Roundabouts in Charlotte

Last time I was in town, I was pleased to see that there are at least a couple ofroundabouts in Charlotte. Will more be constructed in the future? They are so conducive to an even flow of traffic that they are magnificant. In England some of the roundabouts have beautiful gardens and landscaping in the center part. They had a large one down here in Florida a couple of years ago in Clearwater. It was so confusing and resulted in so many wrecks that it had to be removed.

There's a few around. There's another off of Wilkinson on Mulberry Church Rd (near Billy Graham Pkwy).

Its my understanding that CDOT will consider them if there is context for it. Don't expect to see large traffic circles though, like you do in the UK. I dont think there will be a proliferation of them in Charlotte. They are ok for traffic flow in low traffic volume situations, but in a real urban setting they are useless because there are another auto-centric design feature that doesn't acknowledge the other modes of tranpsportation that are also using the road.

There are a few I can think of. In the Palisades development near Lake Wylie there is one. There is also one right near there in the Target shopping center on Hwy. 49 and Hwy. 160. The largest one I have seen in terms of size is in Rock Hill between Celanese and Cherry Rd...I forget the name of the roads that intersect there, maybe krazeeboi can help me, but it has a large apartment complex as one of the street turn-offs.

Well, while not a "public" road, the roundabout on UNCC's campus next to the Fretwell building is very heavily used and is extremely effective at moving traffic and pedestrians. There is also one on the CRI campus and another in University leading to Phase II of the Promenade Shopping Center.

In February Davidson opened a pair of roundabouts just off Exit 30 along Griffith Street. They were put in place with the intention of more effiencently and quickly getting traffic off I-77 and preventing the ramp from backing up onto the freeway. The area is booming with development as well ... three five story offices, a 5 story Homewood Suites, a 6 story Sheraton, the 7 story Pinnacle condo, various other housing projects, a Harris Teeter shopping center, etc.

There is also one in Elizabeth at 8th and Lamar...it's more of a traffic dot than a circle....I can only assume the sad little tree in the middle has been leveled quite a few time by drivers.

Speaking of which, there is a large traffic circle on Brawley School Rd, at The Point subdivision in Iredell County. A couple of years ago, a drunk driver (a resident of The Point, I believe) was seeing how fast they could drive down that relatively straight, wide section of Brawley School. They forgot about the traffic circle striking the center island head one, sending the car into the air and directly through the historic farmhouse in the middle of the circle. It was a true "only happens in the movies" event.

I live only a house away from the Park&Tremont roundabout. It's not that old and overall it's been successful but I am still cut off about once a week by people that don't seem to understand what the Yield sign means :o Growing up on Hilton Head Island I learned early on how to navigate clogged Sea Pines and Coligny Circles and there are several more on the island. Charlotte should build as many as feasibly possible.

There is a new roundabout that opened a few months ago as a gateway into downtown Concord. While it is technically not in Charlotte it is a fairly major roundabout into the active downtown area of Concord and it has worked extremely well all of the times I've been through there. It is located on Cabarrus Avenue on the south side of downtown.
