Southern Conference Baseball Tourney

We all know that the folks in Charleston think that Charleston is the only City in SC and nothing worthwhile happens in the State outside Charleston. They were really PO'd when the SoCon moved the baseball tourney from Charleston. They said it was a big mistake and would not be supported in Greenville. Word has it that the tourney outdrew last year's tourney in Charleston by about 3,000 peeps.

Speak for yourself. Charleston is a great city to host such events, albeit more expensive for traveling fans. They have plenty of reason to be proud of their city, while I am proud of our city for its effort. Greenville seems to have done well as a SoCon baseball tournament host city, as expected. Here's to many more college baseball tournaments in the future!

A lot of the players, coaches, parents, and fans were staying at the Hyatt so we had a lot of them coming through Liquid Highway. I overheard a lot of great compliments on Fluor Field, from players and everyone else!

Random bit of information: NCAA athletes are not allowed to have ginseng, as it is a performance enhancer. I thought that was ridiculous!

I heard good comments on both the city and on Fluor Field, from those in for the tournament. Can you imagine if the original proposal by the Braves to build a new ballpark at The Point had gone through????? How wrong that would have been!

I would assume that the SoCon Tournament rotates cities from time to time. How long was it in Charleston, and how long do they plan to be in Greenville?

Actually it was in Chucktown for 19 years. The tourney goes back to Charleston next year but is open for bids after that. The Drive GM was on the radio Tuesday morning and indicated they did make money and would be bidding for the return in 2011.

He also said he got nothing but positive comments from fans, players and coaches. He also chastised the Greenville News for their lack of coverage. He said with a premier event he thought that G-News would have helpled them out with better coverage. Can't remember the exact numbers but it drew just under 18,000 in Greenville and last year's in Charleston drew just over 15,000. There was also one less game in Greenville, 14 instead of 15. I expect we will see it back in Greenville.

What's The Greenville News' excuse for not covering the tournament? It's not like they were covering much of anything else instead.
