Durham CHIPS Manufacturing USA Institute HQ

On Tuesday, the Biden-Harris Administration announced that the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Semiconductor Research Corporation Manufacturing Consortium Corporation (SRC) are entering negotiations for the department to provide SRC $285 million to establish and operate a Manufacturing USA institute headquartered in Durham.

With combined funding totaling $1 billion, this investment will support the launch of the first-of-its-kind CHIPS Manufacturing USA Institute, known as SMART USA.

This is good news for the entire state, and hopefully, other chipmakers will be located in our state. We already have a few, the new Wolfspeed plant in Siler City and some smaller ones in Greensboro.

This is such a big deal for Durham/RTP. Should lead to larger percentage of non-biotech investment in the  region of which the Triangle can't get out of the way of lately. With all of the recent pharma announcements and new int'l air service adds, the long-term for the region is really hard to imagine. It seems kind of limitless right now. Transit is really the only hole I see in the short-term but, I feel that will come to the forefront soon... I hope.
