Plans for a 40-home subdivision surrounding the historic Hollycrest estate off Linden Road cleared Pinehurst’s Village Council in the developer’s first presentation on Tuesday.

Ken Bass of Bass Design and Development applied to have the project approved on behalf of landowner HEK Management. Plans lay out four new streets from Hollycrest Drive in addition to Keswick Drive, which was installed in the late 1980s and leads to three homes that were built around the same time.

Residents from two of those homes, as well as two residents on the edge of the Lake Pinehurst area whose yards border the currently wooded area, spoke during Tuesday’s public hearing on the preliminary plat with concerns about added traffic, stormwater management and whether the new homes will complement or detract from the historic home at the center of the proposed development.

A Sandhills business is looking to make a big move within Moore County.

Tough Stump Technologies, based in Southern Pines, primarily works with unmanned systems, specifically mapping drones and situational awareness software. The company purchased 75 acres in Moore County for $1.28 million, according to a deed filed Friday. The land sits along Vass-Carthage Road in between Vass and Carthage.

The Morganton Road corridor will get another upscale apartment development under plans the Southern Pines Town Council approved Tuesday.

This latest development will be near the already-approved mixed-use development that includes a large retail center expected to be anchored by a Target store. The apartment complex at hand would include 269 units and typical amenities of a luxury apartment such as a clubhouse and pool.

Located on just over 13 acres, the apartments would tie into the proposed Target shopping center on one side and the Morganton soccer fields on the other side.

The developer is Wilmington-based Zimmer Development Co., which is also responsible for the Eagle Landing Apartments nearby on U.S. 15-501. It is to be built on parcels owned by Midland Atlantic Properties of Cincinnati. Midland Atlantic owns all of the parcels in development, known as Morganton Park South.
