  1. Another bridge proposal is mentioned here, although this one by Hank Cobb is unlikely to be considered.

    "From the I-65 merge with I-10 travel straight-line easterly to the Broad Street overpass and (on the straight ahead rising approach ramp) go up and over the McDuffie Coal Terminal, cross the bridge over the tip edge of the mouth of Mobile River, come down over Pinto Island south of the Battleship Alabama and merge into the new Bayway in the center of the Bay."

    This bridge would have river clearance of 360 feet, far higher than the ALDOT proposal, and would not have an adverse affect on the maritime industry or downtown developments. It would cost $800 million-$1 billion, more than the ALDOT proposal.

    Maybe the powers that be should take a look at this...

    I am surprised that no one has given a more southern route any consideration. A southern bridge would also give the chance to build a truly magnificent bridge that would serve as an icon for the city of Mobile. I think the cost is the largest factor here, but if the bridge is tolled, then a portion of the cost would be covered.

  2. Well ultimately I think the whole system can and should be tolled. Those of us who use it pay for it, those of us who stay in Midtown and off the highways dont. Thats about as fair as it gets.

    I am tired of subsidizing sprawl.

    I agree; most of the people using the bridge would be out-of-towners and those who have contributed to the sprawl. Most large spans such as this one are tolled, and there will be a free alternative in the Wallace and Bankhead Tunnels if one would rather not pay the toll.

    All those changes would cost a LOT more than $462 million. I guess I fail to see the big problem with the current locations for the proposed bridge. It looks to be a large suspension type bridge that will have only a few bridge pylons in the ship yard areas. I personally think they are just whining. I'm sure there will be some loss of money and inconvenience, but a couple of bridge pylons isn't going to cause a 50% ($250M) decrease in shipyard revenues.

    If the bridge is to be a suspension bridge, then there has to be room on each end of the bridge for the large anchorages that hold the deck-supporting cables at maximum tension. Didn't the plans call for a cable-stayed bridge instead of a suspension bridge? A cable-stayed bridge would not require any anchorages.

    Still, to avoid putting any of the pylons in the middle of the Mobile River one would have to be placed on either side of it. The approaches to the bridge would also cause some of the shoreline to be cut off from the rest of the city.

    I would love to see exactly what kind of footprint the current proposed bridge would have.

  3. I would rather see Legion Field and the area round it renovated and revitalized rather then building a dome stadium. There is too much history at Legion Field for it to be neglected.

    I will say this: football fans (and NFL owners) would rather see football played in an open-air stadium than a domed stadium, especially in the south. Whether or not Legion Field could be renovated and the area around the stadium revitalized is another quandary aside from the BJCC expansion.

  4. I agree; expand the BJCC arena so that perhaps one day Birmingham could land an NBA franchise (which I think Birmingham could support). I would also do what is being proposed with the dome expansion plan and create an entertainment district near the BJCC so that restaurants, bars, and other amenities are nearby to the BJCC complex. Also, I would also add additional hotel space near the BJCC.

    I am beginning to believe more and more that Birmingham just doesn't need a dome, much less the cost to build and maintain such a facility.

  5. This is another article about the projected BRAC growth in North Alabama/ Southern Middle Tennessee. Local congressman Bud Cramer says that much of the growth will be outside of Madison County. I agree with him- I can see a good percentage of the coming residents moving to Jackson, Marshall (near Lake Guntersville and in Arab), and Lincoln Counties. Cramer did mention the Shoals getting a lot of growth, but I highly doubt that, mainly because it is 70 miles away. Huntsville Times article: Region to share in BRAC gains

    There are a few people that commute from the Shoals, and I don't see how they manage it.

    I think there will be growth in Madison County, but I do agree that it will spill over into adjacent counties.

I think this development is hilarious...Calvary Assembly, a mega-church in Decatur, broke ground Sunday on a 182-acre mixed use development, with houses, condos, a retirement community, and retail space. And of course, a very large church. What makes this development even better, it's going up along a already busy highway that connects Huntsville and Decatur, infamous for the hundreds of accidents that occur along the stretch of road every year. But wait, there's more- ALDOT is doing studies and construction just for this church. Well, I'm glad they have their priorities straight. ;)

    Not to mention the fact that stretch of road is supposed to someday be a part of a westward I-565 extension...

  7. Hello all, I am new to the Huntsville area. I just bought a home in the Madison area, probably not the best time to buy a home considering that it is a sellers market in Huntsville right now with all the RSA Jobs opening up. I am moving here from Lawrenceburg, Tn. The only time that you guys would has heard from me; unless you guys go to the Nashville forum, was in a different post about Huntsville were I mentioned that I wished Huntsville could get more Interstates standard roads, but codyg1985 shot me down on that one. But I just wanted to say hey and I hope the Huntsville area will continue to grow.

    Hey, its good to think about the future in the Huntsville area. :)

  8. -Alabama State Highway 160 at Interstate 65 (Northern Metro) will be widened from 2-lanes to 5-lanes in the near future. This was already scheduled to happen, but deadly accidents on the road have encouraged Gov. Riley to speed up the process. Look for that to spur even more commercial and residential growth in one of the fastest-growing areas of the metro.

    How far will be widened? From the interstate to Hayden?

    Someone please tell me that this article is incorrect. I can't possibly see the Tutwiler becoming a Hapmpton Inn....I just can't. Article from the Sun Herald

    Is this some kind of sick joke?

    The article is correct...it is being converted to a Hampton Inn, but it has been said that the historic decor of the hotel will remain intact.

  10. I'm all for pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods, but there are more pressing transportation issues, like 53, Winchester Road, and the Southern Bypass. That $1M could have gone a long way in any of these projects.

    Much of that is due to the city of Huntsville paying for a large portion of the project. Hwy 53 and the Southern Bypass are state routes and thus won't get as much help from the city of Huntsville, or Madison County.
