840 Construction Set to Resume Soon

According to the Tennessean, Hwy 840 construction should be able to resume soon. The road originally expected to be completed by 1998, can be completed by 2011 at the earliest. There is an 11 mile stretch in Williamson county that's being held up. Those trying to hold up construction vow to keep on fighting. I have mixed feeling about this. I think it was probably a mistake to build this highway in the first place, but now that it's so close to being complete, I think it's high time to finish it. There's no doubt this road has and will continue to be a major contributor to sprawl in the Nashville Metro area. Your thoughts?

will it contribute to sprawl? yes, probably. i think it will be a good transportation route also though. while 96 does connect 24 to 40, it's not exactly the quickest way in the world if you live in murfreesboro. sprawl in the southern part of middle tennessee is inevitable. this project will at least alleviate some of the traffic problems on existing roadways in the future.

If this is a proposal to simply finish the southern portion of it then I say just go ahead and finish the damn thing. But if this is a proposal to resurrect the insanity of the northern arch that would carve a giant path through some of the most treasured and beautiful natural lands this state has, at a cost of hunderds of millions of dollars so the megalopoli of Dickson and Springfield can be connected by expressway, then I have to stand against it.

I believe they should go ahead and finish what they started. It's only a waste of time to keep protesting this. Could you imgagine Middle Tennesee in ten years, sprawl, headquarters and all without 840. The traffic you think is bad now would be much worse. Every road or super highway built will change the environment and this is no different. I enjoy the drive through the rolling hills making my journey from Murfreesboro to Franklin to spend money I could be spending here (ok I'll be patient, hurry up Whole Foods!), but this road does cut down on the number of semis and other unnecessary traffic.
