  1. Oh, and I went to KUBA KUBA yesterday, as well. Delicious as usual. I tried one of the specials off the menu, medium rare tuna topped with tropical fruit w/ beans, rice, and asparagus. It was all fantabulous, although the beans and rice were't exceptionally flavorful. The empanadillas (sp?) were delicious as ususal, both meat and veggie, the black bean soup rocked the house, the tostones kicked buttocks, and then some.

On a few negative points, the waitress was selectively rude sometimes (impatient), and the gazpacho's flavor was too acidic for most people at the table... but it was taken off the bill.

And of course, the meal ended with tres leche cake, both vanilla and chocolate. If anyone has a sweet tooth, and has never tried the Tres Leche Cake at KUBA KUBA, then you haven't lived. We also tried some pineapple upside down cake, which was decent, but paled in comparison to the tres leche.

  2. A few more to consider: MAMA 'ZU; EDO'S SQUID; SIX BURNER; and one of my favorites, THE TRACK in Carytown.

McLaw, I'm not sure WHITE DOG is still open since Barry has put the place up for sale, but it is one of my favorite Fan spots -- intimate, but also smoky.

What's with VAULT at the bottom of BANK, McLaw? Is it still in the planning stages?

And do you know anything about a new spot called SKYY BAR & JAZZ PALACE at #4 West Broad across from TARRANT's?

burt, I visited The White Dog two days ago, and it's still open and not even close to being sold apparently. Barry Pruitt is trying to sell the entire building for 750,000 or so. Even if the restaurant alone is sold, I was told that it more than likely would remain in operation.

  3. Well, I don't think it has actually closed yet. I inferred from the story that Barry is looking for someone to buy the spot.

And Dogwood didn't close, either. It just changed ownership. Or, at least that's the way I read it. You went to sleep too soon, Aaron. Go out and celebrate your birthday tonight and have a good time. :yahoo:

I guess I did sleep too soon. I even had friends who offered to treat me to Mamma Zu, but I was asleep when they called. <_<

  4. From the new-ish Brick, which I think is affiliated with inRich, there's a sad story about the imminent end of WHITE DOG in The Fan: It tells of Barry Pruitt's restaurant career in Richmond, though a stint as operator of AVENUE 805 is omitted. As Barry says, white dog namesake Max can barely get up off the floor and it's not so easy for his master, either.

I'll miss WHITE DOG without Barry and Rosalind.

The following link may or may not work. If not, and you're still interested, go directly to the site.

No *BLEEP*ing way!!! What is it with it and Fan restaurants closing their doors this week? Highly acclaimed Fan restaurants at that. I had only been to The White Dog, but it always held a place in my heart since I tried it... and it held a place in my pocket, too. I'll always sport my White Dog handkerchief to pay tribute.

  5. And just after nice comments from Food & Wine Magazine as well as good reports by bugsy and others.

Perhaps new ownership does not mean kitchen changes.

On this note, I was actually planning on going to this restaurant yesterday (my birthday). THis news is disheartening and ruined my plans. After work, I spent my entire birthday asleep.

Maybe calling in the Orkin man would have been a step toward financial security. Scaring off the roaches might have appealed to bugged out regulars and attracted new concert-goers as well. :)

See, the interesting thing is that, nobody really cared about the cleanliness. Several nights a week, the venue was packed to the brim with its regulars seeing shows. The Raygun wasn't going downhill in terms of anything noticable when it closed its doors, and that surprised everybody.

  6. It might have had great punk rock but I have heard that Nanci Raygun was a pretty gross place from a standpoint of cleanliness. Did anyone ever really eat there?

I did look into Hyperlink one day and it looked pretty dismal as well. Don't the people who run these places have any interest in amenities?

I explicitly remember sitting against the wall at a show at the Nanci Raygun, and just relaxing there... me and about 30 cockroaches. It was pretty gross, but it could churn out some decent vegan food. It was pretty much a hipster hangout like many West Grace places, but the priority seemed to just be in staying financially aloft instead of amenities.

  7. With CAPITAL ALE HOUSE MUSIC HALL's capacity of 250; CANAL CLUB with tops of 700; ALLEY KATZ at 400 to 500; TOADS with 1400 and the upcoming NAT holding 1500, I would say downtown Richmond's music scene is about at the saturation point.

And in addition to the above there are places like MCCORMICKS on 18th Street; HAVE A NICE DAY in the old Flood Zone (capacity 700); TIKI BOB's just up 18th; POE's PUB at the foot of Church Hill; THE CAMEL in 1600 block of West Broad; whatever is now in the former Cafein's and the COTTON CLUB. And oh! let's not forget BIG DADDIES on Main in The Bottom and the upcoming Dueling Pianos bar on 17th, plus RICHBRAU; TOBACCO COMPANY CLUB, and SINE in The Slip; BLACKFINN at ROTJ -- well the list just goes on and on.

