  1. Nordstrom, Saks, Lord & Taylor, Parisian? LOL, definately wishful thinking on my part.

I'd be nice if we got a Macy's at Westgate. Then I could stop driving to Greenville.

  2. I would think they are looking to locate on Summit Pointe as this makes the most sense in every way imagineable. And money is no issue for them, I assure you.

I've heard that Hooters was building in the Best Buy/Lowes Shopping Center.

  3. If Ruby Tuesday wasn't outside the mall already, that would have been a great location. Haywood Mall seems to be having some success with their Ruby Tuesday.

Whatever they replace it with, I hope it's a national chain or at least a recongnizable regional chain.

  4. I heard a full scale Burger King will replace the closing Sam Goody's in the food court.

Not hoping for another fast food burger place in the mall, I admit it would be an upgrade from the McDonald's Express. I would prefer Garfield's came instead.

Garfield's in a mall? What do you think this is Westgate? ;)

  5. How does Dutch Square survive? It seems like a second-tier mall that has some mid-priced (or lower) stores in it- maybe 1/2 the size and not as nice as McAlister Square, which got killed by Haywood Mall. Why hasn't Columbiana killed Dutch Square?

Dutch Square probably won't be going anywhere. It's a great central location with good stores. Unlike Richland Mall, which is surrounded by rich old money, Dutch Square is surrounded by apartment complexes and homes of mostly middle class. These people are I bet, at least 60-70% of mall shoppers.

  6. At least you in Columbia still have a Parisian- Greenville did not even support that; people were so set in their ways and continued to shop at ratty Haywood Mall rather than going to Greenville Mall and its higher-end stores that G'ville Mall went under.

Haywood before its massive renovation reminds me a lot of what Columbia Place was in the late 90's. It was a mall for the middle class. Not too expensive, not too cheap.

Now that Haywood has the chance to move a little more upscale, they're taking advantage of it. I say good for them. I shop there often because I like Macy's :P

Columbiana luckily doesn't have anything to worry about. Opposite end of town and no competition from Columbia Place or Dutch Square. No need to mention Richland :)

Yeah because people here want to wear Belts, Shorts, Shirts, and underwear with the Palmetto Flag on them, and Rainbow sandals year round.....God Forbid they wear a Kenneth Cole Peacoat , Guess Black pants, and a Burberry scarf, they much rather freeze to death in their SC gear

Sad, but so true. Here at USC Upstate, I see people wear sandles and shorts in the winter.

  7. true, Dick's is hardly an upscale mall store.

What would you say about Bass Pro Shops ?

Dick's isn't upscale, but it's not exactly low end. You can put a Dick's Sporting Goods just about anywhere with a good population and it'll do fairly well. Our DSG in Spartanburg does fairly well.

  8. So what, it's still going to have the same boring run of the mill unpopular brands that any other JCPenney carries, and IMO it just doesn't belong in our premier mall, actually I dont think it belongs in any premier mall in most cities.......for example you dont find JCP in SouthPark in Charlotte, nor Lenox Square in Atlanta, nor do you find it in Copley Place(Boston), or Mall of America(MPLS), or Mall at Green Hills(Nashville), Galleria Houston(houston), etc....

Honestly, there's nothing premier about Columbiana Centre. Sure it's the nicest mall in town, but it's not a premier mall. They don't even have a Coach store :P We have 1 soon to be 2 in the Upstate. Columbiana has a long way to go before they decide to completely move upscale.

Anyway, if I were the leasing manager at Columbiana Centre, I would have gotten Macy's or a Nordstrom instead of JCP.

  9. LOL, it certainly is within walking distance of the residents of Saxon though.

I'm not a big fan of the Saxon Project. It's only a matter of time before it turns into what it once was 7 years ago. A crime invested, urban disaster.

If they do with Saxon what they did with Jaggers on Barmhamville Road, then they'll have a success story on their hands.

  10. One thing that escapes me is that if Columbiana and Village is supposed to be so "Upscale" compared to Columbia Place, then why are they missing some of the key upscale stores? Hell we even have a Coach Store in the Upstate at Prime Outlets!

I always thought a Coach store would make a great addition to Columbiana Centre, even with the anchors selling coach apparel.

