  1. hahaha -- my name was one of the "words" listed on the quote cloud! (if *everyone's* name pops up on the quote cloud, i'll be embarrassed thinking this was a "special" occurance)
  2. Hey Dave9, Also an incoming intern -- I'm starting categorical medicine. I spent a good bit of time driving around on the east side, looking at places listed on craigslist, at least from the outside. I agree with what others have said that for $1400 you'll have no problem finding a very comfortable place. I can't remember if you're looking for a 1 or 2 BR, but even for a 2 BR that's within the range for the east side. I think that once you come back in June you'll be able to find a place to rent. I found driving around the city very helpful in terms of figuring out where I imagined I'd have everything I wanted (and therefore likely *not* to want to move because I'm tired of moving!) I would add to your considerations whether you want to live around many undergraduates or not. I found some of the areas in fox point to be a little heavily populated by undergrads/early grad students -- apartments seemed slightly more run down, and in one apartment I visisted, the neighbors upstairs were blaring loud music with the windows open. I decided I was looking for more quiet environs -- a clear sign that I'm getting old! I don't know if you've looked at the Brown off-campus listings, but that's where I found my apartment. I also saw a 1 BR on Moses Brown St listed that seemed really promising -- right in wayland square, and equidistant (basically) to RIH and Miriam. I didn't end up looking at it because I ended up signing a lease for another apartment before I saw the Moses Brown one. So I concur that providence.craigslist.org and the brown off-campus listings are your best bet. Also, I definitely would recommend air conditioning. I know from many years of experience that it can get really gross at night (and day) during the summer. I guess it's an individual thing, but like Dan (above), I just can't sleep if I'm too hot. I'm rarely a miserable person, rarely in a bad mood, but being too hot while trying to sleep is the best way to make me very unhappy! PM me or email me (if you are also medicine and have access to the email addresses of the people in the intern class) if you have any comments/questions you'd like to share "off air." Take care, Priscilla
  3. Sorry for the terribly boring question, but I couldn't find what I was looking for using the "search" option. What are the utility companies in Providence that I'll need to contact? Are there choices? Is one better than the other in the categories? I know that, for example, there is cox v. verizon. In terms of communications, I need high-speed internet +/-- phone service. (Better for me NOT to have cable!! )
  4. Those are some great pictures. It was fun seeing all of the pictures inside the mall because I've never been in, but I'm sure I will be in the future! I too liked the picture taken from the garage with the masonic temple and the state capital building. Again, from perusing these photos, I noticed the masonic temple (under construction) as I was coming into Providence on this last visit -- I believe it was on 95 south just before I was going to get off at exit 22. By the way, I don't relish trying to explain to my poor directionally-challenged mother how to get off 95 and get over to the east side: "Ok, Mom. Get off at exit 22. Exit 22 actually has three options, 22A, 22B and 23C..." this is where I'll lose her! She'll end up in Ithaca or something. She never once managed to drive to New Haven while I was in college without getting lost at least once, and certainly her trips from suburban Boston to Philadelphia have not been good -- the last time she drove down, it took her 9.5 hours (without traffic). Needless to say, she hasn't visited me too much!
  5. It may have been that "elusive to well-lit photography" street that pot au feu is on. Or some little street like that in downcity -- it was narrow and very reminiscent of old boston streets -- I wasn't expecting it. But moments like those are wonderful when you pay attention to the feeling you've just witnessed/been part of something beautiful. I did definitely recognize the fleur de lis house from your picture, garris!
  6. I don't It was my first time driving through downcity during daylight, and I was just trying actually to get over to the east side (I was a little lost ). I'll have to investigate again and report back.
  7. This has been such a fabulous thread to have for someone new moving to Providence! It has been fun stopping by Providence on apartment hunting missions and seeing buildings that are now familiar to me after looking at these photos. I saw the Fleur de Lis (I think that's the name) house today, and smiled. Driving through the downcity area, I came around a bend that almost took my breath away -- my first thought was that I wished I had a camera and could then contribute to the Providence photo thread! Soon enough.
  8. I finally found an apartment -- I'm thrilled with it. I agree that it's important to drive around Providence to figure out what's important to you. I'm the kind of person that needs to live near some shops/places that people hang out so that I don't feel too isolated. I personally decided I wanted to live in Wayland Square because Fox Point felt a little too post-collegiate to me, and the area near Hope and Rochambeau was a close second, but I though I might end up hanging out more in Wayland Sq. I also like the proximity to Wickendon and to the Brown campus, etc. I don't know about realtors -- I think that oftentimes rents are slightly higher if you find an apartment through a realtor (even if you aren't paying some "finder's fee"). The best thing to do is to look through craigslist a lot and look at the pictures and drive around to look at places, at least from the outside. I think you'll get a sense of what the prices generally are for the different setups (one BR, two BR) and different areas and when the rent is crazy, and when it's a steal. I still shake my head at some people trying to rent out a 1-2 BR for >$2000/month. That's just doesn't make any sense! Anyway, if you have time to get a feel for PVD, that'd be a great way to go. I don't know much about Federal Hill and places that some people here live and love -- I do want to check out those areas soon to hang out in -- but I decided that I wanted to live close to a Whole Foods! (At least while it's still open!!)
  9. Depends on how you and the missus earned the name "Stink"!
  10. Just wanted to say hello to everyone and thanks for all of your "insider" thoughts -- I'm moving to Providence in the next few months to start up my residency at Brown, and am really excited about living here. And a special "shout out" to Garris -- I saw your posts on the Yale Bookstore and that you were in Trumbull. I'm a Jonathan Edwards '98 girl myself. I'm still apartment hunting, but I can't wait to settle in and to do some exploring.
