The skyline is pretty good. I've heard though that the rates of major (serious) crimes are very high in that city.

Yeah, I've heard the crime rate is pretty high too. Of course a lot of American cities have high crime rates, so that does not surprise me.

verry nice! add a couple of 40 story towers and a 60-story tower and Charlotte would have some serious competition. Richmond has a very large skyline for a city its size. Richmond is smaller than Greensboro and soon the be smaller than Durham yet Richmond has a skyline that is denser than Charlotte. Although Charlotte has a taller skyline. Richmond needs to go taller. More 40-story towers are needed and the city needs a signature tower that needs to reach about 60 stories.

I have a friend who has lived in the old part of Richmond for 10 years.  He said that crime was an issue as Richmond faced the same issue of many North Eastern cities of white flight during the 60s-80s.  What was left behind was not pretty.  While Richmond was the capital of the Confederate South, it has not shared in the prosperity of the modern South.

However in the last few years that trend seems to be reversing a bit as shown above in the new development above.

This is my first post....let me speak as someone from Richmond who can shed some light on these issues. Metro Richmond as a whole has shared in the prosperity of the modern south. I would say that you are probably right about Richmond city, but not about the surrouding counties. Chesterfield County, where I live, as a strong school system and a growing economy. It is the eighth most affluent county in America.

Richmond city has one of the highest murder rates in America. For several years running, we have been in the top four per capita murder rates in the US, unfortunately.

I am from Richmond. Richmond is so dense because the city was built that way. It makes providing adequate parking a real problem. Richmond is smaller than Greensboro, but you would not be able to tell the difference. Richmond is 197,000 in the city limits and 1.2 million in metro. This puts Richmond in company with Greensboro, Memphis (1.1 metro) Nashville (1.4 metro), and New Orleans (1.3 metro).

Charlotte is taller, but I think Richmond already competes with it except for the large tower in Charlotte. I think that if Richmond were to add a signature tower, I would not want to go taller than 45-50 stories, considering the tallest is about 25 currently. Richmond does need to go taller. New Orleans and Charlotte look so much bigger because they have a tall signture tower. Richmond has done well in the aesthetics department. Just look at Nashville and then Richmond and see.
