Columbia's visual arts

I searched for a forum dedicated to Columbia's importance as a visual arts city and saw one on the performing arts only. What with the recent opening of 701 Whaley, the ever-improving and already impressive Columbia Museum of Art, if Art Gallery's recognition as a major player in the state's art community, and countless other galleries and developments that sometimes don't get the attention they deserve, I thought I'd start this topic. If it overlaps or duplicates another topic that I've overlooked I apologize, moderators.

I have attached an article from today's The State written by highly critical Jeffrey Day about the CMA's collection of Chinese art.

Mr. Objective himself, Jeffery Day of The State newspaper, calls the Columbia Museum of Art's upcoming exhibit an art show like South Carolina has never seen. It promises to raise the status of CMA to a new level. The show will be up during Spoleto, so that truly educated aficionados will make the trip up I-26 for this phenomenal exhibit.

The State newspaper today says the crowd at the opening of the show broke a records. The article also says the exhibit has caught the attention of people in Atlanta and Charlotte. I guess we'll be having lots of cultured, artsy visitors soon.

The children's book Where the Wild Things Are will soon be a movie, and the Richland County Public Library is the site of the first publicly displayed art in the nation that shows what characters in the movie will look like. Columbia was chosen because of the setting created by its fantastic children's library.
