That first New Orleans picture is fantastic. I really like that second to last one too.

I am going to have to make it to add Monroe to the places to see in Louisiana, which until this stood at Lake Charles and Shreveport. Monroe is awesome looking.

Anybody have any Lafayette pics, when I went through there it appeared like it might have a nice little downtown skyline. I need to go back there too.

I think its now my goal to see and explore all of Louisiana at some point. It is such a cool state. My first trip down there was awesome, and was way better than all my expectations.

Is that the original Lake Charles downtown area, or is that a commercial area that grew up next to the old downtown? If that is the original downtown I assume alot of urban renewal took out alot of old structures.

Glad you liked the pictures, Rural King.

Monroe is an interesting city, IMO. The buildings have that "old-original" styling that I really like. That is also the same for Alexandria,LA. But I couldnt get any pics of Alexandria's skyline.

Lake Charles has their "new" downtown area, and they still have most of the original downtown left. The tall building in the Lake Charles pic is the tallest building between Baton Rouge and Houston. It, along with many of the other buildings in the new downtown area didnt go up until the casino's started popping up throughout Lake Charles in the 80's. Lots of people from East Texas and the Houston area go to Lake Charles to gamble, so a big chunk of the money in the L.C. enonomy comes from the Texans, the rest is oil and chemical production.

Here's a great recent photograph of Shreveport's skyline from Bossier City. In September 2006 the new 12-story Convention Center Hilton Hotel will be a nice addition to downtown's north side. Also, not shown is 25-story Horseshoe Casino Hotel on Bossier City's side of the Red River.

Nice pics ! I can't wait to see Baton Rouge's SKYLINE in two years !

I have been sketching on paper what BR's skyline would look-like with all the new-addtions. WOW! BR's is gonna have a real skyline !!!

New Orleans has a dense urban core ! # 1 in Lousiana skyline w/o a close 2nd place runner-up.

Yep, both New Orleans and Baton Rouge are going to have some great changes to their skylines in the next few years.

And I'm with you, I can't wait to see what Baton Rouge will look like once some of these new towers are completed, and IMO we've just seen the tip of the iceberg in terms of towers in downtown Baton Rouge, I wouldn't be suprised if there are many more 30+ storey towers, and towers even higher than than if the height moratorium is changed. :D

Great news NCB ! Why do you think BR should see many more 30+ high-rise towers ? I hope you are right ! I would love to see it !! The recently proposed 19-story Laurel Tower/Regions Ctr. is really the first development that has been conceived post-Katrina. Bec. the project is trying to get Fed. transit $funds. The mixed-use project will also feature a public transportation center for the Capital Area Transit System.

The LSU area is about to build three more mid-rise condo projects !

* 10-story addition to the Southgate Towers(Burbank/Nicholson)

* 6-story Sterling Northgate (Highland Rd)

* 5-story Crescent;phase I & 5-storyCourtyard;phase II at University Lake(Stanford Ave.)

Huge -project !!!

*First Worthington of Dallas will build an additional 350 units ! At the northgates. I look for more in the future just South of downtown on the other side of the Bridge on Nicholson too !

Someone said "Skylines are powerful symbols of culture & community."

"They're a literal bar chart. You can see them from a distance, you know that it s something dynamic and growing " !

Great! I'm going to add those projects to the "Baton Rouge Growth and Development Thread."

I think Baton Rouge could see more 20 or 30+ storey towers simply because there is going to be alot more business going on downtown. I think that over the next decade Baton Rouge will develop into a much more business-important city to both the state and the south in some ways. Most of the development that has been going on in the city the last few years have been 10 storey government buildings, and nothing major related to business or downtown living, which will most likely become popular as well. I think there will be some bigger companies setting up offices of any kind in Baton Rouge, and considering how little office space there is left in downtown right now, the only way to go is up. :D

And if you think about it this way, we're only three weeks into 2006, and three business/residential related projects have been proposed or have started construction downtown. Who knows what could be planned for the city at this time in 2007!

I am very impressed with Shreveport's skyline. Its definately a city you hear alot about, but don't see many pictures of.

