I've always thought of NYC's bridges (or at least those linking to Manhattan) to be like ancient drawbridges crossing a moat into a castled city. Especially how the bridges from the NJ side over to NY offer tolls - as an honour to their superior city. Well, OK, there's only one bridge from NJ to Manhattan, Staten Island isn't quite so cityish.
