nhughes (Nathan), what can you tell us about RENDEZVOUS on West Broad between Foushee and Adams Streets? It reportedly is going to be a sleek new club. Any news about when (or if) it will open?

Also, what is the status of the building at the corner of Walnut Alley and 18th Street in Shockoe Bottom? There seemed to be some renovation going on when I was in Richmond early July.

Nope, I haven't heard anything. In fact, I don't know that I've ever heard anything about it other than from this forum -- maybe a blurb in Style at some point...

  7. I think what used to be known as TONIC on 18th Street was one of his (Big Daddy's) properties, and the planned but unfullfilled DUELLING PIANOS in what is now SHEEBA was also under his wing. Also, I thought the place on the corner of 18th and Main which has a wooden patio was his.

He was a nice guy. I liked him, but have forgotten his name.

Who owns and operates After 6 and 321 Supper Club? And what type of clientele are they attracting?

Good memory, burt! The restaurant/club at 16 N 18th St was BPM, and he has pulled out of there. I manage the building, so I'm working on finding a replacement and preferably someone to buy the property, not just to move in as a tenant.

I don't know who owns/operates 3-2-1 SUPPER CLUB, but it's not the same owner as AFTER 6.

I don't think I should get into revealing too many details since I have been in the middle of a lot of it. As a few of the other posters on here know, it's a fine line sometimes when you're involved as to what qualifies as "too much" information -- not that anything is secret, just that you need to be able to afford your clients and customers a certain level of confidentiality.

  8. Hi, Nathan. Nice to see you again.

You guys have me totally confused! So, the former urban club After 6 is now 3-2-1 Supper Club and Big Daddy's is now known as After 6? Is old Big Daddy's now known as After 6 going after the urban crowd? Are ladies swinging from the ceiling as in days of old?

Exactly, but I'm not sure what happened to the winches (the machinery, not "wenches" :silly: ) that they were using for the aerial displays. They may be using them in the new setup, or maybe they are just sitting there in case they want to use them at some point.

    To summarize:

    old ---> new

    AFTER 6 ---> 3-2-1 SUPPER CLUB

    BIG DADDY'S ---> AFTER 6

  9. What is BIG DADDY'S new name?

I thought AFTER 6 had always been the name of 3-2-1 SUPPER CLUB.

I hope these clubs have taken a clue from the alley cleaner-uppers and are spiffing up their rear entries on Walnut Alley.

Actually, AFTER 6 is the name of the establishment that occupied 3-2-1 SUPPER CLUB's space prior to the current owners taking over. The owner of AFTER 6 left around the time of the flood, and is now reopened in place of BIG DADDY'S.

  10. Easy there, buddy.... No need to get defensive. Reread my comment -- and come to think of it, no one said anything about "stealing".

Besides, Charlotte wants Monroe and Richmond wants to keep him. It sounds like it's good all around that there's a candidate worth both cities getting all googly-eyed over. :)

Then again...maybe you're not being as defensive as I read into your comment. That's the drawback to text -- the context of a comment is easy to misunderstand.

  11. Well, first of all, Charlotte isn't trying to "recontruct" Richmond and we're not out to steal anything...

  12. The article says that he is a finalist for the postion in Charlotte. There are other finalist as well.

If he goes, first Charlotte takes Sovreign Bank and now Chief Monroe.

It's a shame that the Braves aren't moving there, too....then we could just say they are trying to reconstruct Richmond down there.

  13. I got to take a peek inside Sheba, the new Ethiopian restaurant opening on 17th Street in Shockoe Bottom. I have to say the place looks great and sooo much better than it did when it was Wildcats. The guy that was working on the place that let us take a quick look thinks it will be open in the matter of a week or two. Can't wait to try out the food!

Also in Bottom news, there's a new Thai restaurant on 17th. Haven't had a chance to sample it yet though we did look at the menu. None of the regular menu items were over $10 so if you're looking for a deal that seems to be a good spot to try.

Anyone have word on the Papa Ningo expansion? I looked inside there a while back and it seemed to be progressing well but haven't heard any news.

I believe the name of the Thai restaurant is ALEX'S THAI. I have a couple of co-workers that live very close by and they've eaten there a few times already. They've been raving about the food.

