There is space they own immediately behind the building. I would think it is about 1/4 the depth of the current building.

I know one of the ideas being passed around is the expansion would fill part of the MCC Hotel...

there's plenty of vacant land south of the current location and the MCC...if they want to create a "5th avenue entertainment corridor", maybe put it south and have some ideas for infill to make it a real tourist draw...

plus it would stimulate growth through the whole area...

From what I have read and heard on TV, there may may some sort of public private venture which means they could be part of the MCC hotel footprint. Purcell mentioned the 5th Ave corridor, so I am thinking behind on the vacant lot behind and maybe more. The plan is to I think double the size. If it is behind the property in the rear at least the ugly side of the building will look better.

I know the logistics of my following proposal might not work, but what about finishing the, still virgin, auditorium in The Sommet Center? This space is such a waste of a great resource that it makes me ill. I know it is on the opposite corner from the HofF, but maybe it could be used.

Maybe not, but surely we can find something to do with that space.

I agree for public consumption it is a waste of space, but I do believe that currently it is rented quite a bit for rehearsal of tours. I think the building is doing a great job of creating revenue from that space and unless it becomes a small concert hall, I do not see it being used for anything else publicly.

I swear we have discussed this somewhere on UP or NC.. like a few months ago.. but I can't find the thread.

Anyway.. I thought the CMHOF already had quite a bit of expansion space available inside the current building? And these plans for expansion have always been on the drawing board.. for a future date at some point.. but I may be wrong.

I just remember when I heard the news on TV and radio this week, I thought.. the news agencies are so far behind in reporting.. heh.

The Sommet Center's dirty, ugly white behemoth of a sign on Broadway needs to be destroyed. Something larger, less late-1980's, and with a large LCD screen needs to be added.

^^^agreed that the Sommet is one of the better arena's in the land. We are lucky to have it located downtown. Many other cities place their sports complexes way out on the edge of town, and then try to make it feel urban by including some shopping and entertainment around it(as well as a huge parking lot). These all feel very fake. It's nice to have the arena in the city. It could use some updates like new flat screen's in the concourse's and such, but the Preds need a deep playoff run or two to facilitate such a change. I think their days of asking for financial help are at an end.

Sooner or later, Nashville needs to face the fact that building these huge buildings with 3 blank sides is a toxin to the human environment. They all should include street level retail or business to interact with pedestrians.

Back on topic, I think it's fantastic that the HOF is planning to expand(and a shame that i've never been). This has been a great addition to our tourist economy for the past decade. I also think it is a somewhat attractive building in it's own way. Anything that reduces the amount of surface parking in SoBro is fine by me. I just hope the design the building in a pedestrian oriented way.
