Miami football has signed a 25-year lease with Dolphin Stadium to play there, starting with the 2008 season. This was done despite attempts by city officials to keep the team with offers of $206 million in upgrades. More information is available at Charlotte.com.

They thought their attendance was bad at the Orange Bowl. The Dolphins Stadium will be like a morgue. This will be the beginning of the end for Miami football.

I agree with the comments that this will kill the attendance at UM games. The support has only been an inch deep anyway and this will take a lot of the student body and Miami residents out of the mix. I think that the Orange Bowl will be sold to developers and be torn down within a couple of years.

yeah, the Orange Bowl is in the middle of the hood (so to speak). for the sake of the fans, it should located on campus as with most university schools. moving to Dolphin Stadium would kill the tepid attendance even more (not that the Hurricanes are a hot ticket to begin with except in big games). Look for a lot of empty seats when they play teams like Duke or any other school that are deemed not high profiled

The article says they hope to generate $2 million or more in extra revenue annually for the Hurricanes' athletic department so apparently they think otherwise. I hope they're right because the contract is for 25 years.

How far is it from the Miami campus to Dolphin Stadium?

Even if the Orange Bowl is crappy and run-down, I hate to see a classic, traditional venue like that get pushed aside in pursuit of luxury boxes.

Not sure but that was the game after the FIU fight where 13 players from Miami were suspended so add that to a usually crappy showing by Duke and I could understand a low attendance.

I'm not a Miami fan, but I hate to see such "detachment" of an athletics department from the university itself. A stadium/arena/etc. should be as close to the campus as possible.
