  1. I think USAir has already made its decision to go with Charlotte over Pittsburgh as far as air traffic is concerned. Don't you think it makes sense to have a southern and northern hub as opposed to two mid-Atlantic hubs? I don't know the details behind an operations facility that USAir is trying to get cities to compete for, but PIT is trying for it desperately. Hopefully, none of those cities will put all their "eggs in that basket" given the airline's shaky history.

Even after the America West merger, it is a regional airline with financial problems, and time will tell if it provides a service that the public wants. Personally, I don't see it as a growth strategy. However, it should help having the western "footprint".

  2. No one knows except RTA, and they'll release the information as soon as it becomes available. Its generally thought the next line will either be to Hendersonville-Gallatin or Smyrna-Murfreesboro.

If 640 riders a day are riding the Lebanon line, I'd expect it to be larger for these other routes. Lebanon is a small town of barely 15,000 residents, Mt Juliet has maybe 25,000 these days.

Murfreesboro alone has approx. 80,000 residents and Hendersonville is approx. 50,000 according to the latest estimates. Add on the other bedroom communities like Gallatin, Madison, LaVergne, Smyrna, Antioch and these other communities have such a higher population that its kind of funny they didn't persue the larger areas first.

Hendersonville even has a plan to build a little downtown shopping area if I'm not mistaking around their commuter rail stop, should it happen.

Providence is being built in Mt. Juliet, but even that community is a few blocks south of the actual stop on the rail line.

The Murfreesboro route makes a lot of sense, but so would the Hendersonville/Gallatin route.

BTW: You are correct about the Hendersonville town center. It is already well underway on both sides of the CSX line. Currently, there are two lifestyle centers under construction, a Rave 16 screen theatre like the one in Chattanooga (the best one I've ever been to by the way)...

    From the above link:

Indian Lake Village, the 265-acre development by Halo Properties LLC, situated at the intersection of S.R. 386 (Vietnam Veterans) and the recently completed Indian Lake Boulevard, unanimously won its final round of approvals last week from Hendersonville Board of Mayor and Alderman. Touted by many as the new

  3. I'm not a defender of Hammons by any stretch, but he did put up a fairly attractive hotel in Richardson, TX (albeit a boxy design just the same). It is part of their civic center with arena complex at Galatyn Park. And it's on the Northern Dart line. Anyway, I mention this b/c the city of Richardson forced him to adhere to strict guidelines for the building. Hopefully, Murfreesboro will be at least partly as firm with their requirements. Sounds like somebody there at least knows how ugly that roof would be.

  4. Does anybody know all the projects that are going in at Ridley and I-24 in Smyrna? I know of two multiplex theaters (Roxy and Malco). I know where Roxy is going, but not Malco... where? What else?

Also, any updates on discussions to link Ridley to Cool Springs?

  5. I guess all the traffic from Nashville to Vegas is continuing to build. I can't believe how many people fly out of the "Buckle of the Bible Belt" to "Sin City"! The half dozen times I've flown to Vegas, I went out of BNA on SWA. The plane was always friggin packed. Also, I continue to be impressed by the sheer numbers of O&D traffic out of BNA... very busy place for a non-hub. The folks in charge should be commended.

ALso, Lexy, I wouldn't have thought that a thread on the airport would have had much life to it. But you (and others) have made it a personal favorite of mine. Apparently, others are interested too. Thanks.

  6. If there was anything that was happening to the point where sales weren't going as well, or everything going very bad for Tony G, why has the tower been increased in height 5 more stories.

If things were going that bad for him why increase the height and the cost of this project.

Because it costs nothing to "increase" the number of floors right now. And it gets more press as something "positive".

Sorry, guys, but someone's got to be the skeptic. However, I do have great hopes for this. Call me the hopeful skeptic (or just call me Oxy Moron).

So what was this meeting today???

  7. I agree that this article isn't a good sign. But TG has bucked the odds in the past. If anyone can build something this "pie in the sky" then it's he. He has proven his mettle in sales. This is a monster though.

I think everyone should just take a wait and see approach. If he doesn't get this one out of the ground, he will always try something else. You guys know that!

  8. Obviously, this building is still speculation. Until the steel rises from the ground, it will remain so. I agree with Metro about the demand for anything like this anywhere in the South outside of Atlanta. Still, I want to see this thing get built b/c I do happen to like the design. Overall, I think it would be a real positive for Nashville's DT, which has seen so much of its livelihood (in the form of businesses) flee to Williamson.

As far as the skeptics go, I would be much more skeptical about this building if Tony hadn't already zoomed ahead with Viridian and Encore. Plus, I read just yesterday that the Nashville housing market is still very strong (one of three in the country showing rises in y/o/y sales and prices). In addition, I think Nashville is unique among cities in the South for continued strenght in DT housing. There's something very intangible, but just as important as any huge project that might go DT. Of course, I'm referring to the riverfront. At this point, the city has only just begun to utilize the river. As such, the city seems to recognize that residential is the greatest hope for DT's revival.

No doubt, this project is still very iffy, and for reasons stated above it has become a greater gamble as its size has grown. Here's to hoping it becomes reality.

  9. AA has a large presence at BNA? I haven't noticed. But then again, I never fly them. However I have been down that concourse a number of times when I've flown SWA to Birmingham and Orlando and other Florida cities. I'd fly SWA more if I could. They're a huge thing for BNA, especially their flights to Florida cities. I'm going to fly them from BNA to Vegas next spring.

I think it's a bit disappointing that Tennessee's congressional delegation has done next to nothing to get the Wright Amendment overturned. Richard Shelby got that done successfully a few years ago for Birmingham. It will expire now in about (how many??? 7-8 years), but in the meantime all those SWA flights will have to go through other cities from BNA. Repealing Wright would have been a really effective way to "stick a finger in AA's eye" after they pulled out of BNA. But I get the sense that Tennessee's senators are absolutely ineffective.
