The Baton Rouge Speech and Hearing Foundation on Wednesday launched the public phase of a capital campaign to raise $7 million for a new, larger facility that will increase access to its therapies for more children and adults with communications disorders.  Plans are to relocate the center from its long-time home at 535 W. Roosevelt Ave. to the LSU Innovation Park on GSRI Road, said Executive Director Melissa Juneau, who also announced a name change for the facility. It will be known as The Emerge Center for Communication, Behavior and Development, she said, noting the center will slowly transition to this new name as it continues its capital campaign over the next two years.  Juneau said the center’s goal is to break ground in the fall and move into the new facility in 2014. At approximately 26,000-square feet, she said the new facility will more than double the current center’s size, enabling it to triple the number of children and families it can serve.

The rendering looks nice! This place will always have a special place in my heart...being friends of the Deaf(who went there) most of my life & now as an Interpreter for the Hearing-Impaired...they greatly benefited from these services.

Emerge Center tax credits to go toward upgrades

The Baton Rouge Speech & Hearing Foundation got approval from the East Baton Rouge Redevelopment Authority on Thursday to receive federal tax credits to help fund its $8.1 million center at the LSU Innovation Park in the Gardere area.

The Emerge Center for Communication, Behavior & Development will double the capacity of the foundation, which provides an early-intervention program for children with autism, group and individual speech and language therapy and hearing aids and testing for children. Melissa Juneau, the foundation’s executive director, said the 26,000-square-foot facility on 3.2 acres it will lease from LSU also will provide room to grow if necessary. And if the center’s past is any indication, that could certainly be the case.

Groundbreaking set for new Baton Rouge Speech & Hearing Foundation facility

The Baton Rouge Speech & Hearing Foundation says it has completed a financing deal on the $8.1 million in New Market Tax Credits it's receiving from the East Baton Rouge Redevelopment Authority for a new 26,000-square-foot facility called The Emerge Center for Communication, Behavior & Development. A groundbreaking ceremony for the project, which will be located on 3.2 acres at the LSU Innovation Park in the Gardere area, is set for Jan. 25. The center is expected to open in mid-2014. Chase Bank served as the tax credit investor. "This New Markets Tax Credit financing ensures The Emerge Center will become a reality," says foundation Executive Director Melissa Juneau. The center, which will double the space the foundation currently has at an existing center on West Roosevelt Street, is being designed by Coleman Partners Architects and will be built by Faulk & Meek General Contractors. The foundation has reportedly raised $3.4 million for the project through a fundraising campaign, and also has a $2.7 million line of credit from IberiaBank. "In The Emerge Center, we will be able to significantly increase access to our services for children and families who desperately need our care," Juneau says. "Our vision is to become a regional center of excellence that will provide autism, speech and behavioral therapies to children and audiology services for all ages."

Land acquisition for LSU South Campus expansion completed

 

The transfer of property from the LSU Property Foundation to the flagship university for the expansion of the South Campus has been completed. According to records filed with the East Baton Rouge Clerk of Court on Tuesday, the LSU Board of Supervisors bought the remaining 20 acres fronting Nicholson Drive for slightly more than $2 million from the foundation.

The foundation handles all of the university's property transactions, LSU Media Relations Director Ernie Ballard says. It buys property first, then is reimbursed by the LSU board later.

LSU does not initially buy property outright because it needs approval from the state Legislature, Ballard says, and that process is handicapped when lawmakers are not in session. As an entity that's completely separate from LSU, the foundation can buy property and recoup costs afterward.

"The foundation can buy the property and serve as the bank for us," Ballard says.

The university is using $2 million from the state and $25,084 in private funds from the LSU Foundation to pay for the new tract. The new acreage is in addition to a bit less than 79 acres LSU has purchased from the foundation since 2011, completing a roughly 99-acre expansion that has been in the works since 2005.

Ballard says the 20.05-acre tract is currently undeveloped. According to the South Campus Master Plan, the new land will be used for classroom, lab and research buildings, as well as a Traditional Neighborhood District. Building design will mimic the architecture at the main campus. Part of the South Campus' mission is to expand the university's research capabilities. —Kelly Connelly

LSU incubator at Innovation Park picks up four new companies for 2016

Four new tenants operating in the water filtration and energy sectors are joining the Louisiana Business & Technology Center incubator at LSU’s Innovation Park this year.

The new tenants are Aquaculture Systems Technologies, Lighting Choice, Power Engineering and LED Supply Plus.

It would have been nice to see LSU Innovation park integrated into a more urban setting with the Water Campus

Three new companies join LSU Innovation Park business incubator

The latest tenants are McLean, Virginia-based Cognosante, Baton Rouge’s Lubricity Labs and Louisiana Multifunctional Materials Group.

Once again...over a year later... It would have been nice to see LSU Innovation park integrated into a more urban setting with the Water Campus.
