FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - A Seattle company plans to build a $200 million plant near Fayetteville to turn corn into ethanol, joining an industry that's booming thanks to government subsidies and political desires to reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil.

This is good news for jobs in that particular area, however I hope this isn't a fad that will end up with those folks out of work and a $200 million dollar white elephant of a plant.

Very true. A concern about the emerging ethanol industry is that it might be overextending itself.

Well, if all MTBE in gasoline was replaced with ethanol demand would increase something like 2000% and if the Bayh-Brownback Fuel and Vehicle Choice for the 21st Century Act is passed by Congress this session (which is more likely to happen with the Dems in charge) than the demand will go up 500%.

It seems as if the rural Fayetteville surrounding area is booming with over 500 new jobs within 4 counties (Hoke, Duplin, Robeson, & Sampson). Maybe this can create some type of Ethanol HQ for Fayetteville since the Metro will be surrounded with the stuff.
