Yes, I'd have to agree with you. I like other skylines as well, such as Denver and Seattle, and most people will say New York. But New York is really a big mess with skyscrapers. Yes, there's a lot of them, but other than the Chrysler Building, and Empire State Building, there really is not one that distinctifies itself. Other than the ones mentioned, they are all mostly of the same height, and often times design.

Are there any significant suburban highrise areas in Chicago? In a way, those are bad as they detract from downtown. I want to see Chicago's skyline quadriple in size in my lifetime (hey, have to be ambitious no?). :)

I don't know about suburban highrises, but I know that the 2020 plan for the city calls for making the area directly west of the Loop all highrise apartments and condos. I'll have to find the pics of the city leaders' vision for the city ro post on here. It is quite a remarkable change that will take place!

There are many areas in the burbs that have highrises. A couple of note are Schaumburg and Rosemont.

I took the train into downtown Chicago for a day. It seemed like a great city. The parks were fantastic and the people were pleasant and nice. The Sears though, is just a monstrosity. Too bulky, too black. I'd like the skyline a lot better without it.

Oh, Chicago is certainly a sprawlopolis. Its just that it has an urban counterpart most American cities don't have. And in proportion - Chicago's suburbs are far more cohesive then what you find in, say, Atlanta. You have cul-de-sacs and winding roads within a gridded network that is packed more tightly together.

If you want dense suburbia - you should look at Toronto. ;)

That's one thing that disappoints me about the Chicago aerials. I was hoping to see more Toronto-like burbs. But its still CHITOWN! :)

Toronto suburbs have great transit, GO trains to connect the city, and very regular bus service. Every 5 mins. during peak @ Square One in Mississauga (in the first pic).

To be fair - the Schaumburg sprawl is no different from most American cities. Its more dense then Northern Atlanta from what I remember...

Yes, Schaumburg's sprawl is more dense than Northern Atlanta, no question about it. Chicago's burbs are indeed dense when compared to anything else in the US. My old boss lives in Naperville and he had about a two hour commute to work if he chose to drove (he took a commuter train) and it is only about 35 miles from downtown I believe. I worked with several people who lived very close to the Wisconsin border and near Gary, Indiana that took the commuter trains in.

Here is a Metra Rail map for Chicago:

There are areas of greater density than what I showed you pictures of, but I couldn't find aerials of the areas or even any good ground shots. One of note is Rosemont which is next to O'hare and has a stop on the Blue Line (subway, but runs at grade through this area). Chicago is much better sprawl than say what Charlotte has just because of it's grid system. If you fly over Chicago you would see huge squares laid out and developers take note of that and section the squares off in smaller squares so that it keeps the grid active unlike Charlotte where the whole city looks like a few pounds of spaghetti that got dumped on the kitchen floor after it was cooked.

You know somthing, I do enjoy posting with the members on this site, everybdy is really cool... :) But some of you are just plain haters. ;) Don't hate on N Y just because(although I and from the otherside of the hudson...NJ) we are much more developed than Chicago is. B) We know our stuff when it comes to skycrapers. We are simply the best and you guys know it. :P NYC has a nice amout of different skycrapers too. They aren't all boxes...come on people. ;) NY is better.....

BTW, not all of Toronto's suburbs are quite THAT dense, but the innermost part is. There are a lot of comparisons to be made between Chicago and Toronto, only Toronto has far more suburban highrises and suburban town centers with significant highrise development.

Chicago has the ultimate downtown, and a far taller downtown though.
