I voted for the John Hancock tower in Chicago because I love the architecture and design of the building.

Not because of height, but because of the the art deco design.

I chose The Space Needle. It's my favourite of the observation towers around the world. Something in the styling, very mid-century Amercan. Close tie with the TransAmerica Pyramid out of the ones listed. But my favourite I think is PPG in Pittsburgh, perhaps not as well known as those on the list.

- technically, I wouldn't consider the Space Needle a building though.

Driving into the city, I know I'm home when I see the Transamerica Pyramid (especially at night when its peak is lit!)

ive lived in seattle for a huge period of my life, and the space needle is located there. a good thing about it is that it isnt only like a landmark, it serves amazing foods, im serious u gota eat there some time. on the new year, u shud see seattle go boom along with the needle. and for being built in the 60s, i think its an amazing accomplishment! the 60s! wow!

I voted for space needle. ESB is next, but I like the impression it makes on the city. ESB does too. Its just space needle seems more modern and future like.

It strikes me as retro-modern. A past vision of the future. It's straight out of the Jetsons. It's really the best of a late mid-century futurist style. There's a lot of crap that came out of the 60s and 70s, I think the Space Needle will stand out as the best of that era.

I voted for the Sears tower -- just b/c I am a biased Chicagoan. But I would also have voted for the Hancock... nice one -- right on the lake.

Well, my favorite famous building is split between the JHC and Sears Tower.

However they are far from my favorite overall skyscrapers.

I voted for the John Hancock...assuming it's the one in Chicago. My apartment in Chicago overlooked the Sears Tower so I grew overly sick of that enormous beast morning and night. It's all well and good until you have to look at it every day for months on end.

Empire State Building got my vote! Though, I wish the Chrysler Building had been listed -- which is my favorite of all.

hmmmm...

I am facinated by your reasoning for the list you have chosen. My favorite buildings are those that do not appear in a "Top Ten" list of sits to visit.

If anything, I find that urban fabric is often worse off for these so-called landmarks. The challenge is creating architecture that celebrates detail and knits together a route, a neighbourhood or a culture.

As a non-American, I challenge you to create a more global list of buildings to vote about.
