  1. Duke lost to Miami, FL last night!

Another big game that not many people know about is South Alabama vs. Western Kentucky tonight in Bowling Green, Ky. South Alabama is 21-5 (13-2) and WKU is 21-5 (13-1). South won the first meeting in Mobile earlier this year and they will likely meet again for the Sun Belt championship which happens to be in Mobile, AL in March.

  2. Clemson had a really good class this year, it wasn't top ten, but it was top 15 I think.

I think Pryor is going to Ohio State. He was all set to sign with them on NSD, but decided to wait at the last minute.

Speaking of Clemson, it will be very interesting to see Clemson and Alabama meet in the Georgia Dome to open the season.

  3. Big 1 vs 2 matchup this week with in-state Memphis taking on Tennesee. This is the only real game left on the schedule in which Memphis could lose. It should be a good game.

I've been looking forward to this game for months. I think this UT team is our best team in the nation. I'll be shocked to see Memphis win this one.

  4. According to that presentation, the eastern interchange of the proposed West Mobile Bypass and I-65 will apparently be constructed in Chickasawbouge Park. :(

It also calls for the destruction of downtown buildings in order to resolve the current entry problems to the Wallace tunnel, thus increasing the impact of the downtown interchange. I wish we could dissolve that interchange and tunnel altogether.

  5. Yeah, it really is. I just hope there will be more. I hope that developers will build onto saltaire to continue that new urbansim feel. I'm so happy that all of the waterfront will be open to the public!!

That's some solid planning right there. Anyone know what firm designed this project?

  6. That's interesting about Baumhower. I was walking toward Government Plaza about this time 2 years ago when I saw him and his friends walking out of that building, seems like this is an idea he has had for quite some time now.

  7. The Mobile Arts & Sports Association, parent organization of the Senior Bowl, bought a 3-story downtown building that will be renovated to provide a location for the Mobile Sports Hall of Fame Museum. The museum will occupy the ground floor of the c. 1890s building at the southwest corner of Dauphin and St. Emanuel streets.

  8. I'm actually in favor of an open park in this location. I am STRONGLY in favor of added residential in downtown Mobile, and encourage developers at any given opportunity to develop residential downtown, but in this location I feel a Mardi Gras themed park would be invaluable in the future. Redevelopment of downtown is imminent, and there are plenty of blighted properties that the city doesn't own that can be developed for condo use. The development of a condo would benefit Mobile greatly in the short term and possibly further spur downtown redevelopment, but 20-25 years from now when we see 10's of thousands of residents downtown and land to develop scarce, open space will be at a premium. Plus, this location is right along parade route A and would be the location for many civic events such as Mardi Gras, Bayfest concerts, and other events that would benefit the city as a whole. I believe the Civic center location would be much more fitting for a condo redevelopment rather than this central downtown location.

  9. personally I wish they would just tear orange grove down and sell the property to a developer that would do something worthy of it. Like the Savannah river landing project. It would be a great opportunity to expand and revitalize the downtown area to the north.
  10. I hope the Civic Center property gets redeveloped and transformed with an urban, pedestrian-friendly mixed-use project of some kind. If some of the old street grid can be restored, even better. I was appalled to read that the RSA project director in Mobile once mentioned turning the Civic Center into a lifestyle center, a mall of all things. Some people just don't get urban development.
  11. City offers land swap for controversial courthouse property

Mobile Mayor Sam Jones made a surprising offer to the county commission to swap more valuable downtown civic center land (21.5 acres) for the old courthouse property (2.7 acres) that the county wants to develop into a mixed-use condo project. The mayor is serious about building the Mardis Gras Park on the vacant county property.

The proposal would include tearing down the existing Mobile Civic Center complex, and then building a new arena, theater, and parking deck; with a mixed-use condo development on the huge surface parking lot.

Two of the three county commissioners said they would be willing to discuss the deal.

  12. The condo project would be more fitting for downtown Mobile. There are plenty of vacant and blighted areas that a park can be built, this area is in dire need of a mixed-use residential high rise. Sam Jones campaigned on bringing green space to downtown Mobile so it will be interesting to see how this progresses.
