  1. Birmingham International set a new record for passenger traffic in a year.

Over the course of 2007, approximately 3,222,689 passengers came through Birmingham International Airport. That bests the old record (set in 2005) by about 100,000.

    Keep it growing!

This is great news and should leave no doubt that renovation, upgrade and expansion of the terminal is needed.

Are there any projections for passenger activity at the airport over the next 10 years?

  2. Once again Bettye Fine Collins is playing her usual mind games and reneging on support of the BJCC expansion. Her claim for reneging is IF the Jeffco occupation tax is repealed by the Legislature. To add more insult, Jim Carns is saying he is against it all after remaining neutral up until now.

Minds changing on deal for arena

It sounds like once again The Three Stooges are playing their partisan politics over this thing all over again. Langford is right, those clowns are jokes and play entirely too much with the voters of Jeffco on progress involving this project.

I hope those 3 idiots know that people are going vote their sorry asses out of office come 2010. They have completely played themselves out and they better believe there will be hell to pay for it too. Birmingham is wasting too much time on this mess involving the Jeffco Commission.

I believe there are powerful persons in this city and county that are determined for the city of Birmingham to fail. Why? Just look at the racial make-up of the county commission and the city commission. I believe that racism is alive and well and these people want to bring the city of Birmingham to its knees.

When has Jeffco ever been as uncooperative with issues that involve Hoover, Homewood or Vestavia Hills? I believe if the City of Hoover could muster up the same level of financial support for a dome the Jeffco commission would approach it with an totally different attitude. What is really sad is the city government and the mayor are clueless.

I for one am sick of this nonsense. Something needs to be done and I wish the people of Jeffco and Birmingham would wise up and come together for the good of the entire area.

  3. I was in Manhattan last week for business. It was my first time visiting the Big Apple and I must say I was impressed. I was a bit apprehensive coming there on my own but it ended up being a great time. I can't wait to go back!! And you New Yorkers are quite a pleasant bunch despite the stereotypes!!

My wife and I visited New York last month for the first time. We stayed at Times Square and had a wonderful time. The city is magnificent and the people were friendly and helpful.

Now I better understand why I see so many 'I Love NY' bumper stickers and tee shirts. New York isn't just a city it is a national treasure.

  4. A billion-dollar baby in economic impact

Here's something to make you smile Blazer85, Birmingham International Airport celebrates its 75th birthday. The airport now counts at least 3 million passengers annually, the first time since 9/11, in 2005. It is also being posed to be grow even more with the expension of the longest runway and terminal renovation/improvements.

I have a feeling BIA will be serving more than 5 million passengers annually before the end of this decade.

I have noticed that BHM has not update their passenger statistics since March. Does anyone know why?

  5. Majority fault latest BJCC plan

Once again another set back for the BJCC expansion. Gene Hallman, Jack Fields, and those other lead heads on the BJCC board are still trying to get that damn dome built. The thing is now going to cost $624 million to build, but they are still trying to do studying to spend at least $185 million to buy land needed for an expansion, street infrastructure, engineering and project management for a dome.

When are they going to realize that we don't need a dome, but an improved BJCC arena, exhibition halls, more hotels, and an entertainment district? I will be writing a long letter to Mr. Hallman this week myself to tell him otherwise. I am getting really sick of those idiots trying to avoid Plan B and just shove a dome down out throats.

I guess I am an idiot but 40 years ago the 'intelligent' people were saying Birmingham doesn't need a civic center. But now, where would this city be without the BJCC?

This city desperately needs an improved civic center, an entertainment district, more hotels and a dome. I have to wonder if people here realize how far behind we really are. This is not only about entertainment for the city, it is about a commitment to the future to attract interest from prospective business and employers that want to locate in a progressive city.

  6. Yeah... I read that the other day. I cant wait until the runway expansion and new concourse is built. Then maybe Birmingham will start having a handful more international flights.

I read that 161 million has been budgeted for the terminal expansion. Sounds like a significant expansion. Does anyone know what is planned relative to the expansion?

  7. Not quite sure what the $5M is for... I would think mostly interior fixes. New paint, carpet, etc. Structurally, the building is fine to my knowledge, so it would be mostly aesthetic type things on the inside I would think.

As for UAB, that's right... GO BLAZERS!! Finally getting some recognition, too, with a Top 25 ranking.

It will definately retain its name and image but the improvements will make the hotel better than ever.

The exterior of the building will remain untouched except for paint and some exterior lighting upgrades, which will actually better reflect the age of the hotel.

The first floor will remain unchanged except of some renovations at the front desk area.

Floors 2 through 7 will get new finishes, paint, wallpaper, carpet and the corridors will get new lighting.

The 8th floor was never finished out from the 1986 renovation. The floor is to be completely finished with a breakfast dining area, excercise room and 14 new suites.

  8. A few new proposals:

    - A 6-story $25M hotel has been proposed for the Southside off 20th Street.

    - A 16-story $125M mixed-use project has been proposed for Southside off 20th Street.

Is the 6 story hotel to replace old motor hotel south of University?

Do you know which block on 20th street the 16 story mixed use will be built and its schedule?

  9. Tutwiler + Hampton Inn??

Someone please tell me that this article is incorrect. I can't possibly see the Tutwiler becoming a Hapmpton Inn....I just can't. Article from the Sun Herald

Is this some kind of sick joke?

It is very true. But it will continue to be the Tutwiler Hotel and will be better than ever. The eighth floor will be finished out to include corporate suites and a breakfast dining area. The other guest room floors will get new finishes and hallway lighting.