Unfortuantely, there is still nothing nearly as great as the Nanci Raygun was for the music community. The Hyperlink Cafe, Gallery 5, and house shows have tried to help fill this niche in the scene, but with nowhere near the success. It's such a shame. It's been 10 months since it shut its doors, and has no signs of reopening... not even with a new name.

  8. In recent dining news on the Aaron front, I had Mamma Zu food three times this week. Had the rockfish on friday night, and it was the first time I"ve ever finished an entire meal there. Also tried their zuppa di pesce and veal marsala. Both delicious. Saturday I order two red and two white pizzas. Delicious huh?

Well today I went to the Crossroads Coffeehouse with a friend, and I saw that one of their house coffees was.... Mamma Zu blend (?!)... their darkest roast. WHat the heck?

Does anyone else's life oddly revolve around the Richmond dining scene in a strange, latent way?

  9. Wow. Unbelievable. The Richmond music scene just lost another artist to bad circumstances. Ben Hutson, his girlfriend Cayce, and his friend Joe all lost their lives in a fatal car accident while on tour yesterday.

I wasn't incredibly close to them, but I did hang out with Ben from time to time... last saw him at the Inquisition Reunion Show May 19th. A friend called me last night to inform me of their passing, and I woke up thinking it was merely a bad dream. It's so unbelievably disheartening. :(

  10. Aaron, did you see my lead about the tea room at the former World Cup on Morris Street? I least I think its the former World Cup. Interested in your comments.

Oh, yeah, I saw the article, burt,... it' seems pretty odd that they would state that they want to directly compete with the classic Richmond five-diamond tea room at The Jefferson!

But, remember, the old World Cup is now Crossroads Coffee which actually just had its grand opening Wednesday or Thursday. It didn't seem to be in full-service though

On a side note, tonight I 'dined' at the vegan hipster classic, Panda Veg, on West Grace Street. I've been there MANY times before and am fairly aware of its declining and inconsistent quality of the food.... but tonight was inexcusably HORRIBLE. I've honestly NOT had a meal this crappy in ages. We asked for extra spicy 'mock orange chicken'... something I've thoroughly enjoyed in the past. It came completely unspicy, and the mock meat was tougher than frozen beef jerky. I would have loved to have sent it back to the kitchen, but I doubt that it would hvae mattered considering that Panda Veg has declined to a decrepit state since they know they'll always get business from college kids and "hipsters" anyway. I mean, the 'orange' sauce probably consists of ketchup and a mixture of artificial flavorings.

Should have walked a few paces on the next block and gone to Edo's Squid.

  11. A Jackson Ward movie?! A movie movie? Not an educational thing for the schools?

"Aaron is a young cop walking a thin moral tightrope. He spends his days patrolling the streets of his small southern town." WHAT?!

Haha Marc John Jefferies... the PeoplePC kid. He just had a birthday recently.

We need more movies actually set in Richmond than us being DC or some other place.

And I'll add the unofficially named (by me) Tredegar Beach.

Oh yeah, sorry. I forgot to tell you guys about my autobiographical film I'm working on. :shades:

Where exactly are Tredegar and Texas "Beach"es?

  12. I guess that sounds pretty 'chic.' I'm glad to see that their demographic isn't 30+, but I don't like how they seem to pretentious insult Richmond for self-promotion (on the infusion website).

Also, in that same Short Order article of Style, I was curious as to what was meant by:

"And after a slight dust-up over a recent article, it

  13. I'm certainly glad to see the weekly ratings that Style Weekly gives Richmond be very positive in the past weeks.

On another note, I'm tired of being called 'BP'.... you guys can just call me 'Aaron' (my genuine first name) from now on.

  14. Oh my lord, you're speaking my language. The Tres Leche Cake at Kuba Kuba is like crack. I'll order one piece and want more and more. We found out you can buy whole cakes in advance and had one made as our groom's cake at our wedding. Heaven. I think it's the owner's family recipe or something. Either way, it's my favorite.

Yeah, I found out that the chef's mom apparently makes all the desserts herself.

It's insanely coincidental that you should mention Kuba Kuba wedding cake thing, because the night before last, I had a dream where I was planning a wedding reception for a friend of mine. In the dream, I called Kuba Kuba and had them make a customized layered Tres Leche Cake!

You know you're addicted when you're having dreams about it! Was the groom's cake at your wedding layered or just like the regular whole cake?

  15. Ma Musu's is unfortunately the only of the restaurants you listed that I have tried. It was pretty decent though... buffet style where you pay by the weight.

Quick question for anyone though: Why is the Tres Leche Cake at Kuba Kuba so ridiculously good??!?!?!?!? ANyone else a huge fan? I often go there just to get a slice in a carryout box!
