Luring JetBlue, Luftansa and Virgin with an airport casino?

General article about a few different ideas to liven up the region (especially downtown) though the halfpipe down 5 blocks of Forbes Avenue is a bit out there.

One idea that did catch my eye was the Airport casino, given the opposition by Duquesne Univ. and other "neighbors" to some of the casino sites the Airport offers the only perfect solution to it (anyone who lives that close to PIT already is use to lots of noise and commotion), as well as giving us as much of a tax kick as a downtown area site, but with the added bonus of making PIT once again a "hub" airport, whales flying in from all over making their 3 hour layovers at PIT! This would certainly force the industry to respond by choosing Pittsburgh over the Clevelands and the (current JetBlue stomping ground) Rochester/Syracuse, Phillys and even DCs as the destination to change flights at, we could keep the rest of the airport family friendly and get around the security snafus (being that the Casino would be connected to the airside everyone coming in or out would be held to the same security ritual as passengers flying out) by boasting it is the "world's safest casino!

The more I think about this (although it would be very very strange) the more I like this idea. What would be better to instantly make all that tax payer subsidized land (county owned) waiting for development in great demand?

I saw this article this morning and it really annoyed me. I thought it was going to be a serious article with worthy ideas. Instead it was mostly silly and the most worthy idea (consolidation) should not have been listed since it is already out there so to speak. As for the gambling at the airport. Fine, they have it Vegas as well. Sure, go ahead, but given that we are trying to get a casino built... how about let's start with that for now. Besides, gambling at the airport is not a wow and if we are betting (no pun intended) on our wow to be at the airport, then we are not really getting what a wow should be.

I thought all city public schools already required foreign languages. I know the ones I attended did.

I thought so too. I didn't attend Pgh public schools, by the way. I went to Pitt's Falk School where they taught foreign languages starting at Grade 6.

I wouldn't be surprised if foreign langauges was made part of the optional curriculum. Personally, while I think its great for people to learn foreign languages, I question the actual need. Most of the world speaks some form of English. Plus, some of the more important langauges to learn today (Japanese and Chinese) are rarely taught. Instead, langauges like French and Latin are taught. French I can see of some use (if you were to open a business in Paris) but Latin? Spanish might be somewhat important if you were living in an area with a high immigrant Hispanic population, but Pgh is not such an area.

I'm not saying these shouldn't be taught. However, I can see why (if this were the case), the requirement of learning a foreign language was cut.

I attended Frick Middle School and Schenley High School, both of which taught Japanese among other languages. Not sure if they still do, but as recently as 4 years ago (when my sister graduated) Schenley taught foreign languages and required at least a year of it for most (if not all) students.

I hope that all city schools still do require it, but who knows. Perhaps that article was uninformed, or was refering to all schools in the area?

The article was talking about elementary schools (that would be very special to have kids learning English and Italian/Spanish/Chinese/German etc. side by side in 1st and 2nd grade!), I don't know of any school in the region that does that yet. I do believe there are some districts around the country that have that as mandatory though. Could you imagine all area 5 year olds being fluent in 3 languages!

We could re-open the airport casino to gate traffic again, non-stop to Frankfurt and Singapore! :)