  11. I used to be somewhat into Ecko, but I prefer Akademics and Phat Farm these days. I liked RP55 when the label was hot; they just sorta fell off for no apparent reason.

    ***Officially OT, For now***

I wear some Ecko and RocaWear, but there's nothing like my Shuttle Girbaud Jeans.

    ***Back to topic at hand***

Columbia Place should really take up the urban mall image. Urban fads and fashion will always be around. When the market changes, you change with it, and consumer will continue to shop with you. This is a problem that some anchor stores have. It's been the same crap for 20 years seems like.

It was already bad enough that the mall looked like it was stuck in the 70's for all those years. It finally got that much needed make over, and now all it needs it to identify itself. Those cheesy commericals they had a few years ago. Sing with me if you remember the jingle: "It's a great shopping place!" doesn't fit the demographic, especially in that area.

  12. :P Now that I think about it, they really don't need another anchor store at Columbia Place, because there are already too many anchor stores in Columbia. With roughly 120k people in the city limits, there's no need for so many anchors, especially when hardly any are at capacity for shopping.

    Belk's at Dutch Square

    Belk's at Columbiana

Belk coming soon to the Village

    Dillards at Columbia Place

    Dillard's at Columbiana

    Sears at Columbia Place

    Sears at Columbiana

    JCP at the Village

    Macy's at Columbia Place

    Parisian at Richland Mall

This is waaaaaaaaaaaaay too many anchor stores for a metro our size. I'm not sure what they should do with the JCP space, but if it's another anchor, it shouldn't be one already listed above. If I had a couple of million to play around with, i'd invest in an urban anchor store that would feature enough urban brands to pull all the 15-28 crowd right on in. Girbaud, Roca Wear, Ecko, etc. It could work :P

    or...

Let's close Phoenix again, and turn JCP into an Imax. Now that's a great idea :D All BS aside, I think tha would really do big things for Columbia Place. Columbia doesn't have an Imax yet, so why not beat Sandhill to the punch?

  13. And having Columbia Place listed on deadmalls.com probably doesn't help; professionals in commercial real estate do read that site (and might think twice about investing in a property after laughing their heads off about it).

I read the info they have on deadmalls.com, but I don't see that mall dying anytime soon, at least for another 10 years.

If that entire area builds up its retail sector again, it surely won't have a problem surviving. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before Best Buy pulls the trigger and moves up Two Notch, and the old CC/Value City/OMax shopping center has already gone by the wayside anyway.

If they change their image to strictly an "urban" mall, i'm sure they won't have a problem surviving, for now. Leave the upscale shopping experiences to Sandhill and Columbiana Centre.

    or...

If they were to bring in an entirely new anchor store to Columbia Place, that isn't already in Columbia, I think that would bring some new flavor to the old JCP spot.

I hope the mall doesn't just go down the drain. It's the only 2 level mall in the city with a great location with tons of traffic.

  14. There already IS a mall downtown, the Arcade Mall next to the Barringer Building. If and when I win the lottery I will renovate it and turn it into a showplace. ;)

When I was an intern for a company downtown, I walked by that building many lunch hours. If parking wasn't such a big issue downtown, that would be a great place for downtown retail development.

I was in Cleveland, OH on vacation last year and me and my fiance did some shopping at Tower City. Great shopping, downtown location, and it was pretty nice overall.

  15. Um where have u been? lol....Rich's was bought out by Macy's over a year ago, and Hecht's is becoming extinct too because Macy's is buying them out also.....

I haven't been to Columbia Place in about 2 years, and I visit Columbia 7-10 times a year on average. I wasn't aware that Rich's was bought by Macy's :P

I didn't know that about Hecht's either. I think i'm gonna go to Columbia Place this weekend and see how things are shaping up.

  16. How about a Nordstrom :) Talk about wishful thinking...

I can't think of any retailers that'll occupy the JCP space right now. From visiting Carolina Place in Charlotte, I think Hect's would be a good fit for the space, but I don't see that happening.

I can't think of any department store chain that would be willing to occupy the JCP space right now. With Rich's, Sears, and Dillard, there's not much of a market for anything else.

Boscov's looks like a good fit, but it reminds me of Sears.