Yeah Shreveport has a nice skyline for a city of its size. It's really a great city and area, with many great things to check out if your a tourist. :D

The buildings have that "old-original" styling that I really like.

That's because the buildings themselves are very old...from the 30s, I believe. There are a few other "tall" buildings in Monroe that were built in the 80s. One is known as Premier Plaza, while the other is Chase Mortgage. Both are 10 or so floors.

Baton Rouge has so much going for it business-wise, but I think that one set-back the city is going to have to confront in the coming years is its lack of a major airport. For a major metro that is now well on its way towards a population of one million, and a larger airport worthy of Baton Rouge's size will be a must. I drove by the Baton Rouge airport last week and unless serious additions are made I can't see it sustaining Baton Rouge for much longer

Interesting point ! Baton Rouge airport is under-sized.Sounds like the same problem Austin had a few years back, til the old AFB became thier airport. Austin is coming out of San Antonio's shadows. That seems to Baton Rouge's problem being under New Orleans shadow. The Hurricane accelerated everything. There was talk of run-way expansion in the mid-90's ?? Plank Road to the east-side was to have a small-tunnel to go under the main runway. Have not heard anything about it recently.

I know more parking garages are planned .

^There has been talk recently of constructing a whole new airport, perhaps around Hammond, that would serve both Baton Rouge and New Orleans, and would be much bigger than the current Armstong Int'l in New Orleans. It would be similar to the Dallas/Ft. Worth Airport, though smaller. This is definately something to watch, as talk of a possible major airport to serve both metro's is being looked into currently.

As far as SKYLINES in Louisiana are concerned,New Orleans is the premier , "top-dog". It is home to six of the State's Tallest Bldgs ! And if built ,the Trump Int'l Hotel at 60-stories/700 'ft, would edge One Shell Square at 697' ft.

For now,the State Capitol at 460'ft. is Louisiana's 7th tallest bldg. While Downtown BR's bldgs.(4@20+stories) may be a little taller than Shreveport's(3@20+)(AmSouth 364' ft), BR's Skyline is too spread-out;Shreveport has a more dense urban-core,not including casino-hotels(9 other bldgs. 14-17-stories),so Shreveport's look's more impressive ! But BR has three major projects,30+,19 & 19-stories to fill-in those gaps Downtown, to give it a legit Skyline in a couple years. BR has many more high-rises outside the CBD; *The Marriott Hotel-22 stories is 4 miles away;and has 7 other bldgs.scattered of at least 12 + stories. Those also, could have filled in some gaps in BR's lacking Skyline.

Metairie actually has a nice little Skyline;including the 34-story/403'ft Three Lakeway Ctr. taller than anything in Shreveport.

In Southwest LA; eventhough Lafayette has a pop. of 112,000 ; it has nothing that compares to the 22-story Hibernia Bank Tower at 300'ft,and 26-story L'Auberge Hotel in the smaller 75,000 Lake Charles.

Lafayette.jpg

One view of Lafayette's skyline. You can't see the courthouses or the Iberia Bank building, but that's a view of Jefferson St., the Chase Bank building and Jefferson Towers with the mural. It's out of date as I can see a few buildings which have been remodeled since that picture was taken (probably five to seven years ago).

No new skyscrapers, but supposedly they are building a new hotel or two downtown which will be several stories.

^Great picture, breaux! It's nearly impossible to find any good Lafayette skyline pics on the internet, and I havent been able to get over there with my camera yet, so it's nice to see a Lafayette shot on the forum.

As of right now, the Trump Tower could very well be 70 stories and closer to 800 feet. :D I think New Orleans will continue to have the leading skyline in Louisiana with all of high-rise projects proposed and upcoming in the city, but Baton Rouge will move past Shreveport into the #2 spot after it fills in those gaps and add's some more height to its skyline. :D

Just to add as a reference, this is the tower that richyb was talking about in Metairie.

Three Lakeway Center, the tallest building in metro New Orleans, and the tallest building in Louisiana outside of downtown New Orleans or downtown Baton Rouge.
