  1. That sounds exciting. I am looking forward to finding out what this will be.

It's Elton John. Before some of you guys say it's not a big show, it is a big step for Greenville. John is not doing many U.S. dates this year. so its a good thing he chose here

  2. John Boyanski should do a very good article on this BRT development. Future BRT bridge picture taken earlier today by me. This is on the same side of Woodruff Road as Saturn is. The other side of the bridge still looks the same as several months ago with just pilings in the ground: Picture427.jpg

actually, we did a biz cover on this subject back in January. The other big part of this is the airport is right there. helps serves a major connector...

  3. That is interesting. Why put such a large sign out there when people will hardly (if at all) notice the actual construction? Oh well. Perhaps we will eventually be reading a TBA blurb about new development happening on that vacant Broad Street lot. :shades:

Vacant Broad Street site? Are we talking about that large swath of land on the southern side of Church Street bridge, across Broad from Northhampton Wines? Funny you ask, I talked to someone about that land this week. Apparently, the owners are sitting on it until they find the right project. You have to admit, it has to be one of the best open sites in all of downtown. All that acreage with nothing on it. I can see housing there...

And to make it transit related, maybe if housing goes there it will lead to a shuttle loop system downtown where people in surrounding neighborhoods can take shuttle/trolleys to downtown instead of driving.

  4. I just want to give a shoutout to the Northgate Soda Shop. Its just a great local restaurant. Its not the best food in the world, but its just good home cookin' -and I mean "...cookin'... " This is definately one of Gville's hidden treasures. Plus they serve Coke floats, and who doesn't like that?

This may be a topic for another thread, but I always wondered what are some of Greenville's better hidden treasures? I mean the places that no one would go to if they didn't live nearby, but everyone really needs to go to at one time or another.

    My faves would be:

    The original Clock in Greer

Tucker's Soda Shop ( this is similar to Northgate, but over in West Greenville)

    Tanner's Big Orange

Little Italy ( this is a pizza place in Piedmont, that is really worth the drive)

  5. Some reliable news here....

Just on the phone with a friend.....we were talking about the Cytec announcement. That morphed into CU/ICAR, as apparently carbon fiber research is not limited to aerospace, but also going on within the auto industry. I found that interesting. The possible connections.

What I found really interesting though was that apparently a couple of announcements should be hitting soon about additions to ICAR. Quality additions.

There are some good projects brewing in Greenville....enough to keep us chatting for a while! :D

Carbon fiber is very big in the Formula One industry.

  6. This sounds similar to the proposal for the corner of River Street and South Main, next door (where the vacant old "green monster" sits). I should try to get over and have a look as well. Sounds fantastic! :shades:

it is pretty cool looking. Has some kind of parking garage attached.

  7. I'm excited as this is a much larger number than I had heard, but also let down, as I knew about this. I thought it was something new. Anyway, excellent news! Significant number of jobs in a high tech industry.:thumbsup::thumbsup:

See previous post from December in the new jobs thread.

That is to funny that you beat everyone to this months ago. Does that count as UP effect?

  8. Has anyone heard anything about the former Winn-Dixie warehouse on Wade Hampton? I was really hoping someone would buy it, rip it down, and put somethng nice there.

But within the last week, they have re-sealed the pavement and painted all of the concrete foundations. What's the deal? It seems odd that they would spend the time or money on a crappy old building unless they were planning on something else moving in...which would be a shame. Just tear the eyesore down and start over!

It was sold to a company in California during the late summer. That company has a history of taking former industrial sites and converting into retail/residential. That is there plan.

  9. Yes, they do kind of contradict one another. I am inclined to believe that both are right, even though both emphasize a different element.

The more I talk to people, and the less they say, it seems to me at least...it has to be a company that is moving in from somewhere else and it is likely one of the industries the state Commerce Department/ GADC has set as a target such as aviation, automotive, advanced materials, plastics etc...which of course means it could be any company out there right now.

  10. I have no idea what is going on here. Who could it be?

Just to make sure I'm clear:

-It is a company that already has a presence here, but not necessarily a headquarters here

-It is industrial (are we sure about this)?

-It required cooperation between several entities to make this happen

-This will be big news...big enough to have a press conference/banquet with the Governor present

Also, it is definitely in the county, and is a publicly-traded company

  11. only to leave though. I would not say that them staying and continuing their operations is worth the Governor's time. If it's them then they must be expanding, but why would that require cooperation among different entities in Greenville County? This is very perplexing.

I'm going to stick with the inprobable light-rail announcement. Maybe a COMPANY is sponsoring the EXPANSION of mass transit for naming rights  . The South Financial Rail Transit Authority. They'd never run out of funding, haha ;)

I was thinking it might be Lockheed as well. And no, I have no further knowledge on this than anyone else. It is just a strange hunch. They would need a lot of cooperation between entities for expansion because they are in the Donaldson Center, which would require city and county council blessing. Have the meeting downtown to throw people off a little.

My off the wall idea, though, would be BMW is being annexed by Greenville County...

  12. Eden's signs said they were re-opening. That's a bummer that they're closing. I agree - I took a walk along North Main on Saturday and was floored by how many vacant store fronts there were. I had at least taken solace in the fact that Eden said they were going to re-open and now that's even gone. All the pedestrian traffic is heading to the West End.

Last time I talked to Eden's, they said they were moving to a new spot, but weren't sure where. They hope to stay downtown.

Also, as per Carolina Chocolates, they have plans to move things around in there. Pretty soon, you will be able to watch them dip the chocolate as you enter. That to me ( a recovering chocoholic) will become a destination store just to watch the chocolates made in front of you.

  13. I didn't see that episode. Did they build the rails too close to one another in the curve in Springfield due to a shopping mall, too? :whistling:

Now, I have the "monorail" song stuck in my head from that episode..."what about us braindead slobs? You'll be given cushy jobs."

Rt, congrats on Florida winning the national championship.

  14. There are a lot of vacant stores downtown these days, but its just a transitional thing I think. Not every business can be successful... what is that statistic on how many businesses fail each year? I think that is why Greenville needs to see a national retailer invest in Main St. That will really solidify the market there, and act as an "anchor" of sorts, which will give more psychological comfort (less percieved risk) to investors.

It seems like a lot of places are going out of business right now, but its because there hasn't been a lot of closings in awhile. Normal ebb and flow of business transitions Main Street, and for some reason a lot of businesses are going down at one time. It wouldn't be noticed if it was one store every month, but right now it is about six.

This happens about every five years.