I don't have any word on PAPA NINGO's expansion, but I'll check the next time I talk with the owner.

Good to hear that SHEBA is coming along. I hope it's another great addition to the 17th Street restaurant corridor! :)

  14. From the Style Weekly website: "Style Weekly restaurant critic Brandon Fox talks food with radio host Doc Thompson on WRVA 1140-AM. Tune into the show for more on our State of the Plate Thursday, March 20, at 4 p.m."

I'm not sure I'll be able to tune in, but I'm going to try. I thought the Richmond restaurant enthusiasts here may be interested, too. ;)

  15. If too much copper in your diet wasn't a bad thing, I would have suggested breaking out the marshmallows and making smores over the roasting crook.

Friggin' metal thieves. I hope that the one that stole my old beat-up camper shell from beside my garage, cut himself so bad on the torn metal that he bled to death. I hate a thief.

Funny, that's the same thing I was thinking when I read the article in the paper. I was hoping it might stop some of these thefts.

I've heard of a multi-unit building where someone broke into an access panel and stole the pipes out of the walls, leaving the water pouring out.

  16. Secondly, I ate brunch at Cafe Gutenberg this morning/afternoon. I love that place and it is relatively close to my apartment. I asked the server what the deal was with the closing and all (there is a for sale sign on the exterior). She said that things are kind of up in the air right now, and they will know for sure by tomorrow afternoon whether or not they are going to close and if so, when they will close. She said that they are probably going to close, but that it wouldn't be until the 24th of February or so. I wish it would stick around - it is one of the most unique places in Richmond and I will miss it dearly.

    - VPD

Thanks for the insight, VPDcurt! We went down to CAFE GUTENBERG on Saturday night for dessert after eating for the first time at SETTE (which was amazing, btw!). We had heard from one of the servers that she was losing her job, so we thought we would get a visit in before it shuts down. Being in the business of restaurant brokering, I hear a lot of rumors and couldn't be sure if this was just an another rumor from an over-reaction to the "For Sale" sign on the building.

I also hope that if they do leave, that someone takes the reigns and keeps it going. I know a lot of people that would be sorely disappointed in the loss, and Shockoe Bottom doesn't need to lose such a respected establishment.

  17. Speaking of Shockoe Bottom, the meeting regarding the Dowtown Master Plan and how it affects Shockoe Bottom and Shockoe Slip is being held at Main Street Station tonight from 6pm-8pm.

If anyone else is planning to be there, let me know and be sure to say hello at the meeting.

  18. Hiya, journie.

Judging from this inRich story, John Marshall developers may have a lot more to worry about than miscreants like you marring their historic building by parking in front of it.

    http://www.inrich.com/cva/ric/news.apx.-co...02-01-0182.html

Nathaniel Dance, who I think is the son of a former Petersburg mayor, also owned or operated BOSS on Harrison Street. Is it still open?

Yep, the BOSS is still open and doing well from what I hear.

"...defile it with parking." ---- That's great.

  19. Nat, there used to be a club called The Cha Cha Palace on Broad just east of EMPIRE. I think it attracted a very diverse clientele and later moved to a former bank building on Main street in The Uptown area. The club is now history.

I wonder what the address was of that...or more to the point, what is in the location now. There was a club just west of Laurel and Broad called IVORY'S that was open when I was seeing shows at THE METRO (now EMPIRE). I think it has been abandoned since then, and I don't know what it was before IVORY'S.

  20. nhughes... this is kind of your niche... do you have any insight?

Loads and loads of insight. What's the specific question? :fun:

There are plenty of rumors surrounding any store closing. If there is a padlock and a "no trespassing" sign, then that usually means that the tenant was locked out due to non-payment or some other default. If there is just a For Lease sign in the window, then it could be they were locked out or it could be that the tenant left voluntarily, either because the lease ended or they negotiated a termination with the landlord.

I don't have any specific news about ACAPELLA, but I saw a flyer for the sale of CAFE GUTENBERG (looked like it was business and property for sale) and they had the name right there on the flyer -- so not even a hint that confidentiality was an issue. It's sounds as though CAFE GUTENBERG has decided to close down for any number of reasons and sell the whole kit and kaboodle.
